Box NARB Tel: EXT dept-sociology@uonbi.ac.ke The longest study of the nternet and mobiles phones in the world still underway at the University of Nairobi, Sociology Department. This sociological project seeks to understand the ways in which the introduction of the nformation and Communication Technologies (CTs) such as nternet and Mobile Phones changes interpersonal relationships in the process of knowledge production. The project was started in 1992 with funding from Dutch government. n the consequent years, it has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), USA, through the Department of Sociology, Louisiana State University (LSU), USA. The project covers three countries viz. Kenya, Ghana and ndia. Prof. Wesley Shrum, the outgoing Chair, Department of Sociology, LSU, is the Principal Coordinator. Prof. Paul N. Mbatia, Department of Sociology & Social Work, University of Nairobi, is the national coordinator of the project in Kenya.

3 Since 2000, the project has conducted a number of longitudinal survey research focusing, inter alia, on connectivity to the internet among Kenyan researchers/scientists and adoption and use of mobile phones among Kenyans. n June 2012, the team officially launched a Movie (documentary) entitled Brother Time at the Nairobi Safari Club, widely used for peacebuilding in the 2013 election. You can see the entire movie at The movie focuses on the 2007 Post Election Violence in Kenya. During the launch, the University of Nairobi community was well presented. ndeed, Prof. Peter Mbithi (DVC A & F), Prof. Enos Njeru (Principal, CHSS) and Prof. Chitere (Dean, Faculty of Arts) graced the launch. The purpose of the study is to determine changes over time in communication practices and social networks that emerge with the introduction of electronic communication technologies (such as mobile phones). The study is covering selected technical universities and institutes in Nairobi. ut of the research project, the team has co-authored many academic papers within the field of Sociology of Science and Technology. A STUDENT FRM RSKLDE UNVERSTY, DENMARK CNDUCTS A STUDY N BUNGE LA WANANCH Ms. Simone biyen lagoke Haggensen from Roskilde University in Demark is in Kenya collecting data on the Political Space of Social Movements in Kenya: The case of Bunge la Wanainchi. She is doing her Masters Degree. She basically wanting to find out the viability of such movement; Whether Social Movements in Kenya have any future and if they do how long it will take to make an impact.
