3 What are learning outcomes? A programme learning outcome is a statement of what the learner is expected to know, understand or be able to do on successful completion of the entire programme A module learning outcome is a statement of what the learner is expected to be able to do on successful completion of the module in order to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding, skills and/ or competences

4 Why use learning outcomes? Guide students in their learning by explaining what is expected of them Help lecturers focus on what they want students to achieve in terms of knowledge, skills and competences. Help lecturers in choosing appropriate learning, teaching and assessment strategies Help lecturers and students monitor progress Provide potential students with a useful guide about the programme

5 Programme Learning Outcomes Statement of what a learner is expected to know, understand or be able to do on completion of the entire programme Programme learning outcomes can be indicated by use of such phrases as know, understand and be able to or equivalent phrases as have knowledge of or have an understanding of

7 Writing Learning Outcomes. Example BA Design ( Visual Communication) Within the context of the above aims, and upon completion of the programme Learners will demonstrate a knowledge of : The theory, concepts and methods related to the design process The historical, social, environmental and cultural context in which they will function as designers The professional, legal and ethical responsibilities of the designer The relationship between design practice and theory in the context of visual communication

8 Writing Learning Outcomes Learners will be able to demonstrate a mastery of: Design, Typographic and Imagemaking skills Appropriate media and technologies for the visualisation and communication of design ideas Current software applications for print and screen based design The skills appropriate to articulating design concepts and writing design documents The skills appropriate for the presentation of design concepts and design solutions.

9 Writing Learning Outcomes Learners will be able to demonstrate competence in The critical appraisal and creative evaluation of design problems and their solutions Researching, analysing and generating complex, strategic design solutions. Understanding and writing a brief Key skills such as problem solving, communication skills, teamwork, presentation skills and project management Selection of specialist design and production services

10 Writing Module Learning Outcomes A module learning outcome is a statement of what the learner is expected to be able to do on successful completion of the module to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding, skills and /or competences. Module learning outcomes focus on learning rather than teaching and they do not specify what the lecturer or tutor can provide but what the learner can demonstrate. All module learning outcomes should be assessable

11 Examples of Module Learning Outcomes Start module outcomes with the phrase: On successful completion of the module, students will be able to. These phrases should then be followed by action verbs so that students are able to demonstrate that they have learned and achieved the outcomes. Avoid using terms like know, understand or appreciate The terms used should reflect the particular stage of the course i.e 1 st year etc

12 Examples of Module Learning Outcomes At the end of this module learners will be able to: Identify basic terminology used in industry Identify leading design companies nationally and internationally Identify some of the skills necessary in becoming a graphic designer Become aware of the differing roles within the design profession Apply basic research and information skills Generate a range of design solutions Work independently and as part of a team Apply basic presentation skills.

13 Examples of Module Learning Outcomes On completion of this module, the learner will be able to: Use drawing to communicate design ideas Apply the principles of viewpoints and perspective Demonstrate an awareness of and facility to utilise a range of drawing media both paper and screen within the design process Apply drawing as an analytical and critical visual communication tool Document their design process using sketchbooks

14 Examples of Module Learning Outcomes On completion of this module, the learner will be able to: Write a design brief Carry out focused design research on and off site Visualise and storyboard a design proposal Author a digital prototype Use Information Architecture to document the design process Present work visually and verbally

15 Examples of Module Learning Outcomes On completion of this module, the learner will be able to: Demonstrate the critical application of design principles to the stages of the design process. ( research analysis, realisation, presentation) Apply typographic solutions to solving design problems Write a design brief and produce a design development document Apply a strategic design approach across a range of appropriate media Deliver a professional presentation of design work Manage learning tasks independently, professionally and ethically

16 Constructive Alignment Term coined by John Biggs in 1999 Students construct meaning from what they do to learn and lecturer aligns the planned learning activities with the learning outcomes Curriculum is designed so that learning outcomes are aligned with assessment methods The challenge is to devise assessment methods and criteria that actually test the learning outcomes E.G If a learning outcome is make direct contact with the design industry, then the production of an interview report with a design firm will be one of the ways this will be assessed.
