In both subjects students have to carry out a significant piece of training work under the direction of a tutor: a lecturer from the masters with the grade of PhD in the case of Research Work, and a tutor from one of the collaborating businesses in Practical Training in Food Enterprises, together with a lecturer with the grade of PhD (who will follow the student's development in the business enterprise). Both subjects have 9 credits and are tightly linked to this subject of final project, the Final Master's Work (6 credits), the assessment of which includes the presentation of a report of the work carried out in the practicum, including results and a scientific discussion of them. This report will be defended in public before an examining board approved by the Master's management committee and made up by doctors from the course and, if necessary, external staff from the entrepreneurial field and invited doctors. The examining board will assess the student report and its public defence, which will be considered in the final mark. Requirements Following, the requirements of the subject are given. 1 / 7
2 1, 2S Essential requirements It must be taken into account that, in order to develop the autonomous work of the subject, the student must have done the 'practicum' of the Master first. On the other hand, to do the final part of the subject (i.e. the public defence of the Final Master's Work) the student must have passed the rest of the subjects of the master. Skills The competences of the Master related with this subject are given below. Specific * Apply knowledge from the discipline to improve health (E4). Be fully aware of the fields of nutrigenomics and personalised nutrition and its repercussion in society (E5). Be aware of functional and bioactive components of foods (E7). Be able to design correctly experimental studies and apply them to the fields of nutrigenomics and molecular nutrition (E11). Be aware of sources of finance for research, development and innovation in the field (E13). * Be aware of progress in the fields of nutrigenomics, personalised nutrition and molecular nutrition and acquire necessary skills to update this knowledge constantly (E15). Knowledge of the market in the field of nutrition (E22). Be aware of the variety of fields of knowledge which form part of the areas of nutrigenomics and personalised nutrition (E23). Generic * Ability to organise and plan activities in field of study (G1). Ability to apply critical, logical and creative thought in work (G2). Ability to incorporate scientific progress in own professional field (G3). Ability to work independently and use initiative (G4). Skills and flexibility to solve problems effectively (G5). Ability to form hypotheses and design studies for their verification (G6). * Skills to analyse data and extract conclusions from results of research (G7). Ability to work interdisciplinarily (G8). Respect for ethics and intellectual integrity (G9). Ability to articulate knowledge in oral and written presentations (G13). - Advanced comprehension of the global context in which area of speciality takes place (G14). Ability to develop work in (lingua franca of the discipline) (G15). Understanding that advanced knowledge provides leadership abilities in the field (G17). Understand the value of knowledge for the community (G18). Ability to take part in aspects of contemporary society (G19). Ability to analyse the risk/benefit balance of nutrients and other food components (G20). Basic * You may consult the basic competencies students will have to achieve by the end of the Master s degree at the following address: Content After doing and passing the corresponding 'practicum' (i.e. 'Practicum: Research Work' in itinerary 2A or 'Practicum: Practical Training in Food Enterprises' in itinerary 2B), developed in other subject of the Master, the students must write a report, which corresponds to their Final's Master Work, based on the practicum. The instructions for the writing of the report will be available for the students from the beginning of the academic year. The students will be under the tutorship of one Doctor-lecturer of the Master for the preparation of the Final Master's Work. The students will have to register the project of the Final Master's Work (after 2 / 7
3 1, 2S obtaining the permission of the tutor/s), following the rules/normative of the UIB to proceed (these rules will be also given to the students at the beginning of the academic year), afterwards, once obtained the approval of the Master's management committee, the students will proceed to the public defence of the FMW and its assessment before an examining board approved by the Master's management committee. This is the final stage necessary for getting the Master degree. There are different research lines associated to the FMW, also associated with the practicum. At the beginning of the academic year, the students will be informed about these lines (and the tutors associated to them) in order they can manifest their preferences (by filling a survey form). The applications will be evaluated by the Academic Commission of the Master and its members will make the assignations, taking into account the preferences of the students. In case a same line/tutor is chosen by more than one student, the Academic Commission, together with the corresponding tutor, will make the assignment considering the CV and the academic marks of the previous studies of the students (in case it is considered necessary, also a personal interview can be done). The list with the assignment of students to the lines/tutors will be sent to the Centre of Postgraduate Studies. At the present moment of publication of this teaching guide (July 2013), the offer of research lines and tutors is the list given below, although it can suffer modifications and the definitive list will be given to the students at the beginning of the lessons: For students enrolled in profile 2A: - New nutrigenomic biomarkers and health claims on food (Andreu Palou, lecturer at the UIB) - Molecular nutrition and obesity (Andreu Palou, lecturer at the UIB) - Supplementation with prebiotics in perinatal nutrition and effects on the programming of energy metabolism (Ana M.
