1 London Health Commission Hearing Session 19 May 2014 Panel biographies Andrew Ridley Andrew Ridley is the Managing Director of NHS North and East London Commissioning Support Unit. Andrew has extensive experience in managing commissioning services and implementing a very effective commissioning support operating model in east London and the city. Andrew has held a variety of senior positions in NHS, including primary and acute care, and third sector management. Sir Ron Kerr Ron is Chief Executive of Guy s and St Thomas NHS FT. He took up the position of Chief Executive in October He has a wealth of experience including roles at a local, regional and national level. Previous roles include Director of Operations for the NHS Executive, Regional Director for North Thames Regional Office, and Chief Executive of the South East London Commissioning Agency. His early career also included work at several central London teaching hospitals and, prior to moving to Bristol, he was Chief Executive of the National Care Standards Commission. He is Chairman of the Association of UK University Hospitals. Ron is a member of the Quality, Finance and Investment and Workforce Committees. Dr Geraldine Strathdee Dr Strathdee is National Clinical Director for Mental Health at NHS England. Geraldine is a consultant psychiatrist in Oxleas NHS FT, and Visiting Professor, Integrated mental health education programme at UCL Partners. For over 20 years she has held senior roles in mental health policy, regulation and clinical management, at national and London regional levels, and advises internationally on mental health service design and quality improvement, while working as a practising clinician. Mr Jeremy Taylor Mr Jeremy Taylor is Chief Executive of National Voices, the national coalition of health and social care charities. Formerly a senior civil servant, Jeremy joined National Voices in 2009 to build its profile and impact as a major voice for patients, service users, carers and their representatives. He is regularly called upon as an adviser and speaker on patient voice and related issues. Attendee biographies Round table discussion 1 Maria Abraham Maria is Health and Wellbeing Manager at Tottenham Hotspur Foundation. Maria worked in advertising for 10 years in her native Finland as well as in London, and 10 years in the fashion industry in London before enrolling at university to study Health Promotion focusing on social marketing and Men s Health.
2 Before joining the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation in November 2010 to set up the Health & Wellbeing Department, Maria worked with Men s Health Forum as an intern and with a Social Marketing Agency as a free-lance Account Manager. As Health & Wellbeing Manager at Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, her role is planning health programmes, raising funds, managing partnerships and representing the Club and the Foundation at health related steering groups within local boroughs. Michael Adams Michael is a member of the youth advisory board at London Youth, Dare London, and he also sits on the London Youth Trustee Board. He was a member of St Mary s Youth Club, Islington and he currently works as a sports coach in the local community having started as a volunteer coach through his local youth club and is very passionate about youth sporting participation. Eleanor Botwright Eleanor Botwright has been the CEO of the Castlehaven Community Association since Eleanor has taken the Castlehaven from unfunded and unknown, to a high profile, award winning organisation held as a national model of best practice. From a campus of 4 community buildings, 2 community gardens and sports facility Eleanor uses passion, enthusiasm and innovation to manage & support a diverse team of staff, tutors, volunteers and interns to work tirelessly to deliver projects and services on an borough wide basis. Historically the principal purpose of her post has been to develop, direct and ensure the delivery of Castlehaven s huge and diverse range of activities. Currently Eleanor is focusing on ensuring organisational sustainability by developing social enterprises that will ensure survival of the charity during forthcoming fiscal uncertainty. John Dales John is Director of Urban Movement, a consultancy specialising in transport planning and the design of urban streets and spaces. He began life as a transport professional in 1984 and has been based in London for most of the past 30 years, including six working for a London Borough. He established Urban Movement at the start of His work over the past decade has focused on complex urban development projects and the detailed design of multi-functional, accessible and safe streets and spaces in urban centres and around stations. John is a streets design advisor to several UK local authorities, including Transport for London. John Jones John Jones is London Youth s Sports Development Officer for Central London, delivering the Getting Ready sports programme. He joined London Youth in January 2009 following a two year period working for Nacro as Bedford SCORE Project Coordinator. Working with Nacro and now London Youth he has seen firsthand what can be achieved through sport and what a positive impact it can have on young people and local communities. Working across so many sports, he has built up various coaching qualifications and enjoys the challenge of working with new young people from across London. Phillip Kerry
3 Phillip Kerry is London Youth s Programmes Director. His remit is to support and oversee programmes for young people and youth clubs covering sports development, employability, youth action and leadership work and the youth advisory board, Dare London. He is also responsible for overseeing London Youth s Woodrow High House Residential and Sports Centre. He has been working with young people for over fourteen years, including a spell in Eritrea from 2005 to 2007 as a teacher and trainer and five years at youth social action charity Envision. Prior to London Youth he was the Head of Operations on UpRising at the Young Foundation. Abdullah Mahmood Abdullah Mahmood is the Communications Support Officer at London Youth. He supports communications activity for all of the organisations programmes including Getting Ready, Build-it and Athan 31. Prior to London Youth Abdullah was Media Officer at the 2013 Balfour Beatty London Youth Games and has been involved in sport at a number of different levels and is passionate about young people being active in their communities. David Russell David Russell is Head of Health and Social Care at Spice Innovations. He has been involved in developing award winning volunteering and coproduction programmes in health and social care in London for over five years. Spice develop Time Credit programmes across the UK with local authorities and organisations. Over the past three years with Spice David has been leading an innovative Department of Health supported programme developing Time Credit programmes in a range of health and care settings looking at alternative models of support and community development in the health and care system. Alex Smith Alex Smith is founder and Chief Executive of North London Cares and runs day-today operations. He was formerly an aide to the Leader of the Opposition, Ed Miliband, and editor of one of the biggest political websites in the UK. Alex is a north Londoner born and raised. He is a governor at Holloway School and was a "Welcome the World" volunteer in Camden during the 2012 Olympics. He was awarded an UnLtd social enterprise award for his work founding North London Cares in Laura Woodley Laura Woodley is North London Cares' Projects Officer, responsible for creating and delivering our work on the ground, recruiting and mobilising volunteers and matching them to their older neighbours in lots of exciting and varied ways. Laura previously worked at a nursing and rehabilitation home for disabled servicemen, and before that as a documentary producer. Second round table discussion Dr Greg Battle Dr Gregory Battle has worked as a GP partner in Islington for over 20 years and continues to do so. Outside his clinical practice he has held leadership roles in Islington for 15 years including PCG Chair North Islington, PEC Chair Islington PCT, PBC Chair Central Islington and prescribing lead GP Islington. He trained at UCLH in London and worked as a junior doctor at UCLH and the Royal Free
4 hospitals. After a Masters in Public Health from Trinity in Dublin he worked for the Irish Government in Sudan. He was primary care advisor to the Whittington Hospital 10 years ago and is now bringing his primary care clinical and leadership experience to Whittington Health to ensure delivery of the best possible integrated care for the local population. Councillor Pat Callaghan Councillor Callaghan represents the borough s Camden Town & Primrose Hill ward; she is Deputy Leader of the Council and Camden s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health. Her Cabinet role includes providing strategic leadership on complex families, as well as customer services and right first time public services. Pat is also Chair of Camden s Health and Wellbeing Board. Pat gained invaluable experience working with diverse communities and understanding healthcare in her previous career as a nurse, working in the NHS. Having been a local resident for some time, Pat has first-hand knowledge of the issues affecting the community, and through working closely with many community groups she is actively seeking solutions to improve the quality of life for all residents within the area. As a mother of five, Pat is concerned with resources and provision for the youth of Camden community and works closely with Castlehaven Community Centre. Pat is also proud to be a Governor of St Michaels junior schools. Pat also is a member of the Licensing Committee and enjoys being on the forefront of Council activity. In this way, Pat feels that she can effectively meet the needs of individuals within her ward. Professor Robert Daracott Rob Darracott has worked in the NHS and Department of Health and spent 8 years with Alliance UniChem, working in the UK and in Europe. He joined the Company Chemists Association as its Chief Executive in 2007, and has led the joint representation body Pharmacy Voice since December Rob was co-chair of the Modernising Pharmacy Careers review of pharmacists training, and chaired the Steering Group on Improving the Use of Medicines, which reported to the Department of Health in He was appointed Honorary Professor in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Nottingham in Professor Martin Elliott Professor Martin Elliott is Co-Medical Director at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) with specific responsibility for safety and quality. He is Professor of Paediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at University College London and was Chair of the Cardiorespiratory Directorate at GOSH. He is Director of the National Service for Severe Tracheal Disease in Children. Professor Elliott trained in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Southampton and London and has been a consultant at GOSH since His research interests have included the patho-physiology of cardiopulmonary bypass (developing modified ultrafiltration), clinical outcomes analysis (establishing the European Congenital Heart Defects database, now the EACTS database), the nomenclature of congenital heart defects (of which society he was the founding president), effective teamwork (with F1 teams and BA) and the management of congenital tracheal stenosis. This last research project has recently led to the first stem-cell supported tracheal transplant in a child and to expansion of research in tracheal tissue engineering.
5 He has over 250 peer reviewed publications and has delivered more than 300 invited lectures, including several named lectures. He teaches and operates throughout the world and sits on several NHS committees and advisory groups. He is committed to safe, effective and efficient care of children. Dr Gillian Greenhough Dr Gillian Greenhough is a local Islington GP and has been Chair of the Clinical Commissioning Group for three years. She has a background in public health as well as in general practice and has been elected to Chair the CCG by all GPs in the 37 practices across Islington. Melanie Hingorani Melanie Hingorani qualified from Oxford University and Guy s Hospital Medical Schools. She obtained an MD (research in allergic eye disease) at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and trained at Moorfields Eye Hospital and the Western Eye Hospital. Mrs Hingorani works as a Consultant Ophthalmologist in the fields of paediatric ophthalmology and ocular motility at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London and at Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Huntingdon and has a particular interest in paediatric external disease and corneal eye disorders. She is Clinical Director for Quality and Safety at Moorfields. Sue Pritchard Sue Pritchard is a Specialist Nurse for Looked After Children. Qualifying as SRN in 1981 at St Bartholomew s Hospital, Sue spent the next 9 years staffing on a variety of wards before taking Sisters posts in ENT outpatients and then Night duty for 2 years. Sue Health Visited for 10 years. The next 11 years were spent out of the NHS, employed by a Housing Association, eventually managing a project for homeless families, largely asylum seekers, involving advice, support, ESOL, advocacy and empowerment. Sue also took on the role of Safeguarding Officer for the Housing Association. Recently she spent 2 years as a Safeguarding Advisor and is now a Specialist Nurse for Looked After Children. William Roberts William Roberts is Director of Strategy and Planning at Camden CCG. William is an experienced NHS manager with a clinical background. As a trained nurse, he has worked in both hospital and community services and was a Nurse Specialist in tuberculosis (TB) and HIV. William s first management role was running a clinical network and he held a variety of commissioning and senior management roles in the NHS prior to joining Camden, including Associate Director of Public Health and Assistant Director of Strategy and Planning. For a number of years, William was a visiting lecturer in commissioning at City University in London and still lectures on a range of subjects. He leads strategy and planning for Camden CCG and is responsible for performance, engagement and partnerships. David Sloman David Sloman has been Chief Executive at Royal Free London since During this time he has been successful in obtaining Foundation Trust status for the organisation and leading the trust towards acquisition of Barnet & Chase Farm Hospitals NHS Trust, planned for July David was formerly chief executive of the Whittington hospital and before that he was chief executive of NHS Haringey.
6 He has spent his career in healthcare management, most of it in the NHS, although he worked for a number of years in the private healthcare sector. David is an executive member of UCL Partners, a board member of the north central and north east London LETBE, LCRN partnership group chair and the CRN: North Thames R&D advisory group chair, the chair of the London Leadership Academy, and a trustee/non-executive director for Skills for Health. Wendy Wallace Wendy is the Chief Executive of Camden and Islington NHS FT and has more than 30 years NHS clinical and leadership experience. She was appointed CEO in December 2005 and led the Trust to Foundation status in early Prior to becoming CEO she was Director of Islington mental health services in C&I, where she led the opening of the Highgate Mental Health Centre, our flagship inpatient site. She was formerly an Assistant Director at London NHS Executive and a Director at Bromley Primary Care Trust. Wendy s clinical background is as a clinical psychologist. She is a strong advocate for recovery, social inclusion and service user involvement and is very proud of C&I s strong track record of research and innovation. This is enhanced by membership of UCL Partners. Wendy is currently the chair of the London Mental Health Chief Executive Group. Rosemary Westbrook Rosemary Westbrook joined the London Borough of Camden as Director of Housing and Adult Social Care in Prior to that she was Director of Housing at Westminster City Council from She was Director of Housing and Neighbourhood Services at Slough Borough Council and has over 20 years experience in local government. She began her career in the Department of Health.
