HISTORY The history of Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia goes a long way back to 1993. The University began its early operation as a Polytechnic Staff Training Centre and later Institut Teknologi Tun Hussein Onn in 1996 named after the late Tun Hussein Onn, the third Prime Minister of Malaysia. The institute was later upgraded to university college, i.e. Kolej Universiti Teknologi Tun Hussein Onn in 2000 and then to Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia in 2007. Today the university has more than 15,000 students, including more than 450 international students constituting a vibrant campus community. The numbers of graduate students is currently more than 10% of the total student enrolment. This demonstrates the research focus of the university in understanding and implementing new niche areas such as sustainability which is in line with the global green technology initiatives. The following postgraduate degrees are offered on full-time and part-time basis. Doctor of Philosophy Master s Degree by Research Master s Degree by Coursework Master s Degree by Mixed-mode Doctor of Philosophy The Doctor of Philosophy degree is a research degree by thesis under the supervision of experienced members of academic staff or a supervisory panel. A panel is made up of a graduate staff and experts from the University or other institutions. The minimum duration of study is 3 years for full time and 4 years for part time. The progress of a research student is monitored and assessed by the supervisor at the end of each semester. Final assessment is made through the thesis prepared by the student and an oral examination. A student who has satisfied the Examination Committee in all aspects of their work is eligible for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Master s Degree by Research The Master s degree by research is a research degree by thesis under the supervision of experienced members of academic staff or a supervisory panel, similar to that for a PhD candidate. The minimum duration of study is one year for full time and two years for part time. The progress of a research student is monitored and assessed by the supervisor at the end of each semester. Final assessment is made through the thesis prepared by the student and an oral examination. A student who has satisfied the Examination Committee in all aspects of their work is eligible for the award of the Master s degree. Master s Degree by Coursework The Master s degree by coursework programme is designed to extend the knowledge and skills gained from the first degree and to develop new professional skills in the students. The programme involves lectures, seminars and project work. A minimum of 40 credits of study and a final Cumulative Point Average (CPA) of at least 3.0 is required for the award of the Master s degree. The minimum 40 credits of study comprises a combination of compulsory subjects, electives and a Master s project. Each subject carries 2 to 3 credits, and assessments are made through assignments, tests, master s project and final examinations. The Master s project is assessed through an oral presentation and a written report. Master s Degree by Mixed-mode The Master degree by mixed-mode is combination of coursework and research activities. The assessment depends upon both the coursework and dissertation (research work). The component for the coursework is not more than 50% and the dissertation contributes the other 50%. The Mixed Mode program develops the research skill of the students on top of enhancing the theoretical knowledge of the subject area.
