BA (HONS) FASHION DESIGN
BA (HONS) FASHION DESIGN The BA (Hons) Fashion Design course is designed to prepare you for an exciting career in the fashion industry. With a focus on contemporary fashion design, the course encourages creativity whilst equipping you with all the skills needed to work successfully in the fashion industry. You will gain important industry experience during your 2nd year via high profile work placements with some exceptional companies. We have structured the course in such a way that as a graduating student we ensure you are fully accomplished in all areas from research, design development, pattern cutting and garment manufacture through to portfolio presentation. At the end of the 1st and 2nd year, you are guaranteed a place to showcase your work at a major fashion show in Cambridge. On successful completion of the 3rd year, you also have the opportunity to celebrate your final collection at one or more external venues in London and possibly outside the UK.
WHAT TO EXPECT YEAR ONE... To help you realise your designs in 3D, you will learn key skills that underpin research, design and development. You ll achieve this through a mixture of classes and workshops teaching sewing and presentation skills to digital skills and pattern cutting using Gerber CAD/CAM. You will complete the year showcasing your work at a professional fashion show. YEAR TWO... Core skills are refined and advanced via hands-on workshops and classes. The focus is on live design projects where you will negotiate a professional placement within the industry to better understand all aspects of fashion commerciality. Building from last year, you will round off the year showcasing a selection of your work at a fashion show. Smita Shantilal Mistry BA (Hons) Fashion Design I found out about CSVPA through UCAS and when I came for my interview I fell in love with the place. The atmosphere is really great, the people are lovely and I felt this was for me. It is so good here you have so much help and so much support. YEAR THREE... The final year demands a self-directed approach with modules including a series of warm-up projects followed by the development and presentation of your final collection. You ll take ownership of your portfolio choosing how to digitally present it and, in some cases, a short promotional video is created. On successful completion of the course, final year students will have the opportunity to participate in our high profile Graduate Show in London and possibly outside of the UK. awarded by Esmeralda Tuomi BA (Hons) Fashion Design The course has definitely exceeded my expectations! The projects are varied and interesting and there is so much bespoke, oneon-one teaching, so we get plenty of valuable help and support. 4 PROGRAMME OVERVIEW YEAR ONE SUBJECT MODULES... DESIGN PROCESS The module introduces you to key processes employed in the field of Fashion Design. It allows for a wide range of previous learning experiences. Typically the module begins with exploratory quick fire projects and process-based workshops. The workshops involve activities which will introduce you to key drawing, research and design skills for example: visualisation of ideas, Photoshop, illustrator, InDesign, surface design/digital print, understanding fabrics, developing reflective journals, fashion project development and analysing trends and influences. You will present their work in a portfolio/folder which will be used for assessment. FASHION PROJECT 1 The module provides an introduction to the process of design development within the context of a set brief. It explores aesthetics, structures and 3 dimensional forms; you will be encouraged to explore fashion in relation to social/cultural contexts. The module leads you to establish a practical skills base and encourages you to challenge your perceptions of creative practice. Projects build on the skills learned in Design Process and Technical skills 1 ; outcomes will be in three dimensions. TECHNICAL SKILLS 1 The module introduces you to fundamental manual skills and technologies involved in the process of designing and making clothes. It includes an introduction to construction methods, fabric qualities, basic pattern cutting, garment development and production techniques. Inductions to workshops will involve issues related to health and safety awareness. You are expected to document your work and compile a technical folder as you progress through the module. HISTORY OF FASHION The module will familiarise you with the history of Fashion to enable you to begin to develop an understanding of conventions within the field. It will pay particular attention to changes in the field during the last few decades. It will introduce you to a range of the key issues that have arisen around the field and introduce you to the basic concepts and theories influencing some of the critical debates used to examine contemporary Fashion Design. You will be exposed to a wide range of historical, social, political, economic and cultural contexts. The module will encourage you to reflect critically and to begin to locate your own work in a broad contextual framework. You will be introduced to key study skills and academic protocols. Throughout Levels 4, 5 and 6, subject lectures occur alongside research and writing skills seminars, which aim to provide you with the skills necessary to formulate informed arguments, and to present your ideas using appropriate methods and protocols. At Level 4, these seminars focus primarily on writing skills.
YEAR TWO SUBJECT MODULES... COLLABORATIVE & PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE This module is concerned with the development of professional and collaborative practice skills and the understanding of a range of routes and roles possible within Fashion Design. During the module you will negotiate an industry work placement or initiate an industry linked project of a self-employed nature. You will document all efforts to gain placement/ work experience, record all live projects undertaken, create a CV and produce a written report. Professional placements and work experience will be recorded in a log/journal. You will also undertake group project work to enable the development of collaborative design skills, focusing on the industrial and commercial context of fashion and clothing; business practices, ethics, economics and culture. Indicatively this part of the module will involve a Fashion business research project. You ll share all learning activities with peers; students in groups will negotiate project outcomes and will research, design and present: Business report, lookbook, collaborative design and peer evaluation report. Core skills are refined and advanced via hands-on workshop and classes. The focus is on 'live' design projects where you will negotiate a professional placement within the industry to better understand all aspects of fashion commerciality. Building from last year, you will round off the year showcasing a selection of your work at a fashion show. FASHION PROJECT 2 In this module you will begin to place your work in a commercial context. It provides experience of customer analysis and market placement. You will research and document retail environments and begin to define categories of fashion. The emphasis of the module is on design in relation to market and consumer. The module is based on Live Projects and Competitions giving you the experience of answering a real design brief in a commercial context. Projects are two-dimensionally based and will be assessed by the submission of a portfolio including all development work. TECHNICAL SKILLS 2 The module will develop knowledge and experience of the manual skills and technologies involved in the process of designing and making clothes. It builds on the skills established in Technical Skills 1. The module includes: advanced construction methods, advanced pattern cutting, garment development and production techniques. You are expected to compile a technical folder and document work as you progress through the module. FASHION DESIGN RESEARCH: CONCEPTS, IDEAS & THEORIES The module provides you with an opportunity to reflect critically upon your own work and to locate it in the context of contemporary practice. Attention is given to the analysis of concepts, ideas and theories related to the your own creative practice. The module will enable you to develop conceptual and analytical skills and to deconstruct assumptions. All issues covered will be described in relation to the work of contemporary practitioners. This module introduces you to some of the key issues informing contemporary design research. The module explores some of the psychological motivations underpinning design practice and the sublimated impulses behind consumption. You will be introduced to some of the analytical and critical methodologies used to describe design, material and visual culture to a standard appropriate to Level 5 study. While writing skills remain an integral part of the curriculum, the emphasis of seminars is on critical analysis. Level 5 students are required to reflect upon key texts from their chosen discipline, with the aim of improving their critical analysis skills so that they may be prepared for compiling the literature review which forms an important part of their work at level 6.
YEAR THREE SUBJECT MODULES... PROFESSIONAL PORTFOLIO This module covers all two-dimensional aspects relating to the illustration and promotion of the final collection. Projects within this module will support the three-dimensional outcome of a capsule collection of a minimum of six outfits. You will also be introduced to Fashion styling, photography and fashion film making. You will be given the opportunity to attend a workshop with a professional specialising in each of these areas in order to present your collection, or the concept behind it, via a photoshoot and short film. The module is also concerned with professional promotion skills; you are required to develop and present a professional portfolio, CV, business card and the opportunity to develop a blog/ website, which shows understanding of how best to promote and present their work, and skills, to potential clients within the Fashion industry. FASHION PROJECTS 3 This is the Capstone project, which is a large and final piece of work for the undergraduate degree, requiring extensive research, development and high production values and is supervised by one or more lecturers. The module will cover the main stages of designing for Fashion Design: research, design development and presentation. The module begins with warm up experimental design briefs that support a critical, individual and imaginative approach to Fashion Design, followed by the research and design development of their final major project The Final Collection. You will consider elements such as range planning, fabric development (knitted and woven), trimmings, accessories and styling. TECHNICAL SKILLS 3 This module involves advanced technical workshops, building on the skills developed in Technical Skills 1 and Technical Skills 2, and feeds into the development and realisation of the final collection. The final collection will be the production of final garments, including sourcing of fabrics and trims, through management of the collection and developing the ability to direct technical staff to achieve the initial collection proposal in 3D form. You will complete a collection of six outfits finished to a professional standard. Indicative content includes: experimental pattern cutting and draping; advanced digital pattern cutting. Working independently, but supported by specialist workshops and individual tutorials, you ll complete a toiled collection to be presented at the end of teaching block 1 and the final collection at the end of teaching block 2. DISSERTATION The module requires you to work independently; to exercise and deploy knowledge and skills acquired in earlier stages of the programme; to focus in depth on a specific and discrete topic in a given field; to develop and sustain a thesis, within a guiding theoretical framework. The preparation of a dissertation proposal, is to be approved by the Module Leader.
