BIENVENIDOS! FOREWORD This manual and accompanying CD s are designed to be simple, effective communication tools for speaking with Hispanic patients and their families in nursing and hospital situations. Workplace Spanish materials are tools for basic communication, not academic materials for learning the language of Spanish in the traditional manner. Our materials do not include grammar, verb conjugations, language rules, etc. We developed Workplace Spanish to help adults communicate, simply but effectively, at work, in Spanish! Our job-specific programs use bite-size terms and phrases, easy phonetic pronunciations, and carefully selected expressions that can be learned today and used tomorrow. No prior Spanish experience is necessary! If you wish to learn the language of Spanish in a more traditional way, there are a multitude of fine textbooks and audio programs available. You should know though, that achieving proficiency in any language typically takes from 4 to 6 years. Not many adults can devote that amount of time to learning Spanish that s why we developed Workplace Spanish. An alternative that will help you communicate in a health care environment. PROGRAM OBJECTIVES 1. To introduce you to atin American Spanish language and pronunciation. 2. To help you learn, pronounce, and use medical expressions ------- in Spanish. 3. To build your confidence to Say it in Spanish ----- so you can communicate with Hispanic patients and their families in a basic but effective manner. BENEFITS YOU CAN ACHIEVE Higher quality health care to Hispanic clients and citizens Better communication between medical staff, patients and families Clearer instructions and explanations from doctors & nurses Fewer misunderstandings, confusion and frustration Important: be sure to use a qualified bilingual person for serious questions and explanations with Spanish-speaking patients and their families. 2001-6 Workplace Spanish, Inc.
