We lay the ground work at the preconference, Thursday, September 17, 2015, with some ADHD coaching. Susan Eiley will begin the conference by educating healthcare professionals on how to assist clients with ADHD in maintaining focus and planning their time effectively. This workshop is followed by the President s Reception and networking event. After all, effective use of self is not just about attending informational workshops, but also about sharing with other like-minded professionals and learning about the practices of our colleagues in the field all while having delightful canapés and maybe a glass of wine, if you re so inclined. The two main presentations are full-day sessions, Friday September 18, 2015. Dr. Les Greenberg will present on the use of Emotion Focused Therapy for specific disorders. Dr. Greenberg is one of the founders of the EFT approach and has written a number of articles and books. Having seen Dr. Greenberg present, we are sure to be in for a treat. Check out his website: www.emotionfocusedclinic.org for more information on his clinic, training and many publications. Concurrent with Dr. Greenberg, Dr. Jim Hopper will present on key brain circuitries that determine how people respond to, encode and recall traumatic experiences, and how clinical and contemplative methods can harness key brain circuitries for healing and spiritual transformation. As a researcher and clinician, Dr. Hopper s work spans and interweaves neuroscience, trauma, and contemplative practices. He teaches and consults with therapists, investigators, prosecutors, judges, victim advocates, and military commanders. For more information about him, see www.jimhopper.com. We also have four half-day workshop taking place alongside our main speakers. In the morning our own Shelley Pomerantz, will be presenting on the therapeutic use of stuck spots those times when you seem to reach an impasse in therapy and Bill Gayner who will present on the integration of mindfulness in psychotherapy. In the afternoon, we have a return speaker, Dr. David Teplin who is always a delightful and informative speaker. His topic this year is on the relationship between ADHD and substance abuse. Gord Hope will be presenting the work of Dr. Alvin Mahrer and his form of Experiential Psychotherapy. Saturday morning Natasha Sharma starts us off with some practical advice on using modern media to promote your private practice. Following this, Rob Talach of Beckett Personal Injury Lawyers will talk to us about ways of helping clients obtain the funds for needed services. He will talk about the Ontario Criminal Injuries Compensation Board as well as litigation and class action suits, which can provide a therapeutic function as well as getting therapeutic services covered by those responsible for the suffering. In addition to our excellent presenters, I d also like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors: McFarlan Rowlands Insurance Brokers, Dalton Associates, Beckett Personal Injury Lawyers, Homewood Health and GoodLife Fitness who has provided us with a free membership to their gym for three months, plus a gym bag to give a way as a door prize at the AGM. OACCPP s 37 th Annual Conference & AGM Presenter s Bio & Workshop Descriptions Susan Eiley, M.Ed Susan Eiley is an Executive Function and ADHD Coach at knowadhd in Toronto where she collaborates with young adults and adults to identify and achieve their professional and personal goals. Prior to her training in the core competencies of ADHD coaching, Susan worked for over ten years using different therapeutic modalities as well as Adult Learning Theory and Principles in her counselling practice with adults. Drawing on her training in narrative and cognitive behavioural therapies as well as her graduate degree in Adult Learning, she also worked on a multidisciplinary team for eight years developing and delivering group programs and individualized lifestyle and behavioural treatment to address executive function deficits in individuals with complex weight management difficulties. Workshop Collaborating with Adults - ADHD Coaching Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is well known when it applies to children. But what does it look like in adults? Adults with ADHD can often present with low self-esteem, long standing regrets and repeated setbacks both professionally and interpersonally. Learn about the nature of ADHD and its different presentations. What is often attributed to psychological issues is actually a matter of compromised executive function- the central deficit in ADHD. In this presentation you will discover how the inability to self regulate, maintain focus and manage frustrations impacts on the psychotherapeutic relationship and your client s outcome. Using a strength based, goal driven, collaborative model, learn how ADHD coaching can empower clients to better understand themselves and their ADHD brain. This model provides a scaffold for clients to discover strategies, systems and resources that support and strengthen abilities while bypassing the white noise that so often accompanies ADHD. While ADHD Coaching is not a substitute for therapy, the process can invite concrete change, greater self awareness and increased competence within an executive functions framework. Bill Gayner, BSW, MSW, RSW Bill Gayner, BSW, MSW, RSW, is a Mental Health Clinician in Psychiatry at Mount Sinai Hospital, where he provides and researches mindfulness groups for psychiatry outpatients, people living with HIV, and hospital staff, as well as integrates mindfulness into individual psychotherapy with people living with HIV. He teaches Mindful Psychotherapy through the Mount Sinai Psychotherapy Institute and the Health, Arts and Humanities Program at U of T, and is an Adjunct Lecturer in the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, U of T. Workshop Psychotherapy & Mindfulness Mindfulness can be more than focusing attention on neutral or pleasant objects such as the breath in order to calm down. It can be a way of coaching clients to transform their relationship with experience, helping them cultivate gentleness, curiosity and openness towards their feelings, thoughts and whatever mind state emerges. Emotion-Focused Mindfulness emerged out a search for providing more coherent ways of helping clients suffering from difficult emotions and thoughts associated with internalized stigma to develop self-compassionate awareness through mindfulness and live more deeply valued lives. Workshop participants will learn how an Emotion-Focused orientation to mindfulness can help therapists integrate mindfulness into their clinical practice using common therapy factors such as empathy, positive regard and congruence, regardless of the therapy modality in which they are most deeply embedded. They will be introduced to, experience, journal and discuss an experientially open, emotionally friendly approach to meditation called Recollective Awareness, developed by the Buddhist teacher, Jason Siff, author of Unlearning Meditation, What to Do When the Instructions Get in the Way and Thoughts Are Not the Enemy: an Innovative Approach to Meditation Practice. The workshop will be of interest to both experienced and beginner meditators. Participants are asked to bring either a notebook and pen or a smart phone in order to journal their practice.

Gord Hope, Ph.D., OACCPP Gord Hope (PhD) has been practising Psychotherapy for the better part of a quarter century, beginning in Ottawa in 1990, then moving to Brantford, and now working out of Waterloo. From 2009 through 2014 he was also on Staff as a Psychotherapist at the Shalem Mental Health Network, in Hamilton. Hope obtained his MA in Clinical Psychology from the University of Ottawa, and his Ph.D. in Social Psychology / Criminal Behaviour from Carleton. He then returned to U of O to acquire a Post-Doctoral diploma in Professional Psychology under Dr. Alvin Mahrer, updating his abilities for Mahrer s approach to Experiential Psychotherapy. He also works with small businesses and organizations to assist them with development and improvement endeavours, and he facilitates workshops on Antibullying, on Cap-ability trumps Dis-ability, and the Changing Minds Changing Lives presentation of the Canadian Paralympic Committee, among others. Workshop Mahrerian Experiential Therapy: The Psychotherapy from Mars? Mahrerian Experiential Therapy, authored and formulated by Dr. Alvin R. Mahrer, is an unique approach to Psychotherapy that is not governed by disorder assessments and labels, by body language, facial expressions and other visual cues, or by the clock. It is a highly clientcentred approach, which has the Client and the Therapist positioned such that they are side by side, separated by a small table, and facing the same direction, both with their eyes closed. From this orientation they form an "Experiential" alignment focused on emotional and physical experiences, and without visual distractions. All data comes from the Client's emotional and physical experiences, and what they cause as experiences in the Therapist, with these being reflected by the Therapist back to the Client. Through this half-day workshop, participants will: Learn the six steps of a Mahrerian Experiential session Learn and discuss the concept of data in Psychotherapy, and how it is used in a Mahrerian session Learn and discuss the concepts of Method and Technique in Mahrerian Experiential Therapy, and in Psychotherapy in general Role-play to practice affecting an "experiential" alignment Role-play in the context of some or all of the six steps of a Mahrerian session Discuss how the methods and techniques can be employed in other approaches to Psychotherapy. Jim Hopper, Ph.D., Dr. James Hopper is an independent consultant and part-time Instructor of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry of Harvard Medical School. For 25 years Dr. Hopper has focused on the psychological and biological effects of child abuse, sexual assault and other traumatic experiences. He has conducted research on various aspects of child abuse and sexual assault, including the neurobiology of trauma, the nature of traumatic memories and unique effects of sexual abuse on males. As a clinician Dr. Hopper works with adults who have experienced abuse as children and assault as adults. In his forensic work Dr. Hopper testifies on short- and long-term impacts of child abuse and sexual assault. He teaches and consults with therapists, investigators, prosecutors, judges, victim advocates, and military commanders. Workshop Trauma and the Brain: Acute Impacts, Potential Long-term Effects, and Pathways to Healing and Happiness Traumatic experiences have immediate, powerful and potentially long-lasting effects on the human brain. Understanding those brain effects can enhance clinicians abilities to engage with traumatized clients, including those who seek justice via the legal system, in ways that promote healing, well-being and genuine happiness. Participants will learn about key brain circuitries involved in trauma, fear, and cycles of suffering and healing including the prefrontal cortex and the circuitries of fear, memory, embodiment, seeking and satisfaction. They will gain greater understanding of brain-based responses and memory characteristics that are, unfortunately, still commonly misunderstood by many who work with victims of child abuse and assault; and of how various therapeutic approaches and contemplative practices can harness key brain circuitries for psychological healing and spiritual transformation.

In addition, Shelley has extensive experience in the Canadian media as a relationship, parenting and family expert. She has appeared on Cityline, Real Life, CFRB Radio, Canada AM, Global TV and Chatelaine TV. Currently, Shelley provides therapeutic counseling for adolescents, families, couples and people who struggle with addiction, anxiety and depression. Shelley has developed a unique therapeutic approach which supports people to embrace their stuck spots and heal the fear and shame that blocks the growth of healthy adult vulnerability. Workshop, M.Sc., OACCPP The Healing Potential of the Emotional Stuck Spots Shelley Pomerantz, a psychotherapist for almost thirty-five years and co- author of Everything Your Mother Never Told You About Love, Sex, And Power has developed a unique approach that identifies and addresses the difficult emotional states and the subsequent emotional strategies that we develop to protect ourselves from the pain of relationship. These stuck spots limit our capacity for healthy change and paradoxically perpetuate the pain in ourselves and our relationships. This half-day workshop will help therapists in identifying the most challenging of these emotional states and strategies and guide them in how to effectively extract their presence from the client narrative. The workshop will also focus on how clinicians can develop themselves and effectively use the therapeutic relationship in the process of addressing the 'stuck spots' and how to hold the space for their client s ultimate healing. Today, sexual abuse claims represent the majority of his caseload. Some of his noteworthy results for victims of sexual abuse include the largest Canadian settlement for a victim of sexual abuse ($1.75 million) and in K.M.M. v. The Roman Catholic Diocese of London, the largest trial award for a female victim of sexual abuse by clergy ($610,000).
