Connection speeds range from 1Mbps to 20Mbps making it an ideal technology for most small to medium sized businesses. There hae been many misconceptions about broadband, and in particular ADSL technology. From the use of "up to" in marketing, to the confusion of contention ratios. One of the more common misunderstandings is that ADSL is not a business grade solution. This is actually partially correct, at least if it is bought from a home user centric ISP. LEASED LINE (FIBRE) A leased line or priate circuit is the generic term gien to a dedicated priate Internet circuit or point-to-point connection. Once the domain of large corporations or ery rich organisations, leased lines hae now become more affordable and readily aailable. Fibre optic leased lines typically delier speeds from 10Mbps to 1Gbps (1,000Mbps) and offer the greatest security, stability, and reliability as well as speed guarantees. Exa offers a wide range of leased line technologies from low cost to full blown EAD fibre optic gigabit circuits, and where required, dark-fibre networks with irtually limitless bandwidth. Download speeds from 10 Mbps to 100 Mbps Ultra fast upload speeds No contention within Exa s network Fantastic alue for money No monthly data limits Speeds from 10 Mbps to 1000 Mbps (1Gbps) Upload speed is the same as the download speed Same day speed upgrades aailable exa.im/connectiity These products are at least four times faster than the fastest ADSL 2+ serices. FLEXIBLE NETWORK SOLUTIONS exa.im/solutions Exa utilises the ery latest technologies to delier the most flexible, reliable, innoatie, and cost effectie solutions. Priate IPVPN, MPLS networks, and direct point-to-point fibre optic connections are just some of the types of network solutions that Exa deliers to its customers. Priate DSL based MPLS networks proide a cost effectie alternatie to the more expensie full fibre optic MPLS network, but proides multi-office organisations with an efficient and effectie wide area network solution which is equally capable of deliering inter-site data communications. EFM (Ethernet First Mile) is a copper based leased line serice which utilises multiple copper pairs to increase capacity and throughput. It is a low cost alternatie to fibre optic circuits, deliering priate connectiity to organisations who are looking to take the next step up from broadband but may not yet be ready to inest in a fibre solution. EFM is also a good solution for those organisations which find themseles in unfortunate geographical locations, where standard connectiity is poor yet there is a genuine need for more bandwidth. Exa Networks has access to the majority of Exchange Nodes in the UK meaning that we can delier an EFM serice to any business within node coerage. Fibre optic leased line circuits proide the fastest, most reliable and robust network deliery options aailable. This form of connectiity is also the most expensie. Yet, for those organisations who realise that the guarantees of speed, capacity, stability, and reliability form the caeat which determines the requirement for fibre optic solutions, Exa is at hand to delier, and will help to ensure that you hae the right solution for your organisation. Retail Chain The Client A well established national discount retail chain with a wide range of merchandise such as Ladieswear, Menswear, Kidswear, Sportswear, Footwear, Electricals, Housewares, Toys and Gifts, Beauty and Fragrance, and stores across Great Britain & Northern Ireleand. The Requirement With millions of transactions carried out both in stores and at its Head Office, the legacy network comprising of copper leased lines and ISDN phone lines was proing to be slow, inefficient, and expensie. Our brief was to proide a network which would increase network efficiency and speed, and reduce operational costs. Our Solutions We replaced all ISDN phone lines connecting each of the computerised tills at all stores, networked the tills to a master till, installed a single PSTN phone line running our Priate DSL serice at each of the stores, and built a secure Priate DSL based MPLS network. Replacing the copper leased line at the Head Office with a high capacity fibre optic circuit ensured that data and transactions could now be transferred oer the network at high speed and with more efficiency. The point of using Exa Networks was that by installing Exa s award winning ADSL serice and making it Priate (blocking Internet access), and installing an Exa fibre optic leased line, all data was kept within the priate MPLS cloud, keeping it secure and making the network more operationally efficient. It also reduced running costs significantly and contributed to an increase in sales because customers were now moing through the tills quicker. The Client One of the UK s leading Uniersities. The Requirement With an increase in the number of students, including oerseas students, and a shortfall in accommodation, the uniersity realised that it would need to build in order to fulfil its accommodation requirements to its students. Plans were passed and building began on the new Student Village which would proide more than 1,500 rooms across six large, modern, purpose built and sustainable accommodation blocks set within attractie gardens and a central picnic area. The requirement was to delier a 2Mbps Internet connection to each of the accommodations rooms, and proiding wired and wireless connectiity to all residing students both inside and outside the accommodation blocks. Our Solutions Gigabit fibre optic Internet links and a resilient fibre optic ring were installed within the accommodation complex. Using a combination of Cisco, Ruckus and HP equipment we built a large managed network comprising of wired connectiity to Ethernet sockets in each of the rooms, and wireless connectiity using 147 Ruckus access points to delier high leel signal strengths across all of the accommodations blocks and right across the required external area. A web portal was also deeloped and specifically designed to handle account actiations and proide support. Case Studies Student Village The solution deliers synchronous connectiity (2Mbps download and 2Mbps upload) to the students, and also proides an upgrade path to gie them Internet connectiity up to 50Mbps across the wired and wireless networks. 11
