3 Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning. The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis. Page 1
4 Description of the School Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves? Space Coast started as a Middle School in 1995 under the leadership of Mr. William Graves, Space Coast's first principal. The school transitioned to a Junior/Senior High School in 2002 and graduated its first class in Mr. Robert Spinner became Space Coast's second principal in the fall of 2004 and is currently serving as principal of. Space Coast is located in Brevard County, Florida. Brevard County borders the Atlantic Ocean and spans 1,557 square miles. With 82 schools, 20 special centers, and 10 charter schools, the district educates over 73,000 students in 17 different municipalities across the Space Coast. Brevard Public School's goal is to serve our community and enhance students' lives by delivering the highest quality education in a culture of dedication, collaboration, and learning. is located in Port St John, an unincorporated area between Cocoa and Titusville, Florida. We are home to approximately 1,500 students: 77% White, 7% Black, 7% Hispanic, 7% Multi-racial and 2% Asian, Indian, or Islander. Space Coast is 18.4 miles from Kennedy Space Center. Due to recent lay-offs in the space industry, enrollment has declined. The good news is we have steadily increased our enrollment from 1,438 students in to 1,491 students in Since the school year, Space Coast has earned an A school grade except for which we received a B. The faculty at Space Coast is a dedicated, enthusiastic team of educators focused on delivering the highest quality instruction possible in order to help maximize student achievement. Space Coast seeks to provide a holistically balanced educational experience to prepare students to achieve their future college, career, and personal goals. Page 2

Purpose - 's purpose is to be an accelerator for our students and an engine of growth for our community. Mission - Our mission is to engage all students in activities designed to promote critical thinking and decision making emphasizing the educational values of rigor, relevance, responsibility, and relationships. Vision - Space Coast Junior/Senior High is committed to produce educated, informed citizens ready to contribute to a global society prepared for the challenges of the 21st century. Page 3
6 Notable Achievements and Areas of Improvement Describe the school's notable achievements and areas of improvement in the last three years. Additionally, describe areas for improvement that the school is striving to achieve in the next three years. has many programs that have brought great esteem to our school. Viper Accelerated Program (VAP): -The VAP program began in the school year with our incoming 7th and 8th graders. This program is by application only. Student must be in advanced classes that require a very demanding course load preparing them for high school advanced placement courses and AP Diploma was the first VAP ninth grade class was the first VAP graduating class (12 students). All students except one had achieved either the Advanced Placement Diploma, Associate of Arts or both. We had one senior who received a full scholarship to the University of Illinois. -For the school year, we already have three students with the AP diploma qualifications. Science Research: -In the past three years we have had three projects go to State Fair. -About 45 students with 30 projects enter each year. -About 1/3 of our students place at the regional fair. -For the school year , we had one student who received a $60,000 scholarship to Florida Institute of Technology. Performing Arts: Drama -For the Space Coast had 22 out of 24 Solo and Ensemble District 11 Thespian Competition entries receive an excellent or superior medal for their performances. Five out of five students received medals at the State competition. Art -November 2014 Space Coast Art Festival, Space Coast had one 1st place, one 2nd place, and three who earned merit awards. -March 2015 School Board Art Show, Space coast had one 1st place winner in 2D art grades April 2015 Congressional Art Award, Space Coast had one student receive Honorable mention. -April 2015 Melbourne Art Festival, Space Coast received the following awards: One 1st and one 2nd place in 7th/8th Grade Graphic Art, one 3rd place in 7th/8th Grade Ceramics, one 2nd place in High School Painting, one 1st place in High School Graphic Art, and one Best of Show. Music -February 28, 2013 our Concert and Women's Choir (60 students) and Beginning Chorus (23 students) received a Superior rating at the Florida Vocal Association District Music Performance Assessments. -February 27, 2014 our Beginning Chorus (Space Coast Singers, and Concert/Women's Choir received a Superior rating at the Florida Vocal Association District Music Performance Assessments. -March 16, 2014 our Orchestra received a Superior rating at the Florida Orchestra Association District Music Performance Assessments. -March 9, 2015 our Concert Choir received a Superior rating at the Florida Vocal Association District Music Performance Assessments. Teaching Assistant -For the past two years, Space Coast has had 100% pass rate on the Para Professional Exam for students taking Teaching Assistant 3. In , all but one students passed the Para Professional Exam. HVAC -Summer of 2015, three students did a joint internship in HVAC with CTE and Brevard County School Plant Operations HVAC. Two students has continued the internship into the school year. Space Coast is expecting to increase to eight internships for summer For school year, two students went to UNOH for HVAC degrees. -Every student leaving the HVAC program in 2015 earned their EPA 608 Universal Certification. -One student earned the Construction Career Days $1,000 scholarship from HVAC class in Business Software -The percentage of students passing the Microsoft Office Bundle has increased over the past three years , we had 30 students with 1% passing rate , we had 60 students with 3% passing rate , we had 35 students with a 87% passing rate. Algebra 1 EOC: In the school year, Space Coast students made the highest gains on the Algebra 1 EOC in Brevard County. Our pass rate in the school year was 59% and last year, school year , 81% of our students passed the Algebra 1 EOC. Purple Pride Program: For the past three years, Space Coast has offered a program (Purple Pride) to all incoming 7th grade students to help reduce anxiety of starting a new school year in a new environment. Students come in on a Saturday before school starts and participate in activities that get them acclimated to Space Coast. Associate of Arts Degree: For the past three years Space Coast has increased the number of students graduating with their Associate of Arts (AA) Degree. For , Space Coast had 7 AA graduates, AA graduates, and AA graduates. Scholarships: -For the school year, Space Coast graduating class received $161,800 in scholarships. -For the school year, Space Coast graduating class received $70,750 in scholarships. -For the school year, Space Coast graduating class received $137,000 in scholarships. 8 Advanced Placement Diploma: school year, three seniors received the Advanced Placement Diploma school year, one senior received the Advanced Placement Diploma school year, one senior received the Advanced Placement Diploma Areas for Improvement: Data has revealed some concerns with student achievement. In looking at Math, English/Language Arts, Science, and History, across the grade levels, several students failed one or more classes. We would like to reduce the number of students who are failing Math, English, Science, and History, which will in turn reduce the number of students facing retention. For the next three years Space Coast will decrease number of students failing MESH subjects by increasing academic engagement time through standards-based instruction using Understanding by Design, Literacy Design Collaborative, or other lesson planning designs that includes planning with the end in mind. In 2014, Space Coast had 150 students in AP classes, taking 233 tests, with a pass rate of 60%. This score was about 7% higher than the rest of the students in Florida, and only one percent lower than AP students globally. In 2015, however, there were only 128 Space Coast students, taking 187 tests, with a pass rate of When comparing Space Coast's pass rate to Florida students, we were lower by 3%, and a global comparison shows that we are now 9% lower. Over the next three years we want to increase the number of students who are taking and passing AP courses. We will do this by sharing the information about each course with students and parents during High School and Middle School Nights, as well as inform all teachers about the courses that we offer at Space Coast. Additionally, we want to adjust our AP Science courses to be offered every year instead of rotating the schedule bi-yearly. Finally, have students explore the College Board AP site. This site offers an overview, course description and practice tests for each AP course and students have access to Explore AP. Page 6
9 Additional Information Provide any additional information you would like to share with the public and community that were not prompted in the previous sections. For the school year, Space Coast has gained an Emotional Behavior Disability (EBD) unit. Students often find it difficult to control their behavior and work as productive members of a classroom. They commonly lack the impulse control and the emotional balance that is necessary to handle social interactions with other students effectively. Our teachers are trained professionals who use effective strategies in an inclusive classroom to help with behavioral issues. In the school year, Space Coast gained a Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) unit. This serves the DHH students in the community. They interact with the hearing student population in an effective manner. For the school year. Space Coast welcomed it's first Deaf instructor. She is an inspiration to our DHH students because she shows even with a handicap you can overcome adversity. Starting with the school year, students will have the opportunity to earn an AP Capstone Diploma or AP Seminar and Research Certificate. This will help foster the research, argumentation, and communication skills that are at the core of college readiness and essential for lifelong learning. Page 7
