HUSKY LEADERSHIP CERTIFICATE STUDENT GUIDE What is the Husky Leadership Certificate? Thrugh the Husky Leadership Certificate, students identify, understand, develp, define, articulate and demnstrate their leadership grwth and accmplishments. By pursuing a Husky Leadership Certificate, students engage in a prcess that enables them t reflect upn their leadership develpment and articulate their understanding t a larger audience. Students create a leadership e-prtfli where they display and articulate their reflectins, values, skills and experiences. T maximize their learning, each student is matched with a leadership mentr wh helps the student reflect upn and give vice t their leadership develpment. Need and Purpse The University f Washingtn s visin is t educate a diverse student bdy t becme respnsible glbal citizens and future leaders thrugh a challenging learning envirnment infrmed by cutting-edge schlarship. T fulfill this visin, students need the pprtunity t develp the 21 st century skills, knwledge and attitudes t becme effective change agents and cntributing members in their cmmunities. The use f e-prtflis t facilitate and capture student learning ver time has emerged as a prmising practice in many institutins f higher educatin as discussed in a 2012 AAC&U publicatin abut the achievement f liberal educatin utcmes. As a way t make students wn wrk the centerpiece f assessment, prtflis are an ideal frmat fr cllecting evidence f student wrk that als facilitate student reflectin upn, and engagement with, their wn learning ver time (Finley, 2012). The Husky Leadership Certificate respnds t these institutinal gals and evidence-based best practices. Thrugh utilizing e-prtflis as a pedaggical apprach t deepen student learning, students will reflect upn their leadership develpment and grwth and cntinue t develp their capacity fr scially respnsible leadership. In additin, e-prtflis serve as a vehicle t help fulfill the gal f the Husky Experience where students cnnect and synthesize what they have learned inside and utside the classrm, and cmmunicate thse insights with clarity. Husky Leadership Certificate bjectives The bjectives f the Husky Leadership Certificate are: 1) T engage students in a prcess f critical reflectin thrugh which they are able t articulate and demnstrate their leadership develpment and cmpetence; 2) T recgnize and celebrate student leadership and the dedicatin f UW students in develping their leadership capacity; 3) T recgnize the varied and expansive frms f student engagement that develps their leadership ptential, skills and knwledge. 1
Student Learning Objectives The Husky Leadership Certificate is designed t align with the learning bjectives identified by the Husky Leadership Initiative (Appendix A). In additin, this nn-credit certificate prgram is intended t supprt and cmplement the learning gals designed by varius campus partners. Prgram Requirements T earn the Husky Leadership Certificate, students must: 1. Attend an rientatin sessin. 2. Wrk with a Husky Leadership Certificate mentr (meet with mentr at least 1x/mnth). 3. An ptinal 1-credit GEN ST class will be ffered during Winter Quarter 2014 n Mndays frm 3:30-4:50 pm. Husky Leadership Certificate students are highly encuraged t enrll in this class t supprt them in the e-prtfli develpment prcess. 4. Cmplete the e-prtfli and submit t Husky Leadership Initiative fr review. 5. Present highlights f their leadership e-prtfli during the annual Spring Celebratin f Service and Leadership n May 20, 2014 r in a small grup interview. Prgram Cmpnent Details 1. Orientatin The rientatin is the first step in the prcess and ges thrugh in detail what is expected f the applicant. Students will attend ne f the fllwing rientatin sessins: Thursday, 11/14/13: 12:30-1:30 pm in HUB 340 Friday, 11/15/13: 2:30-3:30 pm in HUB 340 2. Rle f mentr A significant aspect f the prgram is the mentrship cmpnent where students are matched with a faculty/staff mentr wh nt nly guides the student thrugh the prgram but als prvides pprtunities fr critical reflectin leading t enhanced learning and grwth. Mentrs are respnsible fr guiding the student thrugh the e-prtfli develpment prcess. Mentrs are asked t: Knw and understand the requirements fr cmpleting the e-prtfli. Engage students in a prcess f critical reflectin upn their leadership develpment. Supprt student in identifying particular key learning experiences and articulating learning/knwledge (explicit and tacit) generated frm thse experiences. Prvide feedback and advice n e-prtfli drafts thrughut the prcess. Develp and nurture a mentring relatinship with the student. Maintain regular cntact with the student (mentrs and mentees shuld meet at least mnthly). With the student, cnstruct expectatins fr the relatinship, regarding bth the respnsibilities f the student and the mentr. 2

It cntains evidence and examples f a student s leadership develpment and capacities. The e- prtfli is bth a prcess and a tangible prduct. Thrugh the prcess f creating the e-prtfli, students will engage in reflectin, critical thinking, and the synthesis f infrmatin t demnstrate their leadership grwth. As a prduct, a successful prtfli will include the fllwing cmpnents: Requirement 1 - Persnal Intrductin and leadership philsphy This pening sectin includes any persnal infrmatin the student wuld wish fr readers t knw abut alng with a statement f the student s leadership philsphy and hw it has evlved ver time. This sectin shuld als include a statement f hw the student envisins engaging in leadership in the future. Requirement 2 - Demnstratin f learning and leadership grwth Students must demnstrate learning and develpment in 22 f 50 different Knwledge, Attitudes, Skills, and Behavirs (KASB) that have been identified by the HLI as imprtant fr engaging in leadership. T d s, students will reflect upn at least 3 key learning experiences and demnstrate their grwth and cmpetence in relatin t the KASB leadership capacities. T d s, students will use the fllwing utline: Select a particular KASB* they have significant cmpetence with r have significantly develped as a result f their experiences. Identify an experience related t the selected KASB and prvide a reflectin statement n their cmpetence and develpment in the selected KASB. The reflectin statement shuld articulate hw the identified experience cntributed t their grwth and hw that KASB may play ut in the future. Prvide an artifact that serves as evidence f learning. Artifacts shuld add additinal meaning t the text and shuld capture the essence f this particular experience. Leadership e-prtfli Presentatin Each applicant is expected t present highlights frm their leadership e-prtfli at the Spring Celebratin f Service and Leadership n May 20, 2014 r during a small grup interview. Spring Celebratin presentatins will take place during a public ral breakut sessin. Small grup interviews will be scheduled in late Spring Quarter 2014. Final versins f students e-prtflis are due by May 11, 2014. It is highly recmmended that mentrs and students determine a timeline fr rugh drafts submissins, feedback and revisins. A sample timeline is included as a guide. 5. Review Prcess Applicants are reviewed n the basis f bth their e-prtfli and their final presentatin. Review f e-prtfli: Mentrs shuld be prviding feedback n students e-prtflis thrughut the prcess. Students shuld submit at least ne full rugh draft f their e-prtfli fr feedback frm their mentrs and make necessary revisins. The finalized e-prtfli must be submitted t the Husky Leadership Initiative fr review by May 11, 2014 prir t presenting at the Spring Celebratin f Service and Leadership n May 20, 2014. A reader will review the e-prtfli t ensure the cmpletin f the requirements and will als ffer feedback and respnses t e-prtfli cntents. E-Prtflis are nly reviewed fr cmpletin; prtflis will nt be reviewed thrugh an assessment rubric. Review f final presentatin: The purpse f the final presentatin is t ffer a venue t publicly share and synthesize the student s prtfli prcess. Students will be given a set f questins t address in the final presentatin. A review/interview cmmittee will prvide feedback and apprval f cmpletin. 6. Recgnitin Upn satisfactry cmpletin f the abve requirements, students will be awarded a Husky Leadership Certificate. 4
