People. In times of accelerating technological progress some organizations seem to forget the basis of innovation: ideas are being created by people for people." Michael Ireland, President of the Columbia Leadership Group 5

Innovation-driven growth. In times of rapid change innovating at a high pace is more vital to organizations than ever before. What Peter Drucker had already called the age of discontinuity in the 70s is picked up in research by Richard Foster today. Foster argues that by the end of 2020, the average lifetime of a corporation on the S&P will have shortened to about ten years, as fewer and fewer companies fall into the category of survivors. Among the survivors will be those companies that are seeking to drive growth by innovating and reinventing themselves on a constant basis. This innovation-driven growth can be traced back to four fundamental building blocks: the development of new and profitable products and services, the generation of business models and process innovation, an anti-fragile structure that improves under pressure and a culture of high performance and innovation that attracts talent. Outside In Business Models Progressive business models and processes Product Innovation Profitable new products and services Exploitation Innovative Brand A talent attracting brand and culture of innovation Exploration Anti-fragile Structure Highly adaptive & resilient organizational structures Inside Out Successful innovators balance exploration and exploitation strategies while at the same time making sure they work outside in as well as inside out. 6

The bigger picture approach to innovation. MARKETS Volatile markets and complex challenges Constantly changing global market environments CULTURE Culture of innovation and high performance Continuous ideation and proactive execution STRATEGY LEADERSHIP Dynamic strategies Outside in knowledge aligned with priorities and incentives Adaptive Leadership Ambidextrous mindset putting people at the center Missed opportunities Many companies adapt to changes in their business environment, but not fast enough. Unused potential Too many organizations fight complexity instead of leveraging their people potential. Learning beats planning Organizations create an illusion of control rather than managing uncertainty effectively. To take organizations to the next level we align innovation strategies with leadership capabilities while embedding them in a high performance culture. 8
