Printing to HU Print Servers with Canon Printers From Non-Active Directory Windows Workstations This document describes how to print to Helsinki University Print Servers with Canon printers from a Windows workstation that is not member of the HU Active Directory (atkk, hyad). The described setup works only if your workstation is in the HU internal network. Introduction In this setup we Find the correct print queue path using WPR (Action 1) Add the print queue to your workstation (Action 2) Save the credentials to access the print queue (Action 2) Let the workstation to install the printer drivers from the print server (Action 2) Learn what to do when our password changes and the printing does not work (Action 3) Other cases Workstation in Visitors Network? No problem! If your workstation is connected to visitors networks (eduroam, HUPnet) you may print using WPR. The documentation can be found at http://www.helsinki.fi/helpdesk/ohjeet/yliopiston tyoasema ja tallennustila/tulostus ja skannaus Links to the English instructions can be found from the bottom of the page. Centrally Administered Windows Missing the Nearest Printer? Follow the screenshots in Finnish instructions at http://www.helsinki.fi/helpdesk/ohjeet/yliopiston tyoasema ja tallennustila/tulostus ja skannaus/tulostimen lisays xp.html (Windows XP) http://www.helsinki.fi/helpdesk/ohjeet/yliopiston tyoasema ja tallennustila/tulostus ja skannaus/tulostimen lisays win7.html (Windows 7)

Available print queues These print queues are available for Smartcard printing. Please, choose one of the following when installing a printer. For Windows workstations \\PUNAKUUSI2\Smartcard-PCL \\MUSTAKUUSI2\Smartcard-PCL \\MUSTAKUUSI1\Smartcard-PCL \\PUNAKUUSI1\Smartcard-PCL \\HOPEAKUUSI1\Smartcard-PCL \\VALKOKUUSI1\Smartcard-PCL For Mac workstations \\PUNAKUUSI2\Smartcard-PS \\MUSTAKUUSI2\Smartcard-PS \\MUSTAKUUSI1\Smartcard-PS \\PUNAKUUSI1\Smartcard-PS \\HOPEAKUUSI1\Smartcard-PS \\VALKOKUUSI1\Smartcard-PS

Action 1: Find the correct print queue path using WPR Before you can install a printer you have to know its path (e.g. \\PUNAKUUSI1\Smartcard-PCL). The easiest way to find this out in a non-domain workstation is to use the Web Print (WPR). 1. Go to https://wpr.helsinki.fi 2. Log in with your HU account: 3. Click the screwdriver icon and Add printer link: 4. Enter a search term; Smartcard, printer serial number or your street address: 5. Copy the path of the desired print queue (e.g. \\PUNAKUUSI1\Smartcard-PCL ) to the clipboard:

Action 2: Add the print queue to your workstation 6. Open the Run dialog XP: Start > Run Vista: Start (lower left corner) 7: Start (lower left corner) 7. Paste the desired print queue path to the run dialog. Windows XP Paste the path e.g. \\PUNAKUUSI1\Smartcard-PCL Windows Vista Paste the path e.g. \\PUNAKUUSI1\Smartcard-PCL Windows 7 Paste the path e.g. \\PUNAKUUSI1\ Smartcard-PCL If any problems occur, add domain.ad.helsinki.fi to the server name: e.g. \\PUNAKUUSI1.ad.helsinki.fi\Smartcard-PCL

8. The workstation asks your user account. Note! There may be a significant delay (e.g. 1-2 minutes) before the authentication dialog appears. Windows XP Add a prefix atkk\ to your account, enter a password and check the Remember my password option. Windows Vista Add a prefix atkk\ to your account, enter a password and check the Remember my password option. Windows 7 Add a prefix atkk\ to your account, enter a password and check the Remember my credentials option.

9. The workstation downloads and installs printer drivers from the print server. The drivers are best available and preconfigured for the particular printer model. In some setups the workstation warns you about the installation. Please accept the driver installation. Windows XP Example of the possible print driver installation confirmation. Click Yes. Windows Vista Example of the possible print driver installation confirmation. Click Install driver. 10. You re done! The printer works for this particular local Windows user account. If your workstation has another user account they have to install the printer for their account as well.

Action 3: When your password changes HU Active Directory requires you to periodically change your password. When your AD password changes the saved passwords obviously do not work anymore. The print jobs are not accepted to the print server and remain in the workstation print queue with error message (the samples are from Windows Vista): In order to continue printing you must save your new password to your workstation. 1. Open the printer that you wish to operate. Windows XP: Start > Printers and Faxes > Double-click the desired printer Windows Vista: Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Printer > Double-click the desired printer Windows 7: Start > Devices and Printers > Double-click the desired printer 2. Find the address of the correct print server (e.g. Smartcard-PCL on PUNAKUUSI1 ): 3. Open Windows Explorer. Windows XP: Right-click Start button (lower left corner) > Explore Windows Vista: Right-click Start button (lower left corner) > Explore Windows 7: Right-click Start button (lower left corner) > Open Windows Explorer

4. Enter the print server s address (see step 2) with prefix (e.g. \\PUNAKUUSI1\Smartcard-PCL ): 5.Enter your username and password.

6. You may resend the jammed print jobs from your print queue Open the queue by following the step 1 Right-click jammed job > Restart
