Career Opportunities in Graphic Design There is a broad spectrum of career opportunities in graphic design. Your team is responsible for teaching us about them! Here s how you can get started: (1) Use the Internet to search for different types of careers in graphic design (hint: use Google and search for careers in graphic design or careers in visual arts. ). Find at least five actual job titles relating to graphic design. For each job, find out the following: - Nature of the work - Training/Education requirements - Career Opportunities - Salary (2) Now, take a look at real world graphic design careers. Using online newspaper classified ads, search for companies that are looking for someone in the graphic design field. Find at least one career from the following areas: - Mississippi - A state of your choice (each team member will choose a state) For each newspaper ad, tell us the job description and qualifications. (3) After you have a better understanding of what graphic designers do, think about any personal experiences you (or your family) has with the field of graphic design. Do you know anyone who works in graphic design? Do you know anyone going to college and majoring in graphic design? Why are you interested in graphic design? What career would you be most interested? Each member of your group should answer at least one of these questions. (4) Now it s time to create your team s PowerPoint presentation on this topic! You should create a slide for the following: - A title slide (include group members) - A slide for each career in graphic design (You should have 5 careers, so you will have 5 slides.) - A slide for each newspaper ad (You should have 4-5 ads, so you will have 4-5 slides.) - A slide for each team member s reflection on the field of graphic design. (If you have 4 team members, you will have 4 slides.) - Audience questions
(6) Your group should be prepared to give a 7-10 minute presentation on your topic. At the conclusion of your presentation, you should have 3 questions prepared to ask your audience (to make sure they listened and understand the information you gave them!). Also include each question on a different slide in your presentation. Once you are finished with the PowerPoint, you should have at least 16 slides! Education & Training in Graphic Design Depending on your long-term career goals, there are many training and educational options available to you in graphic design. Your team is responsible for teaching us about them! Here s how you can get started: (1) Use the Internet to search for education and training requirements for careers in graphic design (hint: use Google and search for education requirements for graphic design careers. ). One educational option in graphic design is taking this class! Using the Internet, find the following: - 1 other Career & Technical Center in Mississippi that offers Computer Graphics - 1 other high school in the United States who offers a 2-year program similar to ours (in Computer Graphics Technology, or a related field) For each of these programs, tell us where these programs are located and give a brief description of topics covered. (2) Another educational option for you in graphic design is a 2-year technical program (after high school). Most of these programs are found at a community college (such as Hinds Community College) or an accredited art institute, such as Virginia College. Using the Internet, find the following: - 1 2-year program in Mississippi (from a community college or art institute) - 1 2-year program in the United States For each of these programs, tell us the name of the program and give a brief description of topics covered. (3) One educational option in graphic design is obtaining a 4-year degree from a college (also called a Bachelor s degree). Using the Internet, find colleges that offer a Bachelor s Degree in Graphic Design (or related field). Use the following as a guide: - Find 2 colleges in Mississippi - Find 1 other college in the United States (Your team will choose the college) - An Ivy League school that offers a graphic design program For each of these programs, tell us what/where the program is and give a brief description of topics covered. (4) While we have been discussing a lot about Graphic Design, there are other specialized programs that are related to computer graphics & design. These may include animation technology or gaming technology (where you create video games). Research
more specialized fields of graphic design and give us a list of at least 3 and provide a brief description for each. (5) Now it s time to create your team s PowerPoint presentation on this topic! You should create a slide for the following and provide us with the information you discovered: - A title slide (include group members) - A slide telling us the 3 educational options in graphic design - A slide for the 2 high school Computer Graphics programs your team found - A slide for each 2-year Graphic Design program your team researched (and its description) - A slide for each Bachelor s program your team researched (and its description) - A slide describing more specialized options in Graphic Design - A slide for each specialized program you researched (and its description) - Audience questions Once you are finished with the PowerPoint, you should have at least 17 slides! (6) Your group should be prepared to give a 7-10 minute presentation on your topic. History of Graphic Design & Emerging Technologies What is the history of graphic design? How did it begin anyway? What are some advancements that have been made in the field? Your team is responsible for teaching us about this! Here s how you can get started: (1) Use the Internet to search for how graphic design has evolved over time (hint: Use Google and search for history of graphic design or graphic design timeline. ). Choose ten meaningful events to research further. For each event, tell me at least two facts. For example, in 1816, the first sans-serif font was used in a book. Well, what is a sans-serif font? This is a fact you would want to include on your PowerPoint slide. Don t just give us a fact, but explain it to us! (2) Now, use the Internet to research tools for graphic design. What types of computers are recommended when designing? What about computer software (programs)? Any recommended textbooks? Any other tools that could be useful? Find information on each of these tools to include in your PowerPoint presentation. You should have at least 8 slides of information on this topic. (3) Now it s time to create your team s PowerPoint presentation on this topic! You should create a slide for the following and provide us with the information you discovered: - A title slide (include group members) - A slide for each timeline event - A slide for each tool you researched in graphic design - Audience questions Once you are finished with the PowerPoint, you should have at least 22 slides! (4) Your group should be prepared to give a 7-10 minute presentation on your topic. At the conclusion of your presentation, you should have 3 questions prepared to ask your audience (to make sure they listened and understand the information you gave them!).
