Dear Preceptr: This site has been prepared t rient yu t the Psychiatric-Mental Health Advanced Practice Nurse Practitiner prgram and t yur rle as a clinical preceptr. All students participating in clinical placements in the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitiner prgram are Registered Nurses wh are enrlled in graduate studies in the Schl f Nursing in a prgram leading t the Master f Science in Nursing degree. Students cmplete a year f full time study r may attend part time t cmplete basic requirements prir t enrlling in their clinical specialty ptin, which is typically dne in the 2 nd year f full time graduate study. The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitiner prgram cnsists f three clinical placements, typically begun in the Fall, and carried thrugh Spring and Summer semesters. The Fall and Spring clinical curses are paired with a thery curse in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing and the summer curse includes sme thery as well as clinical experience. PRACTICE PSYCHIATRIC MENTAL HEALTH NURSE PRACTITIONER Prerequisites fr the prgram are statistics and an undergraduate nursing research curse apprved by the Schl f Nursing. The APRN-PMH track is 49 credit hurs. Rle f Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitiner Prgram Clinical Preceptrs Preceptr Overview The philsphy f the WSU Advanced Practice Nurse in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing prgram is t prepare students t functin in a variety f psychiatric/mental health care settings. Students gain experience wrking as cllabrative members f the health care team. The APN-PMH student is prepared t practice clinical skills, including health assessments, advanced psychiatric assessments, diagnsis f psychiatric cnditins, mental status examinatins, pharmaclgical assessments and management, psychiatric management f patients with prblems in living r psychiatric disrders utilizing varius treatment mdalities such as individual, family r grup psychtherapy, psycheducatin, and cnsultatin. Clinical experiences are supprted by faculty and preceptr supervisin and versight. Preceptr Statement Preceptrs assist curse respnsible faculty and are practitiners wh prvide direct teaching t students apprpriate t the curse and prgram bjectives. Preceptrs fr clinical specializatins may include bth advanced practice nurses (APRNs) and nn-nurse practitiners (usually physicians). Each preceptr must be credentialed and state licensed t practice in his/her specializatin. Natinal certificatin is highly encuraged althugh nt required in Kansas fr APRN status. Preceptrs must have educatinal preparatin and/r extensive practice experience apprpriate t his/her supervisry respnsibility. Newly prepared preceptrs must have at least ne year f practice experience in the specializatin. Orientatin t the preceptr rle, including prgram requirements, expectatins fr versight and evaluatin f students, are prvided fr each specializatin. Student evaluatin is the respnsibility f the faculty with input frm the preceptr. Experiences with preceptrs are evaluated by students and faculty t enhance prgram develpment and student learning activities. Dcumentatin f preceptr qualificatin is maintained in the Schl f Nursing. The WSU nursing department, students and preceptrs each have a respnsibility regarding the clinical experience f the student. The preceptr s respnsibilities include: 1. Prvide the student with an rientatin t the practice setting and clear expectatins. 2. Assume primary respnsibility fr the actins and educatin f the student in the clinical setting, including assist the student in finding clinically relevant activities t meet requirements case assignment supervisin r cnsultatin when the student has questins regarding clinical cases cmmunicatin with the student and WSU faculty abut student prgress tward educatinal gals

The student's rtatin is individually structured t prvide a wide variety f clinical experiences t meet educatinal gals. The fllwing practicums are scheduled accrding t individual students needs.

Nursing 822 Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing Practicum I This curse is an intensive clinical experience in which the student assesses the individual client, and plans, implements and evaluates nurse-therapist strategies with individual clients. Learning regarding psychiatric theries f psychtherapy and tls and techniques fr individual cunseling accmpanies the practicum. Nursing 922 Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing Practicum II This practicum is an intensive clinical experience in which the student analyzes grup prcesses and initiates and evaluates therapeutic strategies with grups. Emphasis placed n the perfrmance f grup therapy as well as psychiatric assessment which includes interpretatin f relevant data, differential diagnsis, and develpment and implementatin f management plans. Apprpriate interventins t prmte the grup prcess are emphasized. Nte: Practicum hurs are 4:1 making a ttal f 240 clinical hurs fr the practicum. Nursing 952 Advanced Nursing Practice Preceptrship A cncentrated clinical practicum in the student s specializatin health care setting that emphasizes the management f care fr individuals. Students synthesize cncepts and principles frm previus classes and clinical experiences, applying theretical and research cntent t acute, chrnic, urgent and/r cmmn health prblems. Preceptrship is in a clinical agency apprpriate t the student s clinical interests. Practicum hurs are 4:1 making a ttal f 180 cntact hurs fr the practicum Attendance The student must cntact the preceptr and instructr prir t an absence r change in schedule. The student is respnsible fr arranging make up f missed days f a practicum. If a student has greater then five absences (40 hurs r greater) due t illness r ther circumstances they may be required t repeat the clinical rtatin. Learning Objectives The student will cnstruct a cntract with specific learning bjectives t accmplish during each clinical rtatin. Learning plans will be reviewed and endrsed by the clinical instructr, preceptr and student. The cntract serves as an utline f learning bjectives during t clinical rtatin. Guidelines fr Clinical Activity fr PMH students The fllwing guidelines will be applied during the clinical rtatins fr students. Students cannt prvide patient care withut adequate preceptr supervisin. The APN-PMH students, like all students, have varying degrees f skill and experience and must be assigned accrdingly. The fllwing guidelines shuld be bserved: 1. Treatment prcedures shuld always be apprved by the Preceptr prir t implementatin (life threatening emergencies are the exceptin). 2. Students cannt admit r discharge patients withut direct preceptr guidance. 3. An Advanced Practice Registered Nurse r Physician shuld always review student activities and versee management f cases. 4. Students agree t perfrm nursing interventins in accrdance with the standards fr practice set by the Kansas Bard f Nursing Nurse Practice Act and the Scpe and Standards f Practice fr Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing Practice as delineated by the American Nurses Assciatin. 5. Any unethical behavir is subject t dismissal f a student.
