English A: Language and Literature-Prof. RONDANINA WRITTEN TASK 2 Area of Study POWER AND PRIVILEGE - REPRESENTATION OF SOCIAL GROUPS AND MINORITIES IN PARTICULAR TEXTS Choose ONE of the following Activities ACTIVITY ONE Prescribed Question: How and why is a social group represented in a particular way? Consider stereotyping and its definition (from Wikipedia): a generalized perception of first impressions, judging with the eyes/criticising ones outer appearance, a conventional and oversimplified conception, opinion, or image, forms of social consensus rather than individual judgments. The word 'stereotype' comes from the Greek 'stereo' and 'typos' = 'solid impression'. Stereotypes don t need to be bad. The tourism industry of Australia relies heavily on the stereotype of an ancient and mythical Aboriginal Australia to sell its products. Consider the following texts from Tourism Australia s most recent campaigns for a Written Task 2 response. First, look at all of them to get an idea of the way a particular social group (Indigenous Australians) is portrayed and why. Then, choose one text on which you will base your analysis. Your critical response will take the form of a formal essay, with an introduction, welldeveloped arguments in body paragraphs and a conclusion. In preparation for your analysis proceed by steps: 1. Unpack the question into subquestions/points in the form of a spider diagram that pertain to the text(s) you are going to analyse, exploring the implications of the question. Consider both visual and textual elements to make your analysis in response to the question: - What type of dominant images are present in this/these campaign/adverts? - What message do you think the makers of this/these campaign/adverts were trying to put across? - What type of stereotypes are used? Could they be considered as good stereotypes? - In the Tourism Australia website and print ad campaign (Text 2 and 3) different people are used in different contexts. What representations are made of these people? What connotations in relation to culture are made? - the Tourism Australia website (Text 2) readily uses the common stereotype of Australia= friendly Aboriginal people. The caption of the image, however, reads Mossman Gorge, North Queensland. Why wasn t the Aboriginal tour guide acknowledged? (Aboriginal people still seem to be nobodies 2. Now, rewrite (rephrase) the prescribed question to reflect the aspects you will consider in your answer. Eg. How and why is... represented...? 3. Now, start writing your essay 2

Text 1 TEXT 2 -Further reading containing other material to consider for your analysis: http://www.creativespirits.info/aboriginalculture/people/aboriginal-australiastereotype.html 3

Text 3 (For this text consider the whole Tourism Australia print ad campaign available at http://www.theage.com.au/photogallery/travel/tourism-australias-new-campaign-20081113-5y0o.html?selectedimage=0) For the analysis of this text also read the article from the Australian newspaper The Age (available at http://www.theage.com.au/travel/tourism-ad-tramples-all-over-our-culture- 20081118-6adr.html) ACTIVITY 2 Prescribed Question: Which social groups are marginalised, excluded or silenced within the text? Watch the TV commercial Celebration of a Nation advertising Australia s Bicentenary in 1988 available at http://www.youtube.com/watch?nr=1&feature=endscreen&v=ydz3lo9fcxq Then consider the implications of your prescribed question in relation to the following points. 1. Unpack your question (make a spider diagram). Consider both visual and textual elements to make your analysis in response to the question: 4

- What type of representations of Australian society and identity are contained in the Celebration of a Nation advertisement for Australia s Bicentenary (200 years of white settlement in Australia) TO answer this first question consider Australia s colonial origins and history up to those years (1980s) (Stolen Generations, Assimilation, White Australia policy...) - What do you think are the dominant images presented in this advert? - What message do you think the makers of this advert were trying to put across? - Do you think they were successful in portraying all social and minority groups making up Australia at the time? If not, who do you think was marginalised or misrepresented and why? - When the campaign was originally discussed, the makers wanted to focus especially on the multicultural character of Australian society and proposed the initial theme of Living together as a way to define Australia s national identity. This was later changed into Celebration of a Nation. Which of the two do you think the final product better conveys? - How do you think would Indigenous Australians react to this commercial? ENGLISH A-ARTOM ENGLISH A: LITERATURE Read Midaq Alley and write on ONE of the following: Discuss the role of the setting (both historical and geographical) and its importance in the novel. Do you think there are some characters in the work whose chief role is to convey cultural values? what forces and cultural values do they represent and how do they develop in the course of the novel? (stay focused and plan: don t try to discuss the whole novel in one essay!!!) ENGLISH A: LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE Write a written task 2 for Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Remember to choose and read the question you choose carefully!!! Read The Stranger. HISTORY-Rampone Finish Mao and study Peron. Work on your IA and keep in touch with me for any problem. Math Studies-Franchini Download scanned sheets and complete. Math SL-Damiano Download files and complete. CHEMISTRY-CASAZZA You must complete the attached Chemistry SL exam as summer homework. You will be asked to show the correctly filled paper and to demonstrate that you have understood everything. You also all must review the syllabus covered during the year and expect to have a summative test the first day of class. BIOLOGY-CARTA IB2 Biology Summer Assignment As you know the IB program is a 2-years course and summer must be seen as an opportunity to relax but also to improve where you have to. It is quite important that you feel comfortable with all the topics discussed in class over the year. This means that you should revise (independently) the topics whose level of knowledge is still weak. To facilitate the next topic we are going to cover next year (GENETICS), you have to revise very well : -DNA Structure -DNA Replication -DNA Transcription -DNA Translation 6

Make clear diagrams on your notebook. It s very important for you to know deeply these topics in order to move on with the next part of the subject. Moreover, we have to think about our Internal Assessment: Over the summer you have to design and implement a full lab report about Factors affecting seeds germination Important information can be found at the following link, which provide the overview of the practical and the possible problems you may find: http://www.jlhudsonseeds.net/germination.htm Please read before starting the experiment. After this, state a well defined and narrow research question you want to answer, decide for the material to use, perform the experiment and collect the data. Also, Data Analysis, Conclusion and Evaluation must be performed. N.B.: this is a quite simple practical, which may be a bit demanding in terms of time (About two weeks are needed to collect the data 5 minutes per day). In order to better understand the IB criteria you are provided with a fully written lab report (file 2) that you must evaluate and grade following the criteria (file 1). The instructions for evaluation are provided as well. Also, check your diet-energy intake lab report, and correct it where you can! Physics-Colucci Download Physics files and follow directions in Word document. TOK- Rampone Work on your presentations and keep in touch with the teacher. Chose at least on essay from the titles below: 1. Knowledge is generated through the interaction of critical and creative thinking. Evaluate this statement in two areas of knowledge. 7

2. Compare and contrast knowledge which can be expressed in words/symbols with knowledge that cannot be expressed in this way. Consider CAS and one or more areas of knowledge. 3. Using history and at least one other area of knowledge, examine the claim that it is possible to attain knowledge despite problems of bias and selection. 4. When should we discard explanations that are intuitively appealing? 5. What is it about theories in the human sciences and natural sciences that makes them convincing? 6. It is more important to discover new ways of thinking about what is already known than to discover new data or facts. To what extent would you agree with this claim? 8
