Provide leadership, management and direction for the staffing and operations for the $31,500,000 UNT Student Recreation Center, a 138,000 sq ft recreation center, opened Fall, 2003. Responsible for a combined operating budget of $5 million with 17 full time staff, and over 400 part time student employees and 30+ volunteers. Approve all financial transactions for programs, including purchases and cash handling procedures. Direct and approve area and facility scheduling for 3 facilities and 18 acres of field space. Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate 16 full time staff members. Develop job responsibilities and planning guides for new employees. Direct policy development for 7 programs. Direct budget preparation and management processes, including the organization of the annual budget request and presentation to the Student Service Fee Committee. Provide liaison with university and non-university processes. Direct assessments and evaluations for 7 programs, including participation statistics, semester and annual reports, satisfaction surveys, advisory committees, and suggestion forms, and report results to Dean of Students and Vice President for Student Development. Oversee area and facility management related to Recreational Sports Programs, including approving all work orders for repairs and projects. Direct public relations and marketing for 7 programs. Conduct revenue generation for programs. Direct strategic planning for Recreational Sports programs and facilities. Prepare annual report, listing accomplishments, actions toward achievement of University Initiatives and progress toward University Planning themes, report to Dean of Students and to the Director for Research and Planning to include in the Student Development annual report. Represent unit in Dean of Students staff weekly meetings. Represent unit on 3 university committees. Serve as representative of Dean of Students on university committees in his absence. Direct projects for facility expansion and development. Successfully organized the move of all staff and offices into the Student Recreation Center, resulting in the Student Recreation Center opening on time; organized a sneak preview for faculty and staff for the Student Recreation Center prior to opening; directed the planning, purchase and installation of all furniture, fixtures and equipment in the Student Recreation Center; directed Recreational Sports staff through all phases of construction; represented Recreational Sports at meetings attended by architects and construction staff, where decisions were made on construction of the Student Recreation Center; developed a business plan which included staffing, programs, policies and fees to the Vice President for Student Development, resulting in approval of all staff and programs; presented justification to hire a consultant for the planning and development of a student recreation center to UNT Vice President for Administrative Affairs, resulting in the hiring of the consultant; researched fees at Texas universities, including recreation fees, membership fees, and income generation, reporting the results to the Vice President for Student Development, based on the results, $75 was chosen as the recreation fee for UNT; designed a Student Recreation opinion survey with a team consisting of the UNT Planning Officer, and the UNT Associate Director for Marketing, to assess student opinions on activities in a potential Student Recreation Center; distributed the survey to approximately 1000 students with the assistance of the Recreational Sports staff, presented the results to UNT Vice Presidents, resulting in the approval to include most of what students said they wanted in the new Student Recreation Center; assisted in conducting a focus group of approximately 35 students with the UNT Associate Director for Marketing to assess student opinions on the Student Recreation Center; organized the Recreational Sports staff to conduct a marketing campaign which included presentations to over 30 student organizations, encouraging students to vote in the referendum for a student recreation center, resulting in over 70% of students approving a $75 student recreation fee; represented Recreational Sports on the team of administrators and students who presented the Student Recreation Fee bill to the Texas State Legislature, which resulted in approval of the bill; designed and implemented a fee for students from the UNT Health Science system to use UNT facilities; provided leadership for the Recreational Sports staff and worked with the UNT Planning office, to design the first needs assessment at UNT to evaluate student involvement in Recreational Sports; organized the Recreational Sports staff in the distribution of the assessment to approximately 1,000 students, reported the results of the assessment to the Vice President of Student Affairs and to the Chancellor, which resulted in demonstrating student recreation and fitness needs were not met and that the majority of students would use a dedicated student recreation facility if one was constructed at UNT; assisted Student Association in the design of a survey to assess student opinions on a fee for a Student Recreation Center; organized Recreational Sports staff in requesting budget increases, resulting in an increase from Student Service fees for programs and student wages; increased the staff by requesting and receiving additional Student Service Fee funds for an Associate Director and one additional full time staff member, and 3 graduate assistants; planned and designed a $500,000 Recreational Sports complex with 13 acres of lighted field space for Intramural programs; presented the need for space for the Faculty Staff Fitness program to the UNT Facilities Planning Committee, resulting in the approval of new space; established cash handling procedures, with UNT Auditors;; provided leadership to establish a marketing plan, and with the Recreational Sports staff, organized an outreach program and increased the publicity to include calendar, fliers, brochures, video and web site. ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF RECREATIONAL SPORTS, 1986-1993, University of North Texas Directed 3 programs including Sport Clubs, Recreational Instruction, and Faculty Staff Golf Programs. Directed 18-20 Sport clubs activities, approved schedules and budgets for equipment and travel expenses, and monitored sport club fund raising, sponsorships and promotions. Trained, supervised and evaluated 15-20 student volunteer leaders. Recruited, trained, supervised and evaluated 1 graduate student and 10 part-time student employees for Recreational Instruction program. Planned and directed the Faculty Staff Golf Programs, including leagues and tournaments. RECREATIONAL SPORTS GRADUATE ASSISTANT, 1976-1978, University of Iowa Organized intramural program, scheduled and supervised officials and events. Supervised recreational facilities and assisted with publicity and promotions. Performed a marketing campaign for cross country ski rentals, which resulted in UI starting a program of rental for cross country skis; planned an outdoor program, including bicycling and cross country ski clinics and trips; assisted in the solicitation of sponsorships for Intramurals, which resulted in McDonalds restaurant funding the cost of the Intramural championship shirts; designed a feasibility study for charging for the UI tennis courts and designed a tennis center, reported those results to the Director of Recreational Sports and to the UI administration, resulting in the construction of the UI tennis center; designed and implemented an assessment for sources of information for Recreational Services, reported results to the Director for Recreational Services, resulting in increased awareness of the need for a marketing plan.
