Are you a wind farm operator, developer or project manager? Do you find organising telecommunications for SCADA systems to be a confusing or irritating affair? Are you frustrated at having to contact lots of different people without really knowing who is responsible for what? At Exa Networks these complications are a thing of the past - we provide a onestop shop with a personal account manager who will be with you from quotation to completion, ensuring that your SCADA telecommunications are installed to meet your full requirements on time. Exa Networks are one of the UK s leading specialist service providers for SCADA telecommunication solutions to the renewable energy sector. As a result, we understand the process which is specific to projects of this kind and the varying factors which must be considered when organising telecommunications for the site. We know that wind farms come in different sizes, can be built in challenging geographical locations, and may be some distance from any telephone network; we know that there is no one-size-fits-all product and we know that there are many questions to be answered before you even think about placing an order. For example, you may be wondering: How many phone lines do I actually need? What is the best broadband service to use? What are the bandwidth and uplink speed requirements of the wind farm? Will I be able to get broadband with a fast enough speed to meet all of the SCADA systems requirements? Can the status of the service be monitored in real-time to avoid uneccessary call-out costs?

At Exa Networks we have the answers to all these queries and any more you may have. So, why choose us? We will provide you with a dedicated project manager who will provide you with all the answers you need, when you need them, in a way that you understand. We will help you to decide how many telephone lines you will need to support SCADA system requirements at the wind farm, determined by the number of wind turbines and bandwidth requirement, additional monitoring and SCADA equipment. We will organise the installation of telephone lines at the wind farm site and be available to give you regular updates along the way. We will establish and inform you of the expected broadband and uplink speeds before the telephone lines are ordered, so that you know what to expect. We will provide you with IP addresses and login details long before any service is live so that SCADA equipment can be pre-configured in advance in order to prevent any delays. We can provide backup telecommunications, including G over a dedicated G network which has the largest and best coverage across the UK. We offer bonded ADSL (broadband); bonding multiple ADSL connections to increase uplink speeds and improve reliability in case of a line fault. We can deliver PDSL (Private ADSL) solutions for companies which require additional security. We can deliver fibre optic links to connect wind farms to corporate MPLS networks. We offer bundled packages designed to suit different sizes of wind farms making it easy for you to choose the right solution. We provide full support with a team of qualified and experienced personnel. We can provide you with a web based portal to securely access real-time information from your ADSL lines and help you to avoid unecessary call outs. We can notify you of potential ADSL line issues by sending you an before you realise that there is a problem. We deliver on time!

Typical SCADA Communication Solutions A standard solution, typical for small and medium sized wind farms, does not provide advanced features. Although many wind farms operate on a single broadband connection, this may not necessarily be exclusively for a single SCADA system. All wind farms operate multiple SCADA partners, each requiring secure access to its telemetry, and so it is common to provide independent connectivity to each SCADA system. For example: Wind Farm SCADA connectivity (turbine manufacturer) Operator SCADA connectivity (OPC DA/FTPS/IEC ) Utility SCADA connectivity (Switchgear HV) CCTV connectivity Office broadband connectivity This is not the most efficient method of delivering SCADA communication networks. This type of solution does not always have backup connectivity - this means that if there is a problem with one of the lines or connections someone has to drive to the wind farm to resolve it. In order to avoid this situation, some wind farms install a backup ADSL broadband connection to be used in case of a primary ADSL failure. However, this is not a fail-safe solution as when one ADSL broadband connection experiences a problem the other connections will usually experience the same difficulties. For example, if someone accidentally cuts through a phone line it is likely that all phone lines to the site will be damaged as they all take the same path to the exchange. It can also be problematic in terms of repairs if someone visits the site to resolve a network problem, it is not uncommon for the wrong cable to be plugged into the wrong router. There is also a risk that a working network with no problems can be disconnected by mistake. This is why a backup ADSL connection is not a resolute alternative to a primary ADSL connection. Exa Networks SCADA Communication Solutions The Exa Networks standard solution ensures that connectivity is available to all partners at the wind farm, even if separate broadband connections are required to serve each individual SCADA system. However, if multiple connections are required, we recommend that wind farms choose one of Exa s Advanced Solutions rather than a basic one as these include advanced features and benefits and will also provide higher uplink speeds. IP connectivity and uplink speed requirements at a wind farm is determined by the individual bandwidth needs and the number of turbines present at each wind farm. These requirements are represented in the form of a Basic Solution or Advanced Solution. 4

Basic Solution The basic solution can be the most cost effective but does not include any of the advanced features such as: Web Portal; for real-time access to ADSL line information Backup connectivity notification This type of solution delivers a single broadband connection to the wind farm to provide access to a single SCADA system. However, should the line or service fail, network access to the wind farm will then become unavailable and there will be no way to connect until the service becomes available again. With this solution there are no means by which to monitor the connection and inform the customer of any network failure to the wind farm. However although this solution does not include any of the advanced features, it still provides excellent connectivity including reliability, stability, and data throughput with uplink speeds from 56Kbps up to.mbps (dependant on the phone line signal quality). Advanced Solution Each of Exa s advanced solutions include high speed uplinks by utilising ADSL+ connections (where available), or by bonding multiple ADSL connections together to increase the uplink speed. By taking advantage of Exa s G network, in addition to the ADSL connections, the wind farm will benefit from the ultra-reliable backup service that Exa Networks offers. In the unlikely event that the primary ADSL connection fails or experiences a problem, connectivity will automatically switch over to G until the ADSL connection comes back online, at which point connectivity will automatically switch back from the G connection to the primary ADSL connection. There is no requirement for anyone to reconfigure any equipment in the event of a network failure, as the G connection will use the same IP address range as the primary connection. As well as a reliable backup service, advanced solutions also provide user access to a dedicated web portal where real-time ADSL line information can be obtained to determine if specific lines are operating correctly at the wind farm. Exa Networks will also be available to assist where line faults occur. If an ADSL connection experiences difficulties, an is automatically sent to notify the user(s) to alert them of the problem. The user can then login to the Portal and identify in real-time which line is experiencing problems as well as identifying if it is a SCADA problem or a broadband problem without the time and expense of sending an engineer to the site. Some key features and benefits of the advanced solution: Automatic fail-over to backup connection Automatic fail-back to primary connection when it comes back online G service with primary IP address porting Bonded ADSL service to guarantee the minimum uplink speed Allocation of a range of IP addresses to be used for specific services rather than just a single line QoS (Quality of Service) to prioritise upstream traffic so that important data traffic always has priority over less important traffic Web Portal to view real-time information of each ADSL line so that access to network information is quick, saving unnecessary time lost by having to send an engineer out onsite notification in the event of an ADSL network issue. s can be sent to multiple personnel immediately after the alarm is raised 5

SCADA Solutions Wind farms come in various configurations and sizes. Built in remote regions, it can be notoriously difficult to deliver the appropriate telecommunications systems with enough bandwidth and uplink speed required to transmit telemetry. Below are examples of typical solutions that Exa Networks currently deliver to the Wind Farm Industry: Diagram. (Small Wind Farms) Basic Solution This diagram demonstrates a typical basic solution at a small wind farm with a configuration of between one and five turbines. It is not uncommon for wind farms of this size to have between one and four broadband lines to enable communications to individual SCADA systems. Each broadband connection has its own broadband router and a public IP address so that secure VPN connections can be established. /ŶƚĞƌŶĞƚ ^ǁŝƚĐŚŐĞĂƌ,ŝŐŚ sžůƚăőğ EK ^ ^ĞƉĂƌĂƚĞ ^> ŽŶŶĞĐƚŝŽŶƐ ĨŽƌ ĞĂĐŚ ^ ƐLJƐƚĞŵ,s dƶƌďŝŷğ DĂŶƵĨĂĐƚƵƌĞƌ /ŶĚŝǀŝĚƵĂů ƌžăěďăŷě ƌžƶƚğƌɛ tŝŷě &Ăƌŵ ^ ^ ZŽƵƚĞƌ ϭ ^ ZŽƵƚĞƌ Ϯ KW &dw^ / ϲϭϰϭϭͳϯϱ KƉĞƌĂƚŽƌ ^ŝƚğ KĨĨŝĐĞ ^ ZŽƵƚĞƌ ϯ

Diagram. (Small to Medium Sized Wind Farms) Advanced Solution This diagram demonstrates a typical advanced solution for wind farms with up to 0 wind turbines where the available upload speed is at least 56Kbps per ADSL line. By bonding two ADSL connections together, a minimum uplink speed of 5Kbps is guaranteed this is the normal requirement for wind farms of this size. A maximum of three ADSL connections can be bonded together to provide a minimum uplink speed of 768Kbps. A managed Cisco router and switch not only provides the highest levels of performance and reliability but also additional benefits and features such as automatic fail-over and fail-back. With this solution, a G backup service is also included to provide resiliency in the event of a primary connection failure. The customer also benefits from the added features of web portal tools for obtaining ADSL line information in real-time, and notification in the event that a network alarm is triggered. As many as seven SCADA systems within the wind farm can be connected using this type of solution. However, this diagram demonstrates the normal configuration of the four traditional SCADA systems. A range of 8 or 6 public IP addresses is also assigned to the router so that each SCADA has its own public IP address. 8 Diagram. (Large Wind Farms) Large wind farms normally consist of + turbines. This configuration of wind farm usually produces much higher levels of data and telemetry connectivity and therefore has a greater demand on bandwidth requirements. Although it is not uncommon for a wind farm on this scale to require an uplink speed of Mbps, in most cases the minimum uplink speed requirement is Mbps. Whereas it is common to install a fibre optic link in order to deliver the required uplink speed for a large wind farm, the required uplink speed can also be achieved by bonding three ADSL connections, where each phone line supports faster broadband with enough bandwidth to allow for this amount of data. Diagram. demonstrates the bonding of three ADSL connections to deliver a minimum guaranteed uplink speed of 768Kbps. In most cases the uplink speed will be more than Mbps where phone lines support faster line speeds. 9 Diagram 4. (Corporate Networks) Some wind farms, including those owned by international operators, have a preference or legal requirement to keep data completely secure, this is achieved by ensuring that all IP connections are not connected to the public domain or Internet. Diagram 4. demonstrates how Exa Networks can design, engineer, and deliver solutions for corporate MPLS networks, and even deliver fully managed MPLS networks where required. Exa Networks can even deliver solutions to wind farms on mainland Europe. tŝŷě &Ăƌŵ ϭ ^ ZŽƵƚĞƌ ^ĞĐƵƌĞ ϯ' ĂĐŬƵƉ /ŶƚŽ DW>^ ^> ŽŶĚŝŶŐ ZŽƵƚĞƌ ϯ' KƉĞƌĂƚŽƌ ,Y &ŝďƌğ KƉƚŝĐ >ŝŷŭ ϯ' tŝŷě &Ăƌŵ Ϯ dğůğɖśžŷğ >ŝŷğɛ ŶĚ ŽŶĚĞĚ W ^> ƌžăěďăŷě ^ĞƌǀŝĐĞ ^ ZŽƵƚĞƌ ŽƌƉŽƌĂƚĞ DW>^ EĞƚǁŽƌŬ ^ĞĐƵƌĞ ϯ' ĂĐŬƵƉ /ŶƚŽ DW>^ tŝŷě &Ăƌŵ ϰ ϯ' ^ ZŽƵƚĞƌ dğůğɖśžŷğ >ŝŷğ tŝƚś W ^> ĐŽŶŶĞĐƚŝŽŶ &ŝďƌğ KƉƚŝĐ >ŝŷŭɛ tŝŷě &Ăƌŵ ϯ ^ ZŽƵƚĞƌ 9

SCADA Telecommunications Packages Our Service Requirement Matrix shows which of Exa Network s telecommunications packages are suitable for each type of wind farm. By looking at the size of the wind farm you should be able to determine which package you should choose to fulfil the requirements.
