9 General Description of the Institution The Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, a non-profit state institution, is one of the oldest and most prestigious faculties of Erciyes University. It started education on January 7, 1980 with 75 students enrolled in the department of business. Currently, a total of 2800 students are in its undergraduate programs. The Faculty provides education in a way that aims at fostering students critical and analytical thinking skills and thus having them equipped with the capabilities necessary for active participation in the global professional life. As of 2004 fall semester, the faculty employs a total of 65 academic staff: 15 professors, 6 associate professors, 14 assistant professors, 30 research and teaching assistants. 23 of the academic staff have gained their undergraduate and graduate degrees from the universities in USA, England, France and Germany. The Faculty offers three undergraduate programs each with a length of four years: business, economics, and public finance. Students take the English Proficiency Exam prior to the freshman class. Those who pass this test are entitled to directly attend classes in their respective programs. However, those who fail the Proficiency Test are required to attend a one-year preparatory English program at the School of Foreign Languages. As a follow-up to the English preparatory education, students also take various English courses throughout their studies at the faculty such as: Advanced English, Translation from English to Turkish, Translation from Turkish to English, and Written Communication in English. The rich curricula of the faculty, the detailed contents of which are to be presented in the forthcoming sections, consist of standard must courses and a smorgasbord of elective courses to meet the student s needs and interests. In some elective courses the medium of instruction is English. The departments of business and economics offer day-time classes as well as evening classes, whereas the department of public finance, which is relatively a new program, currently offers only day classes. 6

10 List of Degree Programs Offered The departments of business, economics, and public finance offer Bachelor of Arts degree (B.A.). The Faculty also offers masters (M.A.) and doctorate (Ph.D.) programs in cooperation with the University s Institute of Social Sciences. 12 General Arrangements for the Recognition of Prior Learning The recognition of prior learning is carried out in compliance with The Council of Higher Education regulations regarding education, training and students. 9

13 General Registration Procedures The students fulfilling the general admission requirements are entitled to enrollment in the degree programs. They are required to submit the diploma and the other documents certifying that requirements are fulfilled before the registration deadline determined by ÖSYM (Student Selection and Placement Center). Students take the English Proficiency Exam prior to the freshman class. Those who pass this test are entitled to directly attend classes in their respective programs. However, those who fail the Proficiency Test are required to attend a one-year preparatory English 10

37 Arrangements for Academic Guidance Beginning from the first year of study, all students are assigned an academic advisor from the faculty. Academic advisors assist students in choosing and registering for courses, and provide them with information on career opportunities and academic regulations. 34

39 Qualifications Awarded Qualifications awarded are BA in economics, business and public finance, MA in economics and business, and PhD in economics and business. Students who gain BA degree from the faculty s undergraduate programs have employment opportunities in the fields such as banking, manufacturing, insurance, advertisement, tourism and public service. Those who gain MA degree from the faculty s masters programs are generally the employees in the public and private sectors who seek to improve their personal capabilities and skills in their fields of work. The student profile of the doctorate programs, on the other hand, is generally composed of research assistants of faculties or those individuals who intend to gain advanced research skills in their fields of interest 36

57 Occupational Profiles of Graduates Business Graduate students get jobs, particularly at managerial levels, both in private and public sector in numerous fields such as marketing, public relations, foreign trade, human resources management, banking, finance, certified councillorship, and accounting. Besides, a considerable amount of our students launch their own businesses. Economics The students graduated from Economics undergraduate program find career opportunities in all private sectors of economy, notably in finance sector, and in a variety of job fields including inspectorships and specialists in public institutions. Public Finance Graduate students work in public sector, particularly in the fields of public finance and auditing, banks operating in the semi-public and private sectors, financial institutions, and other enterprises. International Relations Graduate students will be able to work in public institutions such as ministers, international organizations, non-governmental institutions, and private companies. 54

58 Access to Further Studies After receiving their first-cycle degrees, graduates of the faculty may apply to the Institute of Social Sciences to study towards their second-cycle degrees. Applicants coming from other disciplines such as engineering, history and foreign language have to attend the Institute s one year Preparatory Program to become eligible for taking master s and doctorate courses. 55

The course grade will be based upon the performance of the student on mid-term and final exam. 40% of the midterm exam and 60% of the final exam constitute the raw grade of the course. 98 Cost of Living Cost of living in Turkey is considerably cheaper than most EU countries. For international students, estimated living expenses in Kayseri is per month. Cost of living mainly depends on where you stay. There are several accommodation options available for international students; staying in a private dormitory close to campus or sharing an apartment with Turkish students. For those students that choose private accommodation near campus, it is just a short bus ride or within walking distance. No matter where students stay, they can easily commute to and from campus by using public transportation. 95

99 Accommodation The University has two dormitories in Kayseri (one for males the other for females) each with a capacity to house 1500 students. The rooms vary from two to six beds. Central heating and hot water are available. Lunch and dinner are served. Barbers/hairdressers, internet café, laundry facilities, dry cleaning services and study halls are the additional conveniences that are provided. Private dormitories, student hostels, or flats in Talas or in the city center are among the other accommodation alternatives. No matter where the student stays, he/she can easily commute to and from the campus by means of public transportation. 96

100 Meals A dining hall with a capacity of 2500 students is available on the main university campus in Kayseri. The menu is prepared by dietitians and is served throughout the academic year between the hours The meals are nutritious, warm and palatable. Half of the total cost of the meals is covered by the Students Social Service Fund. There are also faculty canteens, restaurants and pastry shops where students are regularly served tea, coffee, soft drinks and various dishes prepared under hygienic and healthy conditions. 97

101 Medical Facilities Students who apply to Medico-Social Health Centre are given medical treatment for a small charge. If the need be, they are transferred to Gevher Nesibe Hospital of the university. The students with dental problems are treated in the dental unit of the Medico-Social Health Centre. Tooth pulling, cavity filling, and canal treatment are among the services provided by the center. Various medical tests are also done at the Medico-Social Laboratory. Psychological counseling and guidance is also provided for the students by the Medico-Social Unit. 98

104 Financial Support for Students The students who are genuinely in need of financial support and who have not failed in any of the courses they have taken thus far qualify for scholarships. The Credit and Dormitories Institution, the Turkish Education Foundation, Erciyes University Foundation, Feyzioglu Foundation, the Ministry of Education are the major institutions that grant the scholarships. 105 Student Affairs Office The data concerning student grades and other personal information are stored and processed by the central Student Affairs Office. The staff in the faculty feeds in the exam grades to the centralized system. The office in the faculty provides several documents, such as, certificates of graduation, transcripts, student ID s etc., upon student request. 102

106 Learning Facilities The courses are lectured in 28 classrooms that range from 80 to 220 students in capacity. One of the classrooms is equipped with audio-visual systems. A medium sized conference hall with a system for simultaneous translation is also available for the faculty as well as the other units of the university. In the four computer laboratories with the Internet access for 200 computers, the courses are carried out on a one-computer-onestudent basis. A continually enriched library, currently with about 7000 books, 3000 periodicals and on-line catalog service, is available for student and faculty use. Kayseri is situated in the heart of Central Anatolia and 320 km from Ankara (the capital of Turkey). The city is located on a plain between the large curves of the Kızılırmak River and the wide skirts of Erciyes Mountain. Kayseri is a popular tourism center for skiing and winter sports. Mt. Erciyes (3916 m) is an ideal place for climbing and winter sports, located approximately 25 km to the South of Kayseri. In the Kayseri area there are many natural wonders such as Ala National Park, Kapuzbaşı Waterfalls and Sultan Sazlığı. In nearby Göreme, a popular tourist area and Soğanlı Valley, famous for its handmade dolls and historical churches is 80km from Kayseri. Kayseri is a major transport nexus for the region. You can reach Kayseri by either plane or bus. Kayseri Erkilet International Airport (ASR) is approximately 5 kilometers (3 miles) away from the city center. There are several flights every day to the Istanbul airports which are Turkey's premium air transportation hub. During the summer months there are some direct flight from European countries to the Kayseri airport. Kayseri has a busy bus station with very frequent and convenient coach service to and from Ankara and Istanbul as well as other cities in Turkey. The journey from Ankara takes about 5 hours (316km) and from Istanbul 12 hours (770km). Buses and trams provide an excellent and inexpensive means of transportation throughout the city. Taxis are an easy, private form of transportation to get around the city. Buses are an inexpensive form of public transportation that you can use to travel to different parts of the city. Tickets or proximity cards need to be purchased in advance from a ticket seller; they are located at various bus stops/ shops throughout the city. The climate in Kayseri is typically continental; the summers are long and pleasantly hot with cool nights; there is little rainfall or humidity. The winters are cold with some rain and snow. 105

109 Language Courses The EILC course (Erasmus Intensive Language Course) organized by Erciyes University International Office is available to students and teaching staff who will be following courses at any Turkish University as part of the Erasmus program, and who come from the member and candidate countries of the EU, plus Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. 106

110 Internships In order to complement his/her theoretical knowledge with practical training, the student is obligated to complete an internship program in a firm operating in the service or manufacturing sector. Practical training has to be completed within a period no less than a month in the summer preceding the student s senior year. Upon the completion of the internship, the student must submit the relevant documents to his/her supervisor. The students are obliged to prepare an internship report in which they are expected to interpret and evaluate the knowledge and experience they have gained. At the end of the practical training period, internship evaluation document is confidentially filled and signed by the firm which has employed the student. 107

111 Sports and Leisure Facilities Students may benefit from indoor and outdoor sports facilities on the campus. The Süleyman Demirel Sports Hall is conducive to playing basketball, volleyball, badminton and handball. Students have access to the 80th year Atatürk Indoor Football Complex. There are also four outdoor tennis courts, four outdoor basketball courts, two indoor volleyball courts and four outdoor mini football fields. The semi-olympic sized swimming pool complex in the campus and the Skiing Center on Mount Erciyes, approximately 25 km south of Kayseri, are as well worthy of mention. Sports festivals are organized every year under the title of the Rector s Cup. The teams of the faculties also participate in the university games in all fields of sports organized nationwide. Basketball and volleyball teams representing the University compete in the official Turkish leagues. 108

112 Student Association No student association in the university. However, there are quite a large number of clubs serving the academic, sportive, cultural leisure pursuits of the students. Just to mention a few: Fine Arts Club, Architecture Club, Astronomy Club, AEGEE, Scientific Research Club, Skiing Club, Korean Culture Club, Ceramic Club, Dance Club, Drama Club, Music Club, Chess and Bridge Club, etc. 109
