2 The HES-SO has almost 15,000 students distributed among 27 schools in the cantons of the Arc Jurassien region (French-speaking Berne, Jura, Neuchâtel), Geneva, Fribourg, Valais and Vaud. 3 The courses Basic education Total Bachelor students In order to obtain an HES-SO bachelor s degree, students must obtain at least 180 ECTS credits. This corresponds to three years of full-time study. Part-time or mixed study is also possible. 39 degree courses are offered within the six fields of study at the HES-SO Master students In order to obtain this qualification, students must obtain 90 ECTS or 120 credits, corresponding to one and a half or two years respectively of full-time study. Part-time or mixed study is also possible. The HES-SO currently offers 15 master s degree courses. 8 HES-SO key dates 1994 The Conference of the cantonal offices for professional training of French-speaking Switzerland and Ticino (CRFP) decides to create a single UAS for Western Switzerland The Swiss Parliament votes in the Federal law on UASs. The Ordinance comes into force in The Ordinance for the creation and management of the Universities of Applied Sciences (OHES) of 11 September 1996 sets out the Federal law on the UASs. It specifies in particular the degree courses, the approved qualifications, as well as the measures relating to professional development and applied research and development The Intercantonal Concordat on the HES-SO is signed. It binds the cantons involved and determines the structures and operational methods of the HES-SO. It relates to the fields of Engineering Sciences and Architecture, Business, Management and Services and Applied Arts The Intercantonal Agreement on the UASs regulates access to the Universities of Applied Sciences at intercantonal level, together with the contributions to be made by the students home cantons to the UAS authorities The Intercantonal HES-S2 Convention creates the UAS of Health and Social Work of Western Switzerland (HES-S2). The degree courses start a year later The Federal Council grants the Strategic Committee the authorisation to manage the HES-SO for an unlimited period Merge of SO and S2 : the study fields of the HES-SO (Engineering Sciences and Architecture, Business, Management and Services, Design) and the HES-S2 (Health, Social Work) are brought together under the label of HES-SO. Preparation starts of a single agreement Integration of music into the HES-SO provision, in the form of a new field of study. The Intercantonal Agreement on the Universities of Applied Sciences (AHES) of the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Ministers of Education (CDIP, 12 June 2003) comes into force in This text specifies the contributions to be made by the students home cantons to the UAS authorities Start of the integration of the fine arts into the HES-SO provision The HES-SO is given the authority to launch eight new master s degree courses (in the fields of Engineering Sciences, Business, Management and Services, Music, Design and Fine Arts). These augment the existing provision in Architecture and Cinema In April, the Federal Council confirms the HES-SO s management authorisation. This decision highlights the attractiveness of this institution for students, the successful implementation of the bachelor s and master s cycles and the quality of its operational management. At the end of November the Strategic Committee of the HES-SO submits a preliminary draft of the Agreement to the Federal Council In February, the Federal Department of Economic Affairs authorises the launch of the master s in Nursing Sciences offered jointly by the HES-SO and the University of Lausanne. In August, the group of experts appointed by the Federal Council submits its report on the preliminary draft of the Agreement. At the start of the semester in September, the HES-SO Master s course welcomes almost 280 students to the new Provence-Lausanne premises. More information 8
