3 Mechanical Engineering PhD / MASc / MEng Program Objectives: The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering offers a cutting-edge graduate program leading to a Doctor in Philosophy (PhD) degree, a Master of Applied Science (MASc) degree or a Master of Engineering (MEng) degree. This program was designed for students seeking advanced study in a professionally based, applied program that provides opportunities for research in Thermofluids, Manufacturing, Materials, Solid Mechanics and Industrial Engineering. To enable students to realize potential upon graduation by providing an excellent education and experience within the realm of mechanical and industrial engineering. To aid students in further developing abstract, critical and independent thinking through theoretical and philosophical study. To bring relevance to the program through strong interaction with the mechanical and industrial engineering industry with respect to both education and research. To conduct significant, internationally recognized research across a spectrum of key areas that are of importance to the mechanical and industrial community within Canada.

5 Requirements & Curriculum Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) The PhD program is offered on a full-time basis only and requires the successful completion of four one-term graduate courses, passing a qualifying/candidacy examination and a dissertation based on original research. The core aspect of the program is the successful defense of the doctoral dissertation at both Program and School of Graduate Studies oral examinations. Master of Applied Science (MASc) The MASc program is offered on a full-time basis only and requires the successful completion of five one-term course credits and a research thesis. An oral presentation of the research thesis, and results, will be arranged in a seminar format. Master of Engineering (MEng) The MEng program is available on a full- or part-time basis and requires the successful completion of eight one-term courses and a major project. An oral presentation of the project report, and results, will be arranged in a seminar format. There is also a course-only option available where students may apply to substitute two courses for the major project.

6 Thermofluids Research Fields Applicants may choose one of the following research fields: Fundamental understanding of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and heat transfer, which underlie this field, is critical to the design and improvement of a wide variety of engineering devices and systems. A key objective of thermofluids research is the improvement of energy systems. Convective heat transfer research is being conducted by means of advanced experimental and numerical techniques. Numerous research activities are focused on improving the efficiency and environmental impact of such energy technologies as cogeneration, district energy, thermal energy storage, and electricity generation by means of conventional techniques (fossil and nuclear) and alternative techniques (solar energy and fuel-cell). Thermofluids Manufacturing, Materials and Solid Mechanics Industrial Engineering Manufacturing, Materials and Solid Mechanics Research related to manufacturing focuses on robotics, micro and nano manufacturing, manufacturing automation and controls. Some of the department's research activities in these fields include the development of highperformance visually-guided robots, and studies on the sensor-based control of electromechanical devices. Applications of advanced control systems in a range of areas, including metal cutting, are also ongoing. Extensive research is being carried out in the areas of materials engineering and mechanics of solids and structures. This research includes the characterization and analysis of materials and structures for energy systems, transportation applications and the casting of materials. Investigation into the vibration and buckling of composite plates and shells, thermal stresses, creep and plasticity is also undertaken. Industrial Engineering This field covers a range of industrial engineering topics, including supply chain management, applied operations research, production and inventory control, human factors, decision-support systems, optimization and flexible manufacturing systems. These topics are relevant to a wide range of industries and represent the optimal integration of human knowledge and technology. Research into decision-making methodologies has led to the development of conflict resolution models. Research on optimization modelling and solution techniques is being undertaken with application to many industrial systems, such as energy, environmental, and telecommunication systems. Research is ongoing into cost management and enterprise modelling, with an emphasis on using knowledge-based information systems and artificial intelligence. Moreover, research on modelling, analysis and design of flexible manufacturing systems is being carried out.

For more information on ISS, visit English Language Proficiency Requirement Admission Applicants whose language of instruction during their undergraduate studies was a language other than English are required to submit a test of English language proficiency. For more information on acceptable standard tests and score requirements, visit Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Applicants to the PhD program must have completed a Master's program in Mechanical Engineering, or a related Engineering or Applied Science field, from a recognized university. A Master's degree with a minimum B+ average or equivalent and demonstrated research capabilities are required. Two letters of reference are required, at least one of which must be from a former professor. Master of Applied Science (MASc) Master of Engineering (MEng) Applicants to the Master s program must have completed a baccalaureate degree in Mechanical Engineering, or a related Engineering or Applied Science field, from a recognized university and a demonstrated capacity to succeed in the graduate program. For the MASc program, a minimum B+ average or equivalent in the last two years of study is required. For the MEng program, a minimum of a B average or equivalent in the last two years of study is required. Two letters of reference are required, at least one of which must be from a former professor.
