OT- Med: Objec,va Terra - Mediterraneum Joël Guiot

Context The OT- Med Labex has been defined in this context q The Mediterranean Basin has been a key area of human- environment interac@ons for thousands of years, inducing a large diversity of cultures and ecosystems q It is at the interface of temperate and tropical climates, with large popula@on densi@es and high seismicity q Several labs of the Aix- Marseille University have an ac@ve role in the meta- programme MISTRALS, launched by CNRS/IRD to s@mulate studies dedicated to Mediterranean

Objec, ves q To coordinate and s@mulate research on human environment interac@ons in Mediterranean ecosystems, accoun@ng for ecosystem func@oning, biodiversity and socio- economics q To iden@fy and evaluate innova@ve strategies to help decision- making by opening up environmental, economic and social opportuni@es for sustainability... q To increase the interna@onal visibility of regional research in this domain q To establish an interdisciplinary centre for environment and sustainable development in the Mediterranean Basin and arid regions (Sahel), with a focus on climate, natural hazards and associated risks

Implementa,on q Research: s@mulate interdisciplinarity and collabora@on between labs build a bridge between geo- physico- biological and human- social sciences design an integrated approach to drive decision- making q Training: our students: at the master, doctoral and post- doctoral levels atract excellent interna@onal students and researchers (especially from Mediterranean countries) q Connec@on to the socio- economical world: communica@on, transfer of knowledge common projects (Pôles de compé--vité, local governments, NGOs...)

Units Disciplines and key words Authori,es CEREGE Terrestrial and marine geosciences, paleoclimatology, seismology, coastlines, geomorphology, climatology, hydro(geo)logy AMU, CNRS, IRD, Coll.Fr ECCOREV All AMU, CNRS GREQAM Environment economics AMU, EHESS, CNRS MIO IMBE The consor,um Marine geosciences: physics, biogeochemistry, ecology, resources, contamina@ons ecology, terrestrial and marine biodiversity ecosystem services, paleoecology, land use, conserva@on AMU, CNRS, IRD, U.Toulon AMU, CNRS, IRD, U. Three work packages 1. Understand and evaluate impacts of climate changes and natural hazards in Mediterranean 2. Assess the services provided by the Mediterranean ecosystems to society 3. Human- environmental interac@ons: percep@on, adapta@on and mi@ga@on

Two transverse work packages 1. The observa@on systems and databases: data for the scien@fic community, public and modelling 2. Toward an integrated modelling of the Mediterranean systems: a excellent tool for understand and projec@ons into the future

Training ac,vi,es q Recep@on of visi@ng researchers, post- docs and Ph.D. fellows, and exchanges with all the Mediterranean countries q Support par@cipa@on of our young scien@sts to interna@onal symposia and workshops q Organise workshops, summer schools and conferences q Interdisciplinary exchanges and training with Master and Doctoral level programmes, with par@cular emphasis on North African and Near East countries

Transfer to the society q Science communica@on to the public, conferences, website q Share projects with private partners, NGOs etc. q Reference portal of exper@se: document archives, databanks, scien@fic informa@on on climate change and natural risks q Scien@fic support for both local and na@onal governments, pôles de compé--vité, businesses and NGOs q Stronger stakeholder involvement in scien@fic projects
