Precipitation Totals Forecast (Saturday-Thursday)
Hazardous Weather Some showers and thunderstorms have developed across the southern Texas Panhandle early this morning, near a surface low pressure system. Additional precipitation activity could develop/spread across the far northern South Plains this morning. This afternoon, a nearby surface low pressure system will once again be a focus for storm development. Precipitation is anticipated to remain north and west of the region. Abundant moisture from the Big Bend into the Guadalupe will continue a chance for showers and thunderstorms west of the Pecos River. High temperatures continue their slow and steady climb upward today as many areas see 90 degrees for the first time since Sunday.
Hazardous Weather The storm system that has been responsible for our spell of cool, cloudy, and intermittently rainy weather continues to track west and further from the borderland. Despite this we still keep a fair amount of monsoonal moisture over the region. Thus, with daytime heating destabilizing the environment, we'll likely see another round of showers and thunderstorms Saturday afternoon and evening. With more sunshine expected temperatures should warm back up into the mid to upper 80s over the lowlands. Best rain chances should be west with isolated storms east. An upper-level low pressure system near the upper Texas coast will lift slowly northeast through Sunday and bring scattered to broken mid and upper-level clouds along with a chance of showers and thunderstorms. The best thunderstorm chances will be across the southeast counties of North Texas. Severe storms are not expected but locally heavy rainfall and gusty winds are possible with any storm.
Hazardous Weather Partly cloudy skies and near normal temperatures are expected today across South Central Texas and the Hill Country. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible. High temperatures will be in the low to mid-90s. Winds will be from the southeast to south at 10 to 15 mph. An upper-level low pressure system developing across northern Mexico will bring a very moist air mass up the Rio Grande and into the western Rio Grande Plains today. Instability from the low will generate showers and thunderstorms across the Rio Grande Plains today and tonight. Chances for showers and thunderstorms will remain likely on Sunday and into Monday before decreasing Monday afternoon. While the best chances for rain will be across areas adjacent to the Rio Grande, isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible across areas farther east. There is the potential for some of the showers and thunderstorms to produce locally heavy rainfall along the Rio Grande and far western portions of the Rio Grande Plains. Upperlevel high pressure will begin to increase early Monday, with only a slight chance for showers and thunderstorms expected by Monday night.
Hazardous Weather A weak upper-level disturbance will bring isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms to South Texas today. These showers and thunderstorms can be expected to move west along the sea breeze through the afternoon. Otherwise partly cloudy skies can be expected. Thunderstorm chances are expected to increase across the Rio Grande Plains tonight. Highs will range from the upper 80s across the coastal areas to upper 90s across the Rio Grande Plains. Winds will be East to Southeast 10 to 15 mph. Similar conditions are expected on Sunday. The combination of tropical moisture, daytime heating and a late morning/afternoon sea breeze will continue the chance of showers and thunderstorms over Deep South Texas and the Rio Grand Valley today. Best chances will likely occur along the central and western sections this afternoon. Locally heavy rainfall will be possible in the stronger thunderstorms. Skies will be partly cloudy early becoming mostly cloudy during the afternoon. Cloud cover and areas of precipitation will keep daytime highs slightly below to near normal. Southeast winds will be 10 to 15 mph.
Fire Activity (Last 24 Hours) Reports 3,355 (no change) fires and 19,069 (no change) acres destroyed this year. There are 131 (-10) counties with burn bans. The Keetch-Byram Drought Index lists 183 (-68) counties with an average over 400.
