1 37 th Annual Conference for Ophthalmologists, Ophthalmic Technicians and Nurses, and Ophthalmic Office Staff Friday and Saturday, March FACULTY - PHYSICIAN SESSIONS David Huang, MD, PhD Dr. Huang is a Peterson Professor of Ophthalmology and Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Casey Eye Institute, Portland, OR where he performs LASIK and PRK with the CustomVue technology he also performs Intacs intracorneal implants, Verisyse phakic intraocular lens implants, astigmatic keratotomy (AK), and natural lens replacement procedures. He is also widely consulted for complications of LASIK, corneal transplantation and other corneal surgeries. Dr. Huang earned his MD degree from Harvard Medical School. He completed ophthalmology residency training at the Doheny Eye Institute, University of Southern California, and fellowship training in Corneal Diseases and Refractive Surgery at Emory University. He also earned a PhD degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the field of Medical Engineering and Medical Physics. As part of the PhD research, Dr. Huang co-invented optical coherence tomography (OCT), a high-resolution cross-sectional imaging technology that is now indispensable in the diagnosis of eye diseases. His PhD research also included development of femtosecond lasers, which are now widely used in corneal and refractive surgery. He is one of a very few doctors with deep understanding of laser surgery from both a clinical and engineering perspective. Dr. Huang is well known for his research and teaching in refractive surgery, laser and imaging technologies. He leads the Center for Ophthalmic Optics and Lasers ( The National Institute of Health (NIH) has awarded him four research grants totaling over eight million dollars. He has produced over 70 scientific articles and book chapters, 8-patented inventions and 2 books. He has taught 19 instruction courses at the American Academy of Ophthalmology and delivered 99 conference presentations and 44 invited lectures. Majid Moshirfar, MD, FACS, FACE Dr. Moshirfar is a professor of Ophthalmology at UCSF Department of Ophthalmology. He is currently co-director of the Cornea and Refractive Surgery Division, director of Proctor/UCSF Fellowship in Cornea, External Disease and Refractive Surgery and associate medical director of Beckman Vision Institute at UCSF Medical Center. Dr. Moshirfar earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine with Alpha Omega Alpha honorary recognition. He completed his ophthalmology residency at Illinois Eye and Ear Hospital in Chicago Illinois where he graduated as the sole recipient of the outstanding resident clinical ward. He completed a two-year fellowship with great emphasis on cornea/external disease, refractive surgery, and anterior segment reconstruction at the John A. Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah where he had been practicing for the last 16 years. Dr. Moshirfar specializes in LASIK, LASEK, PRK, Phakic intraocular lenses, Intacs, Collagen Cross-Linking as well as corneal transplantation, keratoprosthesis (artificial cornea), management of difficult corneal disorders, complicated cataract extraction, keratoconus, infectious eye diseases and other complex procedures of the cornea and anterior segment of the eye. Dr. Moshirfar has played a leading role in the development and dissemination of these procedures, particularly in the area of challenging refractive surgery techniques. Dr. Moshirfar has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed scientific publications and is on the editorial board of numerous scientific journals. Mitchell P. Weikert, M.D., M.S. Dr. Weikert is an Associate Professor at the Cullen Eye Institute, Baylor College of Medicine. Prior to pursuing a career in medicine, Dr. Weikert received degrees in both electrical and biomedical engineering, and worked as a design engineer in the petroleum industry. He obtained his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, where he graduated with honors. During his ophthalmology residency, completed at the Cullen Eye Institute, Baylor College of Medicine, he served as Chief Resident during his final year of training. He completed his fellowship in cornea, external disease, cataract and refractive surgery at the University of Utah School of Medicine s John. A. Moran Eye Center. Dr. Weikert s research interests include biomedical optics, anterior segment imaging, intraocular lens technology, and wavefront applications in cataract and refractive surgery. He is the Residency Program Director at the Cullen Eye Institute, Baylor College of Medicine and the Medical Director of the Lion s Eye Bank of Texas. He is a recipient of the Baylor College of Medicine Louis J. Girard Distinguished Alumni Award, the AAO Secretariat Award, and the AAO Achievement Award. 2 FACULTY - TECHNICIAN SESSIONS Registration at: Featured Speaker Savory Turman, COMT Savory is a certified ophthalmic medical technologist and has over ten years experience in the field of ophthalmology. She has extensive specialty testing experience from her role as Clinical Coordinator at a large teaching hospital in Texas, where she specialized in Goldmann Perimetry, and other imaging. Savory teaches regularly for JCAHPO at regional and national meetings on a variety of topics, including technical skills and leadership. Currently, Savory is the Clinical Director of a large multi- specialty clinic, at Eye Center of Northern Colorado in Fort Collins, Colorado where she manages a team of 49 technicians and tries to keep 15 doctors in line. In her spare time Savory enjoys time with family, travel, cooking, quilting, and running (usually with her chocolate lab, Scooby Doo). Technician and Nurse Program Course Topics/Objectives Uber Tech- Savory Turman, COMT This course will provide technicians with critical thinking skills generally reserved for experienced technical staff. Discussions will include the importance of history taking and utilizing a patient history to determine necessary pre- testing, and imperative behavioral traits of seasoned, skilled technician. Discussions will include principles of IOP measurements, IOL master measurements, visual field measurements, as well as how to perform refractions on difficult patients and how to detect subtle APDS. Uveitis and other Ocular Inflammatory Disease for the Ophthalmic Medical Technician - Akbar Shakoor, MD This course is an overview of the technician s role in the diagnosis and management of uveitis and other ocular inflammatory conditions. Surgical Repair of Common Retina Pathology: A Better Video Voyage. Ryan Isom, MD Discuss common retina pathology with videos of surgical intervention. Multiple case presentations will be discussed. The Wonder World of Oculoplastic Surgery Conley Call, MD Attendees will be introduced to several oculoplastic procedures through video presentations. Pediatric Ophthalmology: Clinical Pearls Leah Owen, MD, PhD This course will introduce the audience to common pathology in pediatric ophthalmology and highlight effective exam techniques. New Approaches to the Diagnosis and Treatment of Dry Eye- Amy Lin, MD Participants will be able to describe the various etiologies of dry eye diseases, and learn about traditional and new diagnostic tests. They will learn about new treatments for blepharitis and dry eye. Perimetry Phobia: Don t Fear the Field Savory Turman, COMT This course will provide technicians the basis of Goldmann and Humphrey Perimetry. Discussions will include the importance of visual field testing and the assistance that perimetry gives to diagnosis and treatment of patient conditions. Techniques on how to best gather visual fields and garner patient cooperation will be reviewed.
