Lecturer Mehmet ATEŞ Lecturer Sevda ÖZDEMİR Research Assistant Yasemin ATA Research Assistant Levent DEĞİRMENCİOĞLU Research Assistant A.Tolga ÖZDEMİR Research Assistant Ali ÖZDEK General Description of the Institution The faculty of Fine Arts, which aims to idealize a?brand? in art education, was established in 1993 with the departments of Painting, Sculpture, Music Sciences, Film and Television, Ceramics, Stage Decors and Costumes. The faculty of Painting and Sculpture initiated the curriculum in the years of 1993-1994, and the departments of Music, Film and Television initiated its courses in the years of 1995-1996. By the foundation of the Faculty of Communication in 2002, the Film and Television department has become one of the branches of the Faculty of Communication. The Music Sciences department has altered its name as the department of Music in 2004-2005 academic years. The department of Graphic Designing was established in 2005, and aims to initiate its curriculum in 2006 with the department of Stage Decors and Costumes. In this respect the department of Graphic designing has changed the name of Stage Decors and Costumes as the Stage Arts. It also aims to establish Major Arts of Theatre branch, and Major Arts of Instrumental branch in the Faculty of Music. The Postgraduate Studies were established in the department of Music in 2003-2004 academic years. The major concern of this program is to offer new opportunities to the students. Furthermore, the faculty grant students with Master's degree, who intend to be painting and music teachers for the primary and the secondary schools. The Institute within the Faculty of Fine Arts has enterprise to run courses in MA and PhD Painting, Sculpture, Music, Ceramics, and Graphic designing programs in the 2006-2007 academic years. Our faculty with its well-designed buildings, qualified staff, modern ateliers, individual studying rooms, lecture and concert halls offers privileged facilities to the students. Those, who want to participate in courses, may apply for the graduate and the postgraduate programs by fulfilling the pre-registration forms, and by passing the performance exams. The pre-registration forms and the performance exam dates are available at our website.

List of Degree Programs Offered The departments of paintings, sculpture, music, ceramic and glass design, visual communication design offer Bachelor of Arts degree (B.A.). The Faculty also offers masters (M.A.) and doctorate (Ph.D.) programs in cooperation with the University's Institute of Fine Arts. The degree programs are as follows: M.A. in Paintings, M.A. in Sculpture, M.A. in Music, M.A. in Ceramic And Glass Design Ph.D. in Paintings, Ph.D. in Music Admission / Registration Procedures The candidates are obliged to submit the diplomas and the documents certifying that the requirements to be mentioned in the section INFORMATION ON DEGREE PROGRAMS/ Admission requirements are fulfilled. INFORMATION ON DEGREE PROGRAMS

Qualifications Awarded Qualifications awarded are BA in the departments of paintings, sculpture, music, ceramic and glass design, graphic design. MA in in Paintings Sculpture, Music, Ceramic And Glass Design and PhD in Paintings and Music. Students who gain BA degree from the faculty's undergraduate programs have employment opportunities in the fields such as working as a freelance, advertisement, tourism and public service. Those who gain MA degree from the faculty's masters programs are generally the employees in the public and private sectors who seek to improve their personal capabilities and skills in their fields of work. The student profile of the doctorate programs, on the other hand, is generally composed of research assistants of faculties or those individuals who intend to gain advanced research skills in their fields of interest Admission Requirements Admission Requirements to the Undergraduate Programs: Admission requirements common to all three undergraduate programs are as follows: 1. High school diploma, 2. Placement to one of the programs by ÖSYM[1]. 3. Passing Test Faculty Aptitude/ Ability The above-mentioned requirements for full enrolment in the degree programs apply to the students who are the citizens of Turkey and to the foreign students who have gained a diploma from a university in Turkey. The foreign student with a diploma from a university abroad has to submit YÖK[2]'s certificate of recognition for his/her diploma and the certificate of proficiency in Turkish from TÖMER[3]. Educational and Professional Goals The aim is to enhance the students in various fields of fine arts. The students are expected to go through the phases of research, recognition, experience, and production of original works of art. They are continuously encouraged to develop their own artistic and critical formation. All deparments, in every stage of their education appraise orginality, practise of scientific methods, ability of analysis, timing, capability of material. To teach the students how to learn, give them the basic tools and skills besides leading them to learn the theory and practical applications. To emphasize the student's development as artist, researcher, and professional. To introduce them to past and current trends, as well as to theories and practices To help them have a career in community and cultural organizations. Access to Further Studies After receiving their first-cycle degrees, graduates of the faculty may apply to the Institute of Fine Arts to study towards their second-cycle degrees. Applicants coming from other disciplines such as music, paintings, sculpture, ceramic and glass Design become eligible for taking master's; paintings and music for taking doctorate courses. Examination and Assessment Regulations Attendance to classes: It is compulsory to attend at least 80% of the classes in all of the degree programs. Exams and Course Grade: The course grade will be based upon the performance of the student on the midterm exam and the final exam. The weights of the grades received in the midterm and final exams are 0.4 and 0.6 respectively. Properly done homework, project papers and active class participation will be valued in favor of the student. Passing Course Grades for the courses in the Degree Programs: The curve system which conforms to the European standards is applied only in the undergraduate programs. A letter grade of at least CC is required. A minimum of 50 out of 100 points in the final exam and a minimum course grade of 65 out of 100 points is required in the Master's Program. A minimum of 50 out of 100 points in the final exam and a minimum course grade of 75 out of 100 points is required in the Doctorate Program. Make-up Exams: No make-ups for the final exams. Make-ups for the midterm exams, if ever allowed by the relevant boards, are of greater difficulty because of the greater time given to the student for preparation. Overall Course Grade for the Degree Programs: It is the weighed average of the course grades. The local credits of the courses are used as the weights.

GENERAL INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS

Accommodation The University has two dormitories in Kayseri (one for males the other for females) each with a capacity to house 1500 students. The rooms vary from two to six beds. Central heating and hot water are available. Lunch and dinner are served. Barbers/hairdressers, internet café, laundry facilities, dry cleaning services and study halls are the additional conveniences that are provided. Private dormitories, student hostels, or flats in Talas or in the city center are among the other accommodation alternatives. No matter where the student stays, he/she can easily commute to and from the campus by means of public transportation. Meals A dining hall with a capacity of 2500 students is available on the main university campus in Kayseri. The menu is prepared by dietitians and is served throughout the academic year between the hours 11.00-13.00. The meals are nutritious, warm and palatable. Half of the total cost of the meals is covered by the Students Social Service Fund. There are also faculty canteens, restaurants and pastry shops where students are regularly served tea, coffee, soft drinks and various dishes prepared under hygienic and healthy conditions Medical Facilities Students who apply to Medico-Social Health Centre are given medical treatment for a small charge. If the need be, they are transferred to Gevher Nesibe Hospital of the university. The students with dental problems are treated in the dental unit of the Medico-Social Health Centre. Tooth pulling, cavity filling, and canal treatment are among the services provided by the center. Various medical tests are also done at the Medico-Social Laboratory. Psychological counseling and guidance is also provided for the students by the Medico-Social Unit. Facilities for Special Students' Needs In the faculty building a lift has been installed and a classroom made available on the ground floor to serve the physically challenged students. Free accommodation in the furnished flats of Demir Karamancı Housing Complex is offered by the University to the highest-achieving undergraduate students.

Insurance Insuring all of the students against minor accidents has been put into practice as of 2004-2005 academic year. Insurance that covers the costs of therapy, prolonged injury and death is provided at a very small cost to the students. Financial Support for Students The students who are genuinely in need of financial support and who have not failed in any of the courses they have taken thus far qualify for scholarships. The Credit and Dormitories Institution, the Turkish Education Foundation, Erciyes University Foundation, Feyzioglu Foundation, the Ministry of Education are the major institutions that grant the scholarships. Providing on-campus employment opportunities is the other widely practiced means of financial support in the university. 15 of our students are currently employed on a part time basis in the computer laboratories, the library and the bookstore. Student Affairs Office The data concerning student grades and other personal information are stored and processed by the central Student Affairs Office. The staff in the faculty feeds in the exam grades to the centralized system. The office in the faculty provides several documents, such as, certificates of graduation, transcripts, student ID's etc., upon student request. Study Facilities The courses are lectured in 28 classrooms that range from 80 to 220 students in capacity. One of the classrooms is equipped with audio-visual systems. A medium sized conference hall with a system for simultaneous translation is also available for the faculty as well as the other units of the university. In the four computer laboratories with the Internet access for 200 computers, the courses are carried out on a one-computer-onestudent basis. A continually enriched library, currently with about 7000 books, 3000 periodicals and on-line catalog service, is available for student and faculty use. The library itself and the reading room on the ground floor serve the students as a calm and comfortable studying environment. International Programs The following package of courses is placed in our curriculum to serve our students as well as the ERASMUS exchange students within the scope of European Education and Youth Program. The syllabuses for the courses all of which are lectured in English are as follows:

Internships In order to complement his/her theoretical knowledge with practical training, the student is obligated to complete an internship program in a firm operating in the service or manufacturing sector. Practical training has to be completed within a period no less than a month in the summer preceding the student's senior year. Upon the completion of the internship, the student must submit the relevant documents to his/her supervisor. The students are obliged to prepare an internship report in which they are expected to interpret and evaluate the knowledge and experience they have gained. At the end of the practical training period, internship evaluation document is confidentially filled and signed by the firm which has employed the student. Sports Facilities Students may benefit from indoor and outdoor sports facilities on the campus. The Süleyman Demirel Sports Hall is conducive to playing basketball, volleyball, badminton and handball. Students have access to the 80 th year Atatürk Indoor Football Complex. There are also four outdoor tennis courts, four outdoor basketball courts, two indoor volleyball courts and four outdoor mini football fields. The semi-olympic sized swimming pool complex in the campus and the Skiing Center on Mount Erciyes, approximately 25 km south of Kayseri, are as well worthy of mention. Sports festivals are organized every year under the title of the Rector's Cup. The teams of the faculties also participate in the university games in all fields of sports organized nationwide. Basketball and volleyball teams representing the University compete in the official Turkish leagues. Extramural and Leisure Activities It is among the highest ranking priorities of the university to bolster cultural and artistic events. Cultural activities such as Turkish classical music, Turkish folk music, and symphonic music recitals and drama performances are carried out all through the academic year. The spring festival which brings together a variety of lively events has already become a well-established tradition. During the festival, students have the chance to attend concerts given by Turkey's prominent singers, to take part in conferences, panels, and to visit the booths displayed by the student organizations and by the local as well as nationwide companies. Throughout the annually organized interuniversity theatre festival, theatre groups from various universities and the leading theatre companies visit our university and perform their plays. The duration of these two festivals is one week and they are both open to the community in Kayseri. As for our faculty, several plays have been performed a large number of times by the Drama Club both in Kayseri and in other cities of Turkey. The club has been presented with numerous awards in festivals it participated in. Detailed information concerning

these performances is available on our website. Graduation parties with the participation of the parents have been traditionalized. Student Association No student association in the university. However, there are quite a large number of clubs serving the academic, sportive, cultural leisure pursuits of the students. Just to mention a few: Fine Arts Club, Architecture Club, Astronomy Club, AEGEE, Scientific Research Club, Skiing Club, Korean Culture Club, Ceramic Club, Dance Club, Drama Club, Music Club, Chess and Bridge Club, etc. Regular Meetings with Students Holding periodical meetings with the students is mentioned above among the steps for achieving our long run goals. Our faculty has already taken this step by making it a tradition to have meetings with the undergraduate students on the last Wednesday of each month. The dean, the vice deans and the students take part and exchange views in the discussions.
