Action 1: Find the correct print queue path using WPR Before you can install a printer you have to know its path (e.g. \\PUNAKUUSI1\Smartcard-PCL). The easiest way to find this out in a non-domain workstation is to use the Web Print (WPR). 1. Go to https://wpr.helsinki.fi 2. Log in with your HU account: 3. Click the screwdriver icon and Add printer link: 4. Enter a search term; Smartcard, printer serial number or your street address: 5. Copy the path of the desired print queue (e.g. \\PUNAKUUSI1\Smartcard-PCL ) to the clipboard:
Action 2: Add the print queue to your workstation 6. Open the Run dialog XP: Start > Run Vista: Start (lower left corner) 7: Start (lower left corner) 7. Paste the desired print queue path to the run dialog. Windows XP Paste the path e.g. \\PUNAKUUSI1\Smartcard-PCL Windows Vista Paste the path e.g. \\PUNAKUUSI1\Smartcard-PCL Windows 7 Paste the path e.g. \\PUNAKUUSI1\ Smartcard-PCL If any problems occur, add domain.ad.helsinki.fi to the server name: e.g. \\PUNAKUUSI1.ad.helsinki.fi\Smartcard-PCL
8. The workstation asks your user account. Note! There may be a significant delay (e.g. 1-2 minutes) before the authentication dialog appears. Windows XP Add a prefix atkk\ to your account, enter a password and check the Remember my password option. Windows Vista Add a prefix atkk\ to your account, enter a password and check the Remember my password option. Windows 7 Add a prefix atkk\ to your account, enter a password and check the Remember my credentials option.
9. The workstation downloads and installs printer drivers from the print server. The drivers are best available and preconfigured for the particular printer model. In some setups the workstation warns you about the installation. Please accept the driver installation. Windows XP Example of the possible print driver installation confirmation. Click Yes. Windows Vista Example of the possible print driver installation confirmation. Click Install driver. 10. You re done! The printer works for this particular local Windows user account. If your workstation has another user account they have to install the printer for their account as well.
Action 3: When your password changes HU Active Directory requires you to periodically change your password. When your AD password changes the saved passwords obviously do not work anymore. The print jobs are not accepted to the print server and remain in the workstation print queue with error message (the samples are from Windows Vista): In order to continue printing you must save your new password to your workstation. 1. Open the printer that you wish to operate. Windows XP: Start > Printers and Faxes > Double-click the desired printer Windows Vista: Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Printer > Double-click the desired printer Windows 7: Start > Devices and Printers > Double-click the desired printer 2.
