3 (1) PMP Certification: Obtaining and Maintaining Obtaining the PMP Certification (the short story ) 4500 hours (~3 years) of PM experience 35 hours of PM education (training) 200 question (4 hour) exam Refer to PMP Handbook (pp 8-35, see URL) 3

4 (1) PMP Certification: Obtaining and Maintaining Maintaining the PMP Certification (PDUs) Three year cycle begins the day you pass the exam At cycle renewal (the day before your exam anniversary date): You must have recorded at least 60 PDUs You must pay the renewal fee ($60 for members) Else (on your anniversary date), one year PMP credential suspension you are no longer a PMP. After the one year, if requirements not met, credential expires and you need to re-apply. Refer to PMP Handbook re: PDUs (pp 38-52, see URL) 4

5 (1) PMP Certification: Obtaining and Maintaining Earning PDUs: Refer to the PMP Handbook and the CCR System to determine what exactly qualifies for PDU credit One PDU for one hour of activity May be earned in quarterly increments (15 min = 0.25 PDU) Keep PDU documentation (in case of audit) for at least 18 months after the end of the three year cycle Two major sections for PDUs credits: Education Giving Back to the Profession 5

6 (1) PMP Certification: Obtaining and Maintaining Earning PDUs (maximums per section/category within the 3 year cycle): Education section, no min/max # of PDUs, see pp /1/15 change: minimum of 35 PDUs, minimum 8 PDUs in each of 3 skills areas Category A: PMI Courses (Chapters, REPs, communities) Category B: Continuing Education (college PM courses) Category C: Self-Directed Learning (read, watch, discuss) max of 30 PDUs per 3 year cycle in Category C Giving Back to the Profession section, max of 45 PDUs, see pp /1/15 change: max of 25 PDUs Category D: Creating New PM Knowledge (author, present) Category E: Volunteer Service (PM organizations) Category F: Working as a PM Professional (PM work) max 5 PDUs per year (15 per cycle) for at least 6 months of PM work in the year 12/1/15 change: max of 8 PDUs per three year cycle in this category 6

7 (1) PMP Certification: Obtaining and Maintaining Recording PDUs: Recording as PDUs are earned is highly recommended Submitting online via CCR System is preferred by PMI Submitting via hard copy is an option (see pg 49) Your deadline is the day before your exam anniversary date at the end of your three year cycle OK to transfer 20 of PDUs to your next 3 year cycle, but only those PDUs earned in the 3 rd year of the 3 year cycle (see pg 48) OK to apply PDUs to multiple PMI credentials, within limits (see pp 50-51) 7

8 (2) Recent Changes Announced by PMI (2a) PMP Exam Content (Outline and Questions) PMBOK has not changed (still 5 th Edition) (2b) CCR (Continuing Certification Requirements) Updates CCR: the PMI.org facility for planning/recording PDUs The ideal skill set the PMI Talent Triangle is a combination of technical, leadership, and strategic and business management expertise. Effective 1 December 2015 the CCR program will be aligned with the employer-identified skills depicted in the PMI Talent Triangle to ensure PMI certification holders are equipped to remain relevant in a continually changing business environment. Leadership: Knowledge, skills and behaviors specific to leadershiporiented skills that help an organization achieve its business goals. Strategic and Business Management: Knowledge of and expertise in the industry or organization that enhances performance and better delivers business outcomes. Source: 13

14 (2b) Recent Changes Announced by PMI Technical Project Management: Examples: advanced project management, techniques to improve your WBS, how to gather and document requirements, risk management for your portfolio. Leadership: Examples: negotiation, communication, motivation, problem solving, and conflict resolution, etc. Strategic and Business Management: Examples: product knowledge, industry knowledge, business acumen, innovation strategy alignment, market strategy alignment, differentiation strategy alignment, customer strategy alignment, finance, marketing, etc. Source: 14
