1 Presentation As a result of the World Health Organisation Conferences on women, considering women as the main agents of health and as a large collective group who must receive priority attention, one of the priorities established is that of incorporating and/or correcting possible gender biases in scientific works dealing with health. Nowadays there is a lack of Training Programs on the topic of Health and Women beyond subjects normally optional, isolated ones in different Grades of the areas of health and social sciences, what is more, there is an increasingly urgent need to train professionals in this field of knowledge in an integrated, coherent manner, as has repeatedly been pointed out in all the national and international documents cited below. In fact, it must be mentioned that health professionals time and time again refer to the need for training programs specifically centred on the study of Women s Health (see, as an example, the documents from the 1 st Women s Workshop, Health and Gender: Building a Women Health Observatory, held 5-6 October, 2004; or as well, the Forum of Violence against Women held October, 2004, both in the Ministerio de Sanidad y Consumo (Ministry of Health and Consumption). That means, there is a clear will to inform, research and spread the idea of the need for equality according to gender in health policies. The Spanish Observatory for Women s Health of the Ministry of Health and Consumption has subsidised the training of university teachers which has been taking place since October, 2005, via the Training of Trainers Program in Gender Health Perspectives. In similar fashion, professional associations have been making clear the need for including the study of women s health in the work and research carried out. As an example, we can see the manifesto published by the APA; American Psychological Association (July 28, 2004) which recommended the carrying out of a larger number of research projects on differences between sexes, gender identity and expression of these differences. Already in the International Committee for Women Task Force of Division 52, International Psychology, an important task has been carried out by creating the 1
2 report Cultural and Gender Awareness in International Psychology, which identifies the critical areas in psychological research from a transcultural standpoint. For all the above-mentioned reasons it is clear that there is a need for having training programs on women s health, which like this University Masters course on Women and Health, have two basic characteristics: a) Training which includes an eminently interdisciplinary approach, since different, complex perspectives are involved which are developed by different specialities of Psychology, Medicine, Sociology and other disciplines. b) Training which does not deal with women-related topics from atomist, medico-biolologistic and partial viewpoints, and which do not look as a whole at the rich, complex gender differences in different contexts. Aims The general training aim of the University Masters course(women and Health, is that of endowing professionals with necessary scientific knowledge to be able to understand, analyse and explain the gender perspective in the professional area in transversal form to any task in the professional environment. To achieve this aim, the Postgraduate of the University Masters course Women and Health has to be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding: a) in differences between sexes in ailing and dying and the consequences of this in health practice. b) On quality of life and degree of personal satisfaction, stress and psychological problems suffered by women, at different stages of their life and in different contexts. c) In the application of different techniques of prevention, operations and treatment to improve the state of health of women in our society. 2
3 Therefore, the problem of women and their health is the backbone of the Masters course, a problem which gives voice to different subjects which reflect and study in areas of clinics, health, work, social, etc, by means of the courses comprising this University Masters course.. 7 For whom the course is designed The University Masters course Women and Health is open to different types of graduates, such as those in Psychology, Medicine, Sociology, Education Sciences, as well as future graduates, nowadays Diplomas in Social Work, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and other Health Sciences. Students with these qualifications must cover the following requirements: a) Excellent marks in the first cycle b) Knowledge of English, at least at reading level: knowledge of other languages will be positively valued. c) Motivation and professional orientation to carry out the studies for the Masters course. Job opportunities in the labour market At this very moment there exist public and private bodies created specifically for the purpose of dealing with women as a group. At national level and by way of an example we can quote the Instituto de la Mujer, of the Ministerio de Igualdad (Ministry for Equality), and all the other Institutos de la Mujer in Spanish Autonomous Communities. All these Institutes have an area specifically devoted to women s health. Moreover, the Spanish Ministry of Health and Consumption has a Women s Health Observatory, which takes qualified people on its team, and often acts to incorporate professionals from other public bodies which are particularly orientated to women s health. Similarly, there are many private bodies, associations, foundations, etc, aiming to promote women s health, on a general level or in relation to some specific demand (cancer, AIDS, 7
8 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, etc.), both at the national and international level. Students obtaining the University Masters Degree in Women and Health can gain access to the different posts available in the above mentioned bodies, either particularly oriented to women s health, or to health in general, introducing the gender viewpoint.
