1 11 th Grade Workshop R U Ready : Career and College Planning lesson for 11 th Graders Purpose: This lesson is designed to get junior year students thinking about the options that exist for them after high school. It also addresses the steps that students would need to take to obtain their desired post high school goal. The lesson addresses SAT/ACT testing and college searches. Certifications, licensures and resume writing will be addressed for those students seeking entrance into the job force. The lesson will also address the RU Ready magazine that needs to be handed out to all juniors. Objectives: Students will be able to Access career planning websites to determine the post high school education they need to pursue a chosen career path. Access college websites (if college bound) in order to identify possibly target, reach and safety schools as well as entrance requirements and majors offered. Identify the different post high options that exist to them. Begin thinking of important aspects/deadlines of senior year and developing a timeline to meet their desired goal SOLS: HC2. Understand how changing economic and societal needs influence employment trends and future training HC8. Demonstrate skills involved in locating, using, and interpreting a variety of career and educational resources, including the Internet HA2. Understand the variety of post-secondary options available to them and the requirements of those options including the relationship of academic status and scholastic record. Materials: PowerPoint presentation Internet access for each student Career planning worksheet (1 per student) Transcripts of each student RU Ready magazine ( 1 per student) Do now worksheet (1 per student) Procedure: 1. Students will complete the Do Now. After a few minutes the counselors will review the answers with the students. 2. Counselors hand out the R U Ready magazine and explain its purpose. Counselors will discuss the to do list and give each junior a copy of their transcript, noting that their to-do list depends on what they plan to do after high school. 3. Students will then follow the directions on the PowerPoint slide in order to access the career planning website, VACRN. 4. At this time, students will fill out the worksheet related to the VACRN website.
2 5. If students are college bound they should explore after filling out their worksheet. At the end of the lesson students should turn in their career planning worksheet and evidence of their college search (printed off the computer). Differentiation: The activities of the students will depend on the post high plans of the student. If they are planning to attend a 2 or 4 year school they will explore collegeboard.com or Virginiamentor.org. If they are planning to join the workforce after high school they only will complete the worksheet and continue to explore career websites. Evaluation/Extension: This information will be addressed again in more detail in the senior workshop in the fall of senior year. Also, counselors will have either a worksheet or college search printout for each student.
