FINNISH LANGUAGE GROUPS Courses The courses progress at a leisurely pace and offer information on Finnish society. They help participants to integrate, prepare you for more advanced studies in Finnish language and help you to maintain the already gained language skills. These courses are especially targeted for those outside the labor force, for example people recently moved to Finland, for senior citizens and stay-at-home parents with small children. If there are free places at the courses also others interested are welcome to attend. Getting familiar with letters and numbers, course A Monday and Wednesday 10.30 12.00 (7.9. 21.10.) This course is especially targeted for people who for the very first time start learning to read and write in the Latin alphabet system. Also you learn basic every day Finnish. Continuation from the basics Tuesday and Thursday 12.30 14.00 (8.9. 17.12.) Suitable for people who have studied Finnish around 50 hours and know the very basics. Basic knowledge of Finnish language is required. Child care is available during the course. Teacher is Natalia Lebedeva. In association with ViSiO. Other Finnish language courses and groups Finnish for stay-at-home parents, continuation from level A1.3 Tuesday and Thursday 12.30 14.00 (1.9. 17.12.) This course is for stay-at-home parents living in the city of Helsinki. It requires a level of A1.3. A language test for applicants is arranged on Friday 14.8. Stay-at-home parents with children aged 1-3 years are on priority. Child care is available during the course. The course is financed by City of Helsinki and will continue in spring 2016. Papupata conversation group Tuesday and Thursday 18.00 19.30 (11.8. 17.12.) The group is open for everyone who is interested and manages basics of Finnish language. The instructors are Red Cross volunteers. For more information about the meetings, contact papupata.kerho@gmail.com. No registration required, join at any time. Thursday conversation Thursday 10.00 11.30 (10.9. 10.12.) In this conversation group we discuss in plain Finnish about different topics that interest the participants. Familia provides coffee and tea. Directed by Ulla Ropponen and Päivi Lehtonen. Register at the Familia office on Wednesday 26.8. at 10.00 15.00. Let s speak Finnish conversation group Friday 10.00 11.30 (11.9. 11.12.) The group consists of maximum of 5 people who know the basics of Finnish language, and who will participate actively and regularly. The discussion topics come from interests of the participants. Participants aged over 55 will be given priority. Directed by Kaarina Koivuniemi. Register at the Familia office on Wednesday 26.8. at 10.00 15.00. First steps to reading Monday 14.15 15.00 (21.9. 14.12., cancelled on 19.10.) A short course for those who can speak in Finnish, but not read it. Teacher Irmeli Rantaniska. In association with ViSiO. Steps into Finnish Friday 11.00 14.15 (30.10. 4.12.) Extra practice for the skills of reading and writing. Also words and phrases for everyday life. Get to know Finnish culture by experiencing it yourself. Teacher is Irmeli Rantaniska. In association with ViSiO. Register at the Familia office from Wednesday 14.10. Saturday conversation Saturday 15.00 17.00 (5.9. 12.12.) The group is open for everyone who is interested and manages the basics of Finnish language. Directed by Raija Sipilä. No registration required, join any time. Basic Finnish for everyday life Sunday 15.00 17.00 (13.9. 29.11.) Group for those who can already speak a little Finnish. Not suitable for the very beginners. In this group we learn words and phrases for everyday life. Instructor is Satu Saarela. Register at the Familia office on Wednesday 26.8. at 10.00-15.00. DUO S ACTIVITIES FOR INTERCULTURAL FAMILIES Duo Family Meeting Thursday 10.00 12.00 (3.9., 1.10., 29.10., 26.11.) The Duo Family Meetings are for intercultural families, in which the partners were born in different countries. At the meetings, we chat in a relaxed atmosphere about the everyday life of intercultural families. There will be coffee and little snacks. Languages: Finnish and English. No registration required.

Duo Couple s Cafe Wednesday 17.00 19.30 (30.9., 28.10., 25.11.) Duo Couple s Café meetings are relaxed and informal get-togethers for young, intercultural couples without children. Come and chat, exchange thoughts and get to know new people. Languages: Finnish and English. No registration required. ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES Latvian-speaking baby-parent club Monday 9.30 11.30 (14.9. 14.12.) Latvian parent & baby group is an informal group where Latvian speaking parents and their babies (until 3 years old) can meet and socialize to strengthen their Latvian connection. We practice typical Latvian baby-parent activities like singing, playing plays and creating together some of the very first art works. More information and registration: meistere.kristine@gmail.com Multicultural crèche Monday and Wednesday 12.30 14.00 (7.9. 16.12.) Tuesday and Thursday 12.30 15.45 (8.9. 17.12.) The crèche is for children whose parents attend a Finnish course at Familia. The child minder speaks Finnish and English. The group is small and requires membership and registration in advance at the same time as the course registration.

Italian-speaking colour immersion for children Tuesday 10.00 11.00 (8.9., 13.10., 10.11., 8.12.) Children get to explore colours and different materials in Italian. More information and registration: antonellaperna@hotmail.com. Mother & baby group Monday 14.15 15.45 (14.9., 12.10., 9.11. and 7.12.) This club is meant for the mothers and their babies aged less than 1 year. In this group you will have support and tips on baby care, information about the services for baby families in Finland and you will get to know other mothers. Languages Finnish and English. Instructor Nancy Hursti and the trainees of Familia. Registration at the latest on Thursday the week before at the Familia office. Chinese-speaking children s club Monday 17.15 18.00 (7.9. 7.12.) In this club we sing and play in Chinese. The club is meant for 3-6 years old children who want to get to know the Chinese children s culture and learn or maintain Chinese language. Directed by Ling Ollikkala. Fee 45 euros/child, in addition to Familia s membership fee 10 euros/child. Register by email familia@familiaclub.fi by Sunday 23.8. at the latest. Kannelmäki family club Wednesday 10.00 12.00 (9.9. 9.12.) The program includes play, crafts, discussion, doing things together and getting to know the services of Helsinki city. Multicultural living room for single parent families Wednesday 17.30-19.30 (9.9., 14.10., 11.11., 9.12.) Facilitated discussions between multicultural single parents, while the child minder is taking care of the children. Organized by Päksy ry and Familia. Venue: Vallila. Thai-speaking Saimit family club Sunday 15.00 18.00 (6.9. 29.11., cancelled on 8.11.) We sing, play and do other activities together in the club in Thai language. The purpose of the club is to provide a possibility for children to use their other mother tongue in Thai speaking environment. ACTIVITIES FOR ADULTS Camera course Tuesday 29.9. at 14.30 16.30 and Wednesday 30.9. at 14 16.30 On the first day of Camera course we will learn some theory about photography and build an own pinhole camera. Managing your everyday life Friday 10.30 13.30 (11.9., 23.10., 20.11., 11.12.) You ll learn how to take care of your home and children, prepare nutritious Finnish food and other things that will make your life in Finland easier. At the same time you ll also learn some Finnish language. You can bring your child with you. Maximum 10 participants. Material fee 1 euro / time. In association with Finlands svenska Marthaförbund. Venue: The teaching kitchen of the Marthaförbund. We will leave together from the Familia office at 10.00. Register by Wednesday before at the Familia office. Flavors from Finland and around the world kitchen club Friday 11.30 14.00 (18.9., 2.10., 6.11., 4.12.) We ll prepare and taste food and pastries from Finland and other counties. We also learn Finnish words needed in the kitchen. You can take your child with you. Maximum 7 participants. Material fee 1-2 euros/ time. Register by Tuesday before at the Familia office. Arabic dance course Friday 15.30 17.00 (every second week 11.9. 23.10.) In this course you will learn the basics, techniques, body postures and movements of Arabic dance. No previous experience required. Instructor Omar Al-Hindi. Register by the day before at the Familia office. Swahili conversation club Friday 17.30-19.30 (11.9., 23.10., 20.11., 11.12.) Cooking club Sunday at 18.30 21.30 (even weeks 6.9. 13.12.) The club is mainly meant for clients of reception centers. The idea of the club is to have fun and cultural interaction while cooking. EXCURSIONS The Finnish Museum of Photography Thursday 17.9. at 14 Rui Prata will give a guided tour at the museum. Pimiö Darkroom exhibition will be an introduction to an upcoming camera course. You can also attend only for the visit to museum. Register by Tuesday 15.9. at the latest at the Familia office. Pasila library Friday 25.9. at 10.00 Where can you borrow books in your own mother tongue and find material meant for studying Finnish language? On the guided tour, you will receive information and learn to use the services of the library. If you are interested in having a library card take your passport or ID card with picture on it with you. Register by Thursday 24.9. at the latest at the Familia office.

Fazer s confectionery factory Friday 16.10. at 12.00 During the 1 ½ hours guided tour we get an introduction to the secrets and history of chocolate and candy production. We will also have an opportunity to taste the products of Fazer. Maximum 25 persons. Minimum age 10 years. Registration by Monday 12.10. at the latest at the Familia office. Ne-Rå Counselling centre Friday 30.10. at 12.00 At the Ne-Rå Counselling centre, you can ask for help and assistance concerning different issues such as housing, social services or filling in forms. We will also visit the Hakaniemi market hall. Registration by Thursday 29.10. at the latest at the Familia office. Luckan Integration Friday 6.11. at 11.00 On the Finnish Swedish Heritage Day, we will get to know Familia s neighbour Luckan. Luckan Integration offers support and counselling for immigrants in different languages. Registration by Thursday 5.11. at the latest at the Familia office. Virkainfo and Helsinki City Hall Friday 12.11., 14.15 Virka Info is the public information service of the City of Helsinki. It serves all citizens of Helsinki and provides information services for immigrants. Register by Wednesday 11.11. at the latest at the Familia office.

Helsinki City Museum Friday 27.11., 11.00 The Hulluna Helsinkiin exhibition at the Helsinki City Museum shows the favourite places of Helsinki citizens. At Kino Engel, you can look at old films about the city. Register by Thursday 26.11. at the latest at the Familia office. EVENTS Autumn General Meeting of Familia Club Thursday 29.10., 19.00 Meeting will deal with statutory matters (activity plan and budget for 2016, election of the board members and auditors). Before the meeting at 17.00 there is a discussion event on interculturalism. Snacks and drinks will be served. No registration required. Every member is welcome to make their voice heard! Exercise info Thursday 5.11. at 12.30 What is a healthy lifestyle? Why is exercise important? Laura Nokkala from Helsinki City Sports Department tells about meaning of exercise and instructs a short exercise session. Info on mainly for women but men can also join. No registration required.

Dental Care lesson Tuesday 17.11., 14.15. What is dental care? How can you take care of your teeth at home? How do you get a dentist appointment? Sini Tienhaara from Helsinki City talks about dental hygiene and answers all of your questions. No registration required. Open doors candle party Wednesday 16.12., 14.00 17.00 Familia s autumn season ends with a cozy get together party. Entertainments, music, snacks and treats from different countries. You can either just stop by or spend the whole afternoon in atmospheric candle light with nice people. Welcome! No registration required. The aim is to promote equality and non-discrimination in the Finnish society, and also to prevent racism and alienation.
