Ferry Shipping Conference 08 New Ship concepts and projects Onboard M/S Color Magic April 16-17 2008. In 2007 Color Line reorganized into the following structure: Color Line A/S Providing common services to the group. 100 % owner of daughters. Oslo Color Line Cruises A/S Color Line Transport A/S Color Crew A/S Color Line Marine A/S 3 vessels 4 vessels Providing crew ISM / Marine management

The reorganization was motivated by our business focusing into 2 different segments of our industry: Quality cruise and effective transport The ship concepts found in Color Magic and SuperSpeed 1 clearly identifies with each of the different segments. Our Vision: We aim to become Europe's best shipping company within cruise and transport.

Ferry Shipping Conference 08 New Ship concepts and projects Onboard M/S Color Magic April 16-17 2008. M/S Color Fantasy. Built by Aker Yards, Finland. Delivered Dec 2004. Concept developed in extensive cooperation with Aker Yards through 2002 and after a market survey culminating with Color Line wanting to make something radically new and outstanding in our market. We wanted to attract additional passenger segments and we needed to lift the service level and vessel itself towards a cruise experience in order to do so. A presentation of M/S Color Magic. Worlds largest cruise ship with a car deck!

Ferry Shipping Conference 08 New Ship concepts and projects Onboard M/S Color Magic April 16-17 2008. The Color Magic was contracted after 5 months of successful operation of the Color Fantasy. The vessel was well received by the market and this provided the necessary platform to order a sister vessel Only a few alterations were made. These are: Cabins: 90 additional cabins including 36 additional mini suites (Magic Class) and 20 suites (Magic Suites Dk 9 forward MFZ) Deck 5: Combined car deck and exhibition center replaced with cabins for pax and crew, crew day rooms, and a new logistics center. Public areas: Slightly expanded areas of the Observation Lounge deck 15, and a larger Spa & Fitness center deck 13. Conference area slightly altered. Max auditorium capacity increased from 278 till 338 seats.(+60). Max passenger counts remains same, Lane meter capacity remains same, but car carrying capacity reduced due to loss of garage space on deck 5. A presentation of M/S Color Magic.

Main Dining Room is located on the stern (deck 6) just above the propellers and with a large open void (car decks, deck 3-4) in between. This is of course a challenge for the shipbuilders from a noise and vibration point of view. The vessel has a conventional diesel-mechanic propulsion system and the specification calls for DnV s Comfort class # 1 for passenger ships. Special measures have been taken by Aker Yards in cooperation with DnV s noise & vibration specialists and I believe that by know (dinner last night?) you will have experienced that even at high speed you can have a very comfortable dining experience in a very elegant dining room at a prime location. Ferry Shipping Conference 08 New Ship concepts and projects Onboard M/S Color Magic April 16-17 2008. Background (2005-2006): 4 vessels were working the Kristiansand Hirtshals and the Larvik - Hirtshals routes in a mix of day and overnight crossings varying with the seasons. Additional capacity needed. Especially for trucks but also for cars in the summer season. Kristiansand (NO) Hirtshals (DK) M/S Christian IV (for sale) A decision to build 2 larger day-pax vessels to cover for the expected market needs were made. Ferry Shipping Conference 08 New Ship concepts and projects Background: In light of market developments requiring frequent departures and short crossing times in comfort a new concept was sought. Onboard M/S Color Magic April 16-17 2008. M/S SuperSpeed 1 Solution: Short turnaround times, higher vessel speeds eliminating the need for cabin (overnight) accommodation, larger shopping areas and larger ro/ro capacities as well as a lower aggregated need for crew was specified. M/S SuperSpeed 2 Contract: A contract to build 1 large day-pax vessels for each of the 2 crossings were signed with Aker Yards in December 2005.

Ferry Shipping Conference 08 New Ship concepts and projects Onboard M/S Color Magic April 16-17 2008. Capacity of each vessel: The new vessels are larger and with a substantially larger carrying capacity compared to the vessels they replace. For some categories of cargo the new vessels have a combined carrying capacity larger than that combined for both vessel s being replaced on each itinerary. Capacity (Vessel each departure.) Ferry Shipping Conference 08 New Ship concepts and projects Onboard M/S Color Magic April 16-17 2008. Superspeeds 1 Special construction issues to be noted: Class Notations: Comf-V(2), (Comfort Class 2.) The vessel achieved very good noise & vibration results on sea trial measurements. Only 1-3 measurement points were actually above comfort class 1 (Comf-V(1)) requirements, and we intend to do minor local adjustments and measure again in order to achieve class 1 approval of the vessels. We believe we might become the first ro/pax vessel with this class notation. (Otherwise common for cruise ships.) DnV Noise & Vibration study: Anti phase propeller excitation (100% MCR) Forced response at 9.8 HZ A presentation of M/S SuperSpeed 1.

Ferry Shipping Conference 08 New Ship concepts and projects Class Notations: Onboard M/S Color Magic April 16-17 2008. Superspeeds 1 Special construction issues to be noted: CLEAN, This is more of an operational requirement than a construction requirement, but it should be noted that the vessels are far better than the replaced vessels as to environmental compliance and operations. VIBR, This ensures low vibration (free?) levels for machinery and technical components. We believe SuperSpeed 1 is among the first ro/pax vessels to achieve this notation which should ensure smooth operation of rotating machinery onboard for the future. SSC, (Subdivision and Survival Capabilities). This is class answer to SOLAS 2009 (MSC 194(80)). These new damage stability rules intend to replace SOLAS 90 and the Stockholm agreement conditions in place today and becomes mandatory for new buildings in 2009. A presentation of M/S SuperSpeed 1.

Ferry Shipping Conference 08 New Ship concepts and projects Onboard M/S Color Magic April 16-17 2008. Superspeeds 1 Special construction issues to be noted: Class Notations: SSC (continued), (Subdivision and Survival Capabilities). SuperSpeed 1 is first vessel to achieve this class, and this means that it fulfills both the existing rules today (SOLAS 90 + Stockholm agreement), and the future SOLAS 2009 requirements for damage stability. This notation was made possible under a special agreement with the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow who performed the calculations, Aker Yards, DnV, and Color Line. Note: In a similar agreement, the Color Magic is also constructed and prepared for a future SSC notation or SOLAS 2009 compliance if this ever becomes a retro effective requirement. A presentation of M/S SuperSpeed 1.

Ferry Shipping Conference 08 New Ship concepts and projects Superspeeds 1 Onboard M/S Color Magic April 16-17 2008. Special construction issues to be noted: Hydrodynamic resistance. Propulsion efficiency. Sea keeping. When Aker Yards was pinpointed as the yard of choice extensive testing was initiated to improve the hydrodynamics of the vessel. As we know Aker Yards built some of the Superfast designs (III + IV) in the 1990 s so a good base for comparing was readily available. Extensive model tank testing (MARIN, Holland) and design adjustments to the hull / propulsion interface / appendixes was made under a special agreement between the 2 parties and Color Line in order to achieve better propulsion efficiency, sea keeping characteristics, and hull resistance. A presentation of M/S SuperSpeed 1.

Ferry Shipping Conference 08 New Ship concepts and projects Onboard M/S Color Magic April 16-17 2008. Superspeeds 1 Special construction issues to be noted: Hydrodynamic resistance. Propulsion efficiency. Sea keeping. (continued) Results: The extremely good sea keeping characteristics proved themselves during January sea-trials in a Baltic Sea storm. An incredible 7 % (and in some conditions 9 %) improvement in resistance was achieved compared to the older designs for comparable speed/power and draught (=cargo) values. This is good not only for the vessel s fuel expenses, it will pay back the extra project costs many times with today's fuel prices, but it also gives the SuperSpeed design a considerably better CO2 footprint and CO2 index values (as recommended to be calculated by IMO) compared to some competing designs.
