Connecting a Personal Computer or Laptop to RezNet Preamble: Humber has outfitted each suite in Residence with an Ethernet connection. Should you wish to access Internet resources, you may do so by following the setup procedure outlined in this document. Please contact the Technical Service Desk if you encounter problems or require assistance. Step 1: Connect Your Computer Your computer needs two important components to connect to RezNet: a Network Interface Card (NIC) to send and receive data and a Category 5 Ethernet Cable to carry the data to and from your computer. 8 contacts -4 contacts Locate the network jack in your room. Plug one end of your Ethernet cable into the jack. You should hear a click when you insert the connector. Continue by locating the network port on the back of your computer. Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into the network port.
Listen for the click. Turn on your computer. If you did everything correctly, a light will start flashing near the computer s network port. ATTENTION: Do not plug your computer into another guest s jack or allow guests to plug into your jack. Do so and the switch will terminate the connection. Open access jacks are available in the Common and Study rooms. Contact the Technical Service Desk for assistance. Important: A modem is not the same as a Network Interface Card and a telephone cable is not the same as an Ethernet cable. You must use the right hardware! Network cables are available for sale in the Bookstore. Step : Configure Your Operating System After you plug your computer into the data network, you may need to reconfigure your operating system. The procedure you need to follow depends entirely on the operating system you have running. Go to Appendix D Mac OS X Users...Go to Appendix E Do not forget to reboot your computer after applying new network settings. Step 3: Test Your Connection Once you have your computer/laptop connected and your operating system configured, you are more-or-less ready to go. Launch an instance of Internet Explorer and try surfing the Web. If you do not have network access, check your Network Interface Card (NIC) for a link light (Step #1) and double-check your operating system settings (Step #). If you still cannot connect, contact the Technical Service Desk for assistance. Step 4: Install Anti-virus Software It is critically important you run up-to-date virus detecting software. Should your computer become infected or cause problems, the Technical Page of 1
Service Desk will forcibly terminate your connection at the switch until you can prove you have taken corrective action. Depending on the nature of the infection, there may be other repercussions. If you do not have an antivirus program, or if you are unhappy with the antivirus program you presently own, you are in luck because Humber is reselling PC-cillin through the Bookstore for $10. Go to the Bookstore and ask for an Antivirus Voucher. Redeem the voucher at the Media Centre and you are good to download, install, and run the program. You may also want to consider installing software to detect and remove Spyware. Spyware are programs designed to track your computing activity and report back to commercial agencies. Someone may be looking at your personal information right now. Go to the Information Technology Services site and look for a free Spybot download. Note: Tip sheets for installing, using, and configuring PC-cillin and Spybot are available on the Information Technology Services site.
