Prior to Relay for Life Have students/employees collect quarters in small 35 mm film canisters Ransom game Relay for Life logo on pink flamingos, pink commode with flowers in it, or Santa s reindeers painted pink or purple (Relay Bucks ) place in someone s yard pay to get out of yard or send to someone else s yard raised $500 in less than 2 hours by attorneys sending to each other Have a TOP LESS car wash wash the bottoms of the cars for free charge $5 10 to wash the top Sell Relay for Life dog tags Dress down days Silent auction restaurant coupons, gift certificates Restaurants donate 25% of profits from one night each month to ACS when teachers/staff serve the customers (students) Penny wars challenge teams to collect the most pennies Pay to pie the teacher/principal/doctor/preacher/mayor/businessman Hold a Relay Pride Week at school or work like a spirit week decorate halls pay to wear themed outfits wacky tacky day, patriotic day, school spirit, dress for success, tropical, 50 s, 60 s, 70 s, 80 s, etc. Camp out for cancer someone camps out in an obvious place until he/she raises $1,000 Sell ACS Moons & Stars Set a goal of every student/employee purchasing 2 luminary bags at $5 each Chalking sidewalks around campuses to promote the event Committee member/team captain can mentor new team captains, etc. during their first year If teams or team members raise a specific amount by a specific date, give prizes Relay for Life merchandise catalog teams can compete for specific merchandise that local ACS office can order Prizes for teams that turn in registration fee and team participants (with waiver forms) on the second night Give small package of nuts with a note attached thanks for keeping us from going nuts Ice breakers 1. musical chairs (participants go on a quick scavenger hunt and return when music stops) 2. snow ball fight (participants throw large marshmallows at each other) 6
3. pass the Lifesaver on a toothpick Letter writing parties bring the letterhead and letters with blanks everyone brings 10 names and addresses fill in blanks on letters address envelopes mail all letters that same day one group mailed out 350 letters on the same day the local ACS office has form letters to use Distribute red hearts to your team members at a planning meeting ask who has been touched by cancer: sibling, parent, grandparent, friend for each one, tear off a small piece of the heart cancer strips away your heart, piece by piece Onsite @ Relay for Life Torches available for $100 donation in honor or memory of someone stays lit for the entire event torches donated by local merchant Frozen t shirt contest each team selects one person to try to get the shirt on the quickest goal: less than 10 minutes Set a goal of placing quarters side by side around the inside of the track during the actual event Look Bad, Feel Worse guy or girl makes up another guy and have beauty contest Pet parade dress pets according to a specific theme $25 entry fee prize is donated by veterinarian s office grooming, shots, etc. Baby stroller parade decorate strollers and babies (and parents?) prizes donated by local photographers or stores with baby supplies Blow out/away cancer give participants a tiny bottle of bubbles everyone blows bubbles during a lap VERY effective if it s done on the sidelines as survivors pass during the first lap Educate TEACH at the event have an education display about cancer control (prevention, treatment, research) play games Sell kisses for $1 (adult or child) Cheetos throw cover someone s face in Cool Whip winner has the most Cheetos stuck to the face Karaoke or Not? Give donations to have someone sing karaoke style or have people pay NOT to sing Step show at 8:00 p.m. Theme songs during the event every team sings its song at 3:00 a.m. 7
Local television broadcast (Channel 6 news in Thomson, GA) Paper wedding dress, gladiator, toga, or superhero (use bathroom tissue) Relay with cup of water on top of head, pour into another person s cup Instead of incentive prizes for games and activities, award teams spirit points Compete for best campsite, best team spirit, etc. Alligator wrestling with kiddie pool and green Jell O blindfold contestant, object is to find the plug and deflate the alligator in the quickest time) Dum dum suckers don t be a dum dum support the Relay for Life Fear Factor with gummy worms, mashed bananas and strawberries Dance party at midnight even grandmothers can dance the Macarena Relay fun pins, hats, bandanas, necklaces/bracelets Competitions between adults/children, faculty/students, men/women, boys/girls, etc. hula hoop, Twister, whistling Battle of the mascots have local mascots for companies and schools compete for Favorite Mascot Go see other teams support their onsite fundraisers bring lots of change and one dollar bills Jail & Bail have law enforcement officers arrest local dignitaries set up a chain gang raise bail by collecting donation as they walk around the track Have a bell ring where every team has to send someone to check in as they pass the bell on that lap Frisbee golf tournament using cheap laundry baskets Banana eating contest with participants wearing panty hose over their head Have a pie lap participants eat a slice of pie while they are walking that lap Hot dog cooking contest prize for best hot dog Walking Bingo participants play Bingo while walking the track American Idol becomes Relay Idol singers, cheerleaders, etc. Have a Battle of the Bands/Drums or talent contest before the event with the 4 best bands/acts performing at the event Prizes can be massages, facials, manicures, pedicures, haircuts, paid day off of work, etc. Potato golf put a potato in one leg of panty hose and play golf Trash can basketball Dunking booth Food snow cones, Dip n dots ice cream 8
