A Diverse Industry Association Composed of Magazine and Catalogue Publishers, Paper Companies, Printers, Agencies, and Outside Resources Forms Partnerships between Different Industries to Find Solutions and Increase Efficiencies Different than TAPPI involves a Greater Variety of Industries & Resources AND Includes Actively Involved Customers

Increasing Number of Transit Damage Claims filed by the Printers on Customers Behalf Significant Number of Damaged Rolls Received in Rail Shipments Limited interaction between Major Railroads, Paper Mills and Printers Low Awareness of the Magazine Publishing Industry and awareness of the real effect of Transit Damage on the Printed Product
Membership List: 9 Fine Paper Companies: Verso, NewPage, Sappi, UPM, Resolute Forest Products, Irving Paper, Evergreen Packaging, Kruger & NorCell 2 Large North American Printers: RR Donnelley & Quad Graphics 6 Magazine Publishers: Time Inc, Hearst, Conde Nast, Meredith, National Geographic, AMI 6 Class 1 Railroads: BNSF, CN, CP, CSX, NS, & UP

Transit Wrinkles are found on Large Width Rolls usually >60 inches, but can be found on smaller widths under certain circumstances. They are the result of too much Swaying Movement in a Railcar. Rolls with Transit Wrinkles are normally located on the Bottom Tier. 38
Transit Wrinkles occur at the Bottom of the Roll along the Contact Point where the Roll touches the Railcar Wall. (Notice the Paint on the Roll from the Railcar Wall.) They look very similar to a Dropped Roll, but the Wrinkled Area is much Smaller and the Ridges tend to Intersect with One Another! 39 Paint on the rolls Traditional Transit Wrinkle look No Dunnage utilized
If you follow the Wrinkle Lines, they would Intersect. Bottom of the Roll Bottom of the Roll 40

(Not your Everyday Transit Wrinkle) A single tier Blocking Roll creates a Pinch Wrinkle at the Bottom of the Second Tier Roll and/or the Top of the Blocking Roll. Riser 42
Origin / Destination Pairs: Mill > Railroad(s) > Printer focus on reducing specific transit damage. Shipping Trials, New Load Plans, Data Laden Receiver Feedback, Railroad Involvement Monthly WebEx Presentations Share loading successes and other mill & printer initiatives. Mill Shippers from every mill location and Printer Receivers are invited. Over 50 people usually attend these WebEx presentations.

Direct feedback from Receivers to Mill Shippers. We don t wait for the claim to be filed to send on the damage in the railcar to the mill! details VersoPaperTransitDamageTeam@versopaper.com Shipmentproblems@newpagecorp.com RFPTransitAlert@resolutefp.com
Mills are Loading Better and Sharing Best Practices with each other. Receiver Attitudes are Changing - Accepting a more active Role in Reducing Transit damage: Communicating More closely with Mills, not just Filing Claims Bad Ordering/Rejecting Railcars at the time of Release Railroads are Listening, Responding and Valuing our Communication.
Understood the difference between Printing and Industrial Papers. Paper was Paper and it was all Alike. Seen the inside of a Fine Paper Printing Facility nor understood the demands placed on rolls of Coated Paper. Made Damage Prevention visits to many Large Printing Facilities. These Printers knew only the Local Yard Representatives. Fully Explained the Details and Options of the Car Release Screens
The Origin / Destination Pairs have, by their collaborative nature improved relationships between Receivers and Railroads Reducing Transit Damage also means protecting the Quality of Boxcars Receivers have begun: Rejecting boxcars at the time of release Sending more specific, detailed information to the car Maintenance and Fleet Management departments of the

NS, BNSF & CN have improved their release reject screens to allow more detailed feedback on the type and location of the boxcar damage. CP is collecting information to incorporate into their screen revisions. UP has a new Web Demo: Steps to Release a Defective Car in myuprr. Pan Am Completed full integration with the DDCT; Major initiative to repair Water Damaged Rail Cars is almost complete.
Began tracing the repair progress of bad ordered cars. Many Cars not owned by the Serving Railroad are placed into the DDCT for Home Shop. All the additional Damage Information provided by the Receiver is the LOST! Many times the car is not Flagged for Repair There is no available record of whether the defect was found and repaired. Can RailInc. or the Mechanical & Fleet Management Groups help with this?
