KET Biotechnology in Horizon 2020 Biotechnology-based industrial processes driving competitiveness and sustainability Cutting-edge biotechnologies as future innovation drivers Innovative and competitive platform technologies Plus, foresight and open engagement with policy makers and the general public

KET Biotechnology in the Work Programme 2016-2017 Bridging the gap from lab to market New approaches to valorise new feedstock resources Increasing overall efficiencies (pushing technology concepts beyond current boundaries) Speeding up innovation New bioprocess concepts New production techniques Improved data integration and valorisation New technological platforms related to bio-catalysis and bio-design

KET Biotechnology Call 2016 ERA-NET Cofund on Biotechnologies (ERA-Net) Bioconversion of non-agricultural waste into biomolecules for industrial applications (RIA) Microbial chassis platforms with optimized metabolic pathways for industrial innovations through systems biology (RIA) KET Biotechnology foresight identifying gaps and highvalue opportunities for the EU industry (CSA) Dedicated support to biotechnology SMEs closing the gap from lab to market

BIOTEC-01- ERA-NET Cofund on Biotechnologies Objective: Maintain the global leadership of Europe in biotechnology Broader and deeper collaboration among relevant sectors + Member States Scope: Implementation of a joint transnational call for proposals (grants to third parties) with EU co-funding ( 8-10 M) Integration of past ERA-IB2, ERASysAPP, ERASynBio (FP7) Significant involvement of industry up to exploitation of results Impact: Alignment of EU and national biotechnology initiatives with KET Biotechnology in H2020, i.e. application-oriented research Improved synergies and coherence of research funding, plus increased financial commitments of countries and private sector resources

BIOTEC-02- Bioconversion of nonagricultural waste. Objective: Improving industrial resource efficiency, creating viable links between waste generation and utilization Scope: Converting municipal solid bio-waste fractions, sludgy bio-waste from other industries and from water treatment facilities into high value-added bio-based products Proof of feasibility of integration into existing value chains and economic viability and strong industry drive EU contribution: 5-7 million Impact: At least 2 new bio-based value chains Potential impact in terms of EU jobs and growth

BIOTEC-03- Microbial chassis platforms through systems biology Objective: To boost the design of novel and more efficient microbial platforms for the production of industrial compounds Scope: Improving cell factories or creating new ones with beneficial traits for industr or with enhanced properties for harsh process conditions in industry, for high performing manufacturing processes or for the industrial production of novel high-value products, EU contribution: 5-7 million Impact: At least 2 new high-value added products Substantial opportunities for SME to uptake innovative research

BIOTEC-04- KET Biotechnology foresight. for the EU industry Objective: To maintain EU leadership in biotechnology Scope: Potential of EU industry to deliver high-value added products while satisfying evolving consumer needs, identifying new commercial opportunities as well as possible risks for people s health and the environment Links with policy development and programmes beyond H2020, plus complementarities with Societal Challenges EU contribution: 350K-500K (1 year) Impact: A reliable priority-setting scenario for funding industrial biotech Knowledge about capacities and needs to strengthen Europe-wide R&D&I cooperation, in particular boosting the participation of smaller countries
