LEAD. ENGAGE. ACHIEVE. DEVELOP.

MILO M. ZONKA LEAD Brevard Chairman of the Board, 2013-2015 Message from the LEAD Brevard Board Chair Ah, 1985. Madonna topped the Billboard charts and Back to the Future (the original) was the top movie. Tim Wakefield was about to join the Florida Tech baseball team, while Doug Flutie finished his collegiate career with a Cotton Bowl win, and da Chicago Bears Super Bowl shuffled their way into the NFL s record books. NASA peaked at nine space shuttle launches in 1985, an operational tempo not seen before or since. The Space Coast was busy and times were good. Brevard was home to 222,000 fewer people the equivalent of today s Palm Bay, West Melbourne, Titusville, Cocoa, Rockledge, Cocoa Beach, Satellite Beach and Indialantic combined and roads that are now four and six-lanes were quieter neighborhood streets, if they existed at all. Much has changed, for our community and for us all, in the last 30 years. One constant, since its 1985 inception, has been LEAD Brevard s contribution to the development of our community s leaders and as host to the conversations that have driven Brevard County forward. 2014-15 has been a prototypical successful year for our solid and healthy organization. Our Leadership Brevard class of 55 committed community leaders has thrived all year, learning and sharing and creating personal bonds that will last a lifetime. The value of the Leadership Brevard experience is without dispute, as class members who are in their first year or third decade of Brevard County residency have remarked to me this year how much they ve learned about our community, how it functions, and the people who lead it. The Class of 2015 joins an extended family of more than 1,000 graduates since the undisputed First Class Ever of 1986. LEAD Brevard s Leadership Awards are recognized and coveted. It was a delight, earlier this year, to learn more about each of our 4 Under 40 finalists and acknowledge the tremendous positive impacts on our community made by Rob Rains, 2015 Leadership Brevard Distinguished Alumni award recipient, and Joe Duda, our 2015 Rodney S. Ketcham Leadership Icon award recipient. We continued to host our annual Community Stakeholder Summit featuring Brevard County manager Stockton Whitten and a panel of business leaders as they discussed the impact of change in their industries among a number of opportunities to network and learn more about the Space Coast. So, as we acknowledge the past and celebrate the present, we also must look to the future. This year, LEAD Brevard launched its Scholarship Fund, hosted and managed by the Community Foundation for Brevard, and provided it with seed funding. I expect this fund will be a consideration for gifts, minor and major, from Leadership Brevard alumni and our corporate and philanthropic communities who wish to ensure that our established legacy of helping to develop Brevard County s future leaders and of hosting critical conversations will be cemented into place with some measure of financial security. Please consider a gift to the Fund this year. It s been a fast two years as Chairman of the Board. I can t thank enough all of our volunteer board of directors and the amazing work performed by the dynamic duo of Kristin Bakke and Kristen Klein to produce the high quality programs we all enjoy. Chairman of the Board of Directors Milo Zonka, LB 2005 says This fund represents the culmination of many dedicated community leaders efforts as volunteers over the last 30 years. The LEAD Brevard Foundation Fund will assure that LEAD Brevard can provide a forum for critical leadership learning and candid community discussions far into the future. Building an endowment fund ensures that the leadership of the future will have the opportunity to participate in and benefit from the connections that are part of every Leadership Brevard class. A gift to the LEAD Brevard Endowment Fund is a pool of capital that is self-perpetuating. Donations are combined and invested to maximize returns while preserving capital. In this way, we are building an important legacy that will enable us to respond to emerging community needs.
