WELCOME TO THE HEMU University of Music Lausanne (HEMU), located at the heart of Europe in French-speaking Switzerland, is renowned for its highly qualified faculty members, its challenging and comprehensive programme of studies, and its firm commitment to music on the regional, national and international levels. The HEMU s classical and jazz departments (the latter is the only one of its kind in French-speaking Switzerland) afford students university-level training based on both theory and practice, and facilitate their immediate entry into the professional world at the end of their studies. The HEMU s Bachelor s and Master s degrees are accredited by the Swiss Confederation and the Musique et arts de la scène division of the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland (HES-SO), Switzerland s largest professional training network. www.hemu.ch 06

INSPIRING LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS The HEMU includes three teaching sites located in Lausanne, Fribourg and Sion. Lausanne, one of Europe s premier cultural and educational centres, is on the edge of the UNESCO World Heritage Lavaux region. Its other institutions of higher learning include the Ecole Polytechnique Fédéral de Lausanne (EPFL), the Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne (EHL), and the Ecole Cantonale d Art de Lausanne (ECAL). The International Olympic Committee (IOC) headquarters and the nearby Montreux Jazz Festival are two of Lausanne s other internationally renowned focal points. MUSIC FOR EVERY TASTE Studies at the HEMU lead to Bachelor s and Master s degrees, which in turn lead to a professional career. Additional continuing education courses for advanced students are also offered. The amount and variety of course offerings enable students to access a wide range of professional activities. Students can work towards becoming a concert artist, an orchestral player, a soloist, or an orchestral or wind instrument conductor, as well as studying sacred music, composition, and music pedagogy. in lausanne in Fribourg in Sion Surrounded and stimulated by Lausanne s unique cultural and intellectual environment, HEMU students bask in the exhilarating atmosphere of the Flon and downtown Lausanne neighbourhoods. Inside the HEMU building, the numerous high-quality concert halls, teaching studios and practice rooms, in addition to the school s instrumental and technical resources, contribute to highly favourable learning conditions. All the HEMU Bachelor s degree programmes and the majority of its Master s degree programmes are based in Lausanne. The modern Fribourg HEMU site is just a few kilometres away. Located in one of Europe s most beautiful medieval cities, the site welcomes students working towards Master s degrees in wind band conducting and sacred music. Distinguished instruction in singing and in string and wind instruments is also offered. The Sion site, set at the heart of the Rhone Valley in the Swiss Alps, is suffused with the same energy. The legacy of the famed Hungarian violinist Tibor Varga and the Music Academy that bears his name, with which the HEMU shares a building, ensure excellent instruction for students of string instruments, piano and guitar. tools for becoming a musician The HEMU faculty is made up of internationally recognised professors with significant teaching experience in their fields. The HEMU also places great emphasis on creating a learning environment that includes meaningful hands-on experience. ACTIVITIES OPPORTUNITIES The HEMU offers highly appealing pedagogical workshops, orchestra and contemporary music workshops, numerous chamber music opportunities, and intensive preparation for orchestral auditions and concert series. Advanced students are exposed to real-life working conditions during concert tours in the greatest concert halls in Switzerland and abroad. Another part of the HEMU s excellence is its master classes, given by prestigious musicians of global stature and through partnerships with internationally recognised institutions of music. Master classes afford gratifying pedagogical experiences to students, as well as enabling them to build valuable professional networks. www.hemu.ch 08 www.hemu.ch 09

A STIMULATING LEARNING ENVIRONMENT Most of the HEMU s 150 teaching studios are equipped with a Steinway piano. The numerous HEMU concert halls, each with optimal acoustics, is another plus. LIBRARIES The HEMU library in Lausanne contains more than 20,000 scores and 4000 reference works, which may be borrowed free of charge by students and faculty. A special partnership also enables Fribourg and Sion students and faculty to borrow from local libraries. MULTIMEDIA ROOM PRACTICE ROOMS The multimedia room is equipped with a dozen computers, through which students can access Internet and international music databases. High quality individual listening stations are also available. Practice rooms are available to students who are unable to practice at home. 11

LIVING THE HEMU EXPERIENCE TO THE FULLEST The HEMU strives not only to create a motivating learning environment, but also to facilitate the lives of all its students. Its partnerships with Lausanne University may assist students in finding housing. COURSES OF STUDY BURSARIES The HEMU s recognition by Swiss authorities enables it to offer state bursaries. Several private foundations also have strong partnerships with the HEMU. These offer bursaries and exceptional financial aid, as well as prizes to the best and most deserving students. Students participating in international exchange programmes such as Erasmus may also be eligible for financial aid. A WARM WELCOME The HEMU student community is centred on the Student Association, which welcomes new students, offers advice and help, and plays an active role in organising student events and social gatherings. The HEMU years are an intense and unforgettable time for students. The encounters and experiences of this period help to forge character and artistic sensibilities. The university campus atmosphere that suffuses the HEMU buildings reminds students that they should seize the moment while building their future. www.hemu.ch 12 13

DEGREE INFORMATION The HEMU applies the Bologna higher education reforms, whose goal is to standardise university teaching and degrees across Europe. Affiliation with the Association Européeenne des Conservatoires (AEC) guarantees the highest standard of musical instruction. HEMU studies are divided into two cycles. The first, leading to a Bachelor of Arts in Music degree (BA), usually lasts three years and requires a total of 180 ECTS credits. Students wishing to enter the second cycle, which leads to a Master s degree, must have a BA. The Master s degree (MA) programme requires a total of 120 ECTS credits, usually lasts two years, and leads to a Master of Arts in Music degree. Students may also work towards a second Master s degree with a maximum of 90 required ECTS credits. BACHELOR S DEGREE MASTER S DEGREE The goal of this programme is to impart the knowledge and techniques specific to each discipline, while also promoting a more interdisciplinary general approach. The Bachelor s degree (unlike the Master s degree) is not a professional qualification. The Master s degree allows students to hone the skills they acquired in their BA studies. As a training programme for future music teachers, its goal is to impart scientific knowledge to tomorrow s music professionals. The HEMU Master s degree programme emphasises the strong link between research and teaching while also accentuating creativity and performance. Due to the high number of applications, all Bachelor s and Master s degree applicants must take an entrance examination, which evaluates their musical ability, professional plans, personality and motivation. CLASSIC & JAZZ MUSIC Thanks to its exclusive partnerships with numerous musical and cultural institutions, ensemble activities are a HEMU highlight. ensembles THE HEMU ORCHESTRA THE HEMU CHOIR THE HEMU STRING ORCHESTRA THE HEMU JAZZ ORCHESTRA This symphony orchestra, which explores the traditional classical repertoire as well as contemporary and experimental music, is a showcase for HEMU talent. It performs an eclectic selection of works by Mahler, Mozart, Brahms, Haydn, Weill, Poulenc and Takemitsu, to name only a few. The orchestra also collaborates with the HEMU Choir and the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, as well as taking part in performances organised by the Lyric Workshop in a variety of regional opera houses and theatres. Prestigious guest conductors lead the orchestra on these occasions. This choir enables students to participate in vocal ensemble music on a regular basis. Its varied repertoire includes a cappella works as well as those with instrumental accompaniment. Guest conductors replace the choir s tenured conductor for special projects. Certain performances are given with the HEMU s Classical Orchestra. In recent years the HEMU Choir has sung major works such as Honneger s Le Roi David and Stravinsky s Symphony of Psalms. The legacy of Hungarian violinist Tibor Varga lives on at the Sion site, where highly specialised string instruction goes hand in hand with the HEMU String Orchestra, which gives top-flight performances throughout the region. Among the fifty ensembles in the jazz department, the largest is the big band which performs several times per year on national and international stages. BRASS & RHYTHM LES VOCALISTES THE LAUSANNE CAMERATA ORCHESTRA (OCL) THE FRIBOURG CAMERATA The Brass & Rhythm Ensemble enables students of brass instruments to perfect their orchestral playing through performances of the symphonic repertoire. Brass students, along with students from the percussion section, give a public concert on a specific theme each year. The first such performance, which explored American music, presented works by Bernstein and Barber. Les Vocalistes concentrate on small ensemble singing. Students work in small groups to improve listening and sight-reading skills, and cover a wide repertoire. Several concerts are given each year. The ensemble s premiere performance, given by students in the professional track programme, featured Vaughan Williams A Serenade to Music. A performance of Schumann s Das Paradies und die Peri was the high point of another concert. This internationally renowned ensemble gives Master s degree students a coveted chance to combine high-level musical training and professional working conditions. The Lausanne Camerata, whose ranks include musicians from a variety of countries, gives numerous concerts and tours throughout the year. An audition is required for students wishing to join the ensemble. The ensemble issues yearlong renewable contracts to successful candidates. The Lausanne Camerata performs internationally in such locations as Paris, Venice, Singapore, Shanghai and Moscow, and has made two recordings. This string ensemble is made up of violin students at the Fribourg site. Internationally renowned artists join them for certain public performances. www.hemu.ch 18 www.hemu.ch 19

music WORKSHOPS LYRIC WORKSHOP THE LIEDER AND ART SONG WORKSHOP CONTEMPORARY MUSIC WORKSHOPS The lyric arts have always occupied a special place at the HEMU. An opera is presented every two years to a vast regional audience. The Lyric Workshop features all-around training for opera singers including intensive work in body training, body/voice coordination, and theatrical technique. Notable Lyric Workshop performances have included Britten s Midsummer Night s Dream and Mozart s Don Giovanni. This Workshop arose from a wish to perform the German lieder and French art song repertoire. Groups of student singers and instrumentalists prepare performances in cooperation with singing, stage direction and accompaniment faculty. A variety of contemporary music workshops are available to Bachelor s degree students, and continue during the Master s degree programme. By taking part in ongoing projects that allow them to work with guest composers, students are exposed to a variety of contemporary schools of thought and trends, as well as to writing techniques and current modes de jeu. Contemporary Music Workshop participants are privileged to work with well-known partners such as the Société de Musique Contemporaine and the Archipel Festival. The Radio Suisse Romande also records certain Workshop concerts. CHAMBER MUSIC CHAMBER MUSIC HEMU students regularly play chamber music, an essential part of their studies as well as their future careers. Second-year students select a piece from their repertoire for public performance. Specific instruction is given for each instrument group. www.hemu.ch 20

THE JAZZ DEPARTMENT Jazz studies at the HEMU emphasise ensemble playing, of prime importance for every musician, throughout the degree programmes. More than forty ensembles cover every style, including contemporary classical music, traditional jazz, and all styles of current pop music. Each ensemble performs publicly at least once a year. APPLIED RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT concerts JAZZ FESTIVALS THE MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL JAM SESSIONS PUBLIC CONCERTS The best ensembles from the Jazz Department are invited to perform every year at the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Verbier Jazz Festival, the Cully Jazz Festival, the Auvernier Jazz Festival and JazzAscona. Students taking part in the Montreux Jazz Festival Off receive a recording of their performance. Playing at one of the world s top jazz festivals enables them to be heard by large audiences and to make valuable professional contacts. HEMU jam sessions take place every Monday evening during the school year. Jazz ensemble performances are scheduled every Tuesday at noon. Student concerts in Lausanne clubs take place every Tuesday and Wednesday night. Student groups are also regularly invited to perform in the major jazz clubs of German-speaking Switzerland, as well as at regional events and during graduation ceremonies. www.hemu.ch 22 23

A PROFOUND COMMITMENT TO RESEARCH The HEMU s Applied Research and Development Department (Ra&D) organises and coordinates research activities. Research projects are carried out by instrumental and theory professors, often in partnership with other institutions including universities, foundations, audiovisual media groups and orchestras. HEMU research strives to establish mutually enriching and productive links among teaching, performance and artistic creation. Students Bachelor s and Master s degree projects also make an important contribution to the department. Introductory research courses are given in both the BA and MA degree programmes. Research projects result in a wide variety of articles, books, scores, recordings, concerts, radio programmes, presentations made during conferences and congresses, and Internet sites. Research results are made widely available not only to researchers but also and especially - to musicians, performers, teachers, and interested amateurs. PEDAGOGY PERFORMANCE Pedagogical research explores instrumental, vocal and music theory instruction, to individuals as well as to groups, and in professional as well as non-professional settings. It also delves into the passing on of knowledge, new technologies, programmes of study, and the variety and specificity of the learning public. Performance research examines the historical and innovative dimensions of music making, questions tradition, and looks into the status of performers as well as their relationships to audiences and to society at large. It also looks into performers health and emotion management. ARTISTIC CREATION Research deals with current tools and techniques available to composers, exploring new works, and the overlapping domains of composition, improvisation and choreography. www.hemu.ch Published research is listed on the HEMU Internet site, along with guidelines on submitting research projects, and on how projects are carried out and evaluated. www.hemu.ch 25

THE BACHELOR S DEGREE PROJECT Each Bachelor s Degree candidate undertakes a final project in his or her last year of studies. A pedagogical framework and assistance are provided by the student s principal instrument teacher, theory teachers, and the special bachelor advisor. Project topics are associated with the student s final recital, and concern either one of the pieces the student plays or his/her instrument. Sample topics could include a specific aspect of instrumental technique, instrument building, repertoire, composition, or a personal arrangement of a piece. EXCHANGE PROGRAMMES AND INTERNATIONAL STUDIES www.hemu.ch 26 27

EXCHANGE PROGRAMMES INSTITUTIONAL PARTNERS The HEMU s membership in Erasmus, the European exchange programme, enables second or third year Bachelor s and Master s students to complete part of their studies at another conservatory or university. Permission must be given by the HEMU and an application completed. Students participating in exchanges with certain institutions may be eligible for bursaries. Studies in another institution last from one to two academic semesters. Grades and ECTS credits obtained from the host institution are validated by the HEMU. The HEMU also regularly hosts guest students from foreign universities and conservatories. The HEMU maintains close relationships with foreign universities and conservatories as well as with other local, national and international institutions. These partnerships provide students with enriching experiences and interesting professional perspectives. A partial list of these institutions follows: INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS International organisations including the European Association of Conservatoires (AEC), and the International Association of Schools of Jazz (IASJ). Four conservatories in Singapore (the Young Siew Tow Conservatory and the Lasalle College of the Arts) and in the USA (Peabody University in Baltimore and Westchester in Pennsylvania) collaborate with HEMU students and faculty for summer school courses. REGIONAL PARTNERSHIPS Lausanne music schools including the Conservatoire de Lausanne, the Ecole de Jazz et de Musique Actuelle (EJMA), the Fribourg Conservatory and the Valais-Sion Canton Conservatory. Internationally renowned musical events such as the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Verbier Jazz Festival, the Cully Jazz Festival, the Auvernier Jazz Festival and JazzAscona. The Lausanne Opera offers complete training for future opera singers through the Lyric Workshop. The Lausanne Chamber Orchestra (OCL) and the Lausanne Sinfonietta welcome selected HEMU students for workshops and performances. The Haute Ecole Pédagogique Vaud and the Universities of Lausanne and Fribourg collaborate with the HEMU on applied research projects and in promoting music pedagogy, performance and creativity and innovation. The Haute Ecole de Musique de Genève, the Ecole Rudra-Béjart, the Haute Ecole de Théâtre de Suisse Romande, the Jeunesses Musicales de Fribourg, the Schubertiades de Sion, the Olympic Museum, and many other partners are listed on www.hemu.ch. The HEMU also works with such celebrated schools as the Manhattan School of Music, New York University and the Paris Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse. The HEMU organises joint concerts with Italian conservatories in Como, Cosenza and Fiesole, and with German conservatories in Leipzig and Weimar. www.hemu.ch 28 www.hemu.ch 29
