System components Externa window couper OCU UHF sensor (couper) PD puses induce mutipe broadband resonances in the GIS chamber. These resonant UHF signas are detected by sensitive UHF sensors (coupers) which are instaed on each of the phases. In new GIS the sensors are usuay fitted internay, on the inside of the hatch cover pates (interna coupers). These interna sensors pick up high transient over-votages when disconnect switches or circuit breakers operate. Compete protection for the PDMG-RH systems sensitive eectronics is assured by fitting an externa DMS protector which shunts dangerous votages to earth. Optica Converter Unit (OCU) Each OCU takes the signa from the UHF sensors and appies fitering to reject interference (noise) that can resut from broadcast signas, discharges in nearby air-insuated equipment and other sources. The characteristic of the UHF puse is then sent to the Equipment Cabinet. For retrofitted systems, externa sensors are attached to inspection windows or the exposed edges of insuating spacers. They can be mounted without degassing the chambers and can have sensitivity eves approaching interna sensors. Quaitro DMS can custom-design a types of UHF sensors for particuar appications and caibrate them to ensure they meet the users specification for sensitivity and bandwidth. An additiona channe connected to an externa antenna measures the presence of externa interfering signas and removes the interfering signa from the couper signa by a gating function. Additiona fibres within the cabe are used for OCU contro and to initiate an integrated sef-test procedure that automaticay checks and ogs the condition of each channe. The OCUs are totay protected against high-votage transients and are suitabe for use in harsh environments. Equipment Cabinet The Equipment Cabinet is typicay ocated in the reay or contro room and receives the optica data streams from the OCUs and transmits contro signas back to the OCU (i.e. for the sef test). The data is formatted and stored in a centra server, giving a reatime dispay of the partia discharge activity. The PC interfaces to an IEC 61850 network for transfer of aarms, status and data summary, acting as an IED on the network. Equipment Cabinet...from the word eader in PDM www.quaitrocorp.com

On numerous occasions it has detected potentiay dangerous defects in GIS before faiure coud occur. Quaitro DMS have instaed PDMG-R systems in over 200 GIS, at votages from 66-1000 kv and data is currenty being received from more than 10,000 UHF coupers. During the past 15 years, outages were obtained to remove 84 defects that woud amost certainy have caused compete breakdown had no action been taken. An in-service breakdown in a GIS typicay takes more than a week to repair, and the costs of this, the consequent circuit disruption and oss of suppy in a singe outage usuay far outweigh the initia cost of the PDMG-RH. Discharge in a 230 kv GIS spacer after 5 months of service In a 230 kv GIS, a sudden increase in partia discharge activity was detected by the instaed PDMG-R system approximatey five months after first energization. Prior to this time, the GIS had not shown any PD activity. The partia discharge grew rapidy over a period of ony 24 hours. The operators personne were aerted and responded to the PD event aarm by immediatey isoating the corresponding section of pant. The partia discharge patterns recorded by the PDMG-R system had the characteristics of an insuation defect in one of the spacer insuators. Upon examination by X-ray, the cause of the partia discharge was confirmed to be a 3.2mm void in the epoxy materia. After the spacer was repaced the GIS was retested and went back into service without any detectabe PD. Broken conductor joint detected in a 400kV GIS A 400 kv GIS was retrofitted with a PDMG-R as part of a ifetime extension program. The existing eves of PD were monitored for change. The PDMG-R detected and correcty warned of a deveoping defect. An outage was taken and the GIS was inspected and a broken pam joint in the conductor was found. The use of the PDMG-R System enabed this serious defect to be found and repaired before any serious damage to the GIS occurred. Defects in 400 kv GIS/ transformer interfaces After the commissioning of a 400 kv GIS substation, PD signas were recorded by the PDMG-R cose to the transformer / GIS interfaces on severa circuits. The PD signas started within a few hours and up to severa days after the first energizing. The recorded 100-day-history showed the start point of the discharges and that the magnitude of the PD signas in the first stage were increasing up to a stabe eve. The signas were in the range of up to severa hundred pc. The phase resoved patterns indicated the presence of defects in the insuation of the oi to gas bushings. The bushings were removed and retested in the works where they were found to have a systemic defect that woud have ead to eventua faiure. After repacement of the bushing with new ones, the PD was competey eiminated.
