Dear Kinship Caregiver, This guide was created as a resource for Kinship families residing in San Diego County by the YMCA Kinship Program. It is a list of agencies and programs, which address issues commonly faced by Kinship families and is organized first by need and then by region of the county that is served. Please see the table of contents on the next page for a complete list of need topics and corresponding page numbers. The YMCA Kinship Program provides services to relative caregivers throughout San Diego County. The mission of the Kinship program is: To support to kinship caregivers throughout San Diego County in achieving safety, permanency, and well-being for their families through education, advocacy and community collaboration. The Kinship Program offers a variety of services including: Kinship Navigator Services: - Assessment of family needs - Information and referral - Education - Advocacy - Short-term case management Case Management Services (more intensive services for families involved in the child welfare system) Respite Service (for caregivers who are 55 and older) In addition to the Kinship Program, the YMCA of San Diego County offers many community and social services through the programs in the Youth and Family Services and Childcare Resource Service departments as well as at the 14 branch sites (swim and gym facilities) located throughout the county. Both voluntary relinquishments as well as adoptions of children from the foster care system are handled by the agency, which is staffed by professional social workers. Adult/Elder Abuse Adult Protective Services (800) 510-2020 http://www.sdcounty.ca.gov Serves adults 65 and older and dependent adults 18 and older, who are harmed, or threatened with harm, to ensure their right to safety and dignity. APS investigates elder and dependent adult abuse, including cases of neglect and abandonment, as well as physical, sexual and financial abuse. After-School Programs The best way to apply for before and after school care for your child is to call the child's school directly and ask if they offer a free or low-cost after school program. At-Risk Youth (Countywide) Alliance for Community Empowerment (ACE) (800) ACE-9458 A partnership of community organizations working together to address the effects of community violence, strengthen the family, and empower the community. ACE offers: mobile response teams, gang awareness, strengthening families, and a leadership academy. Services are offered free of charge throughout San Diego County.
