Report of Top Administrator in Independent Secondary Schools December 17, 2007

Table of Contents I. I. Background This Report is based on information compiled to provide Boston College High School with competitive compensation information on the top administrator positions in independent secondary schools. This Report provides detailed information by school and position collected from the public records (990 tax forms) filed by independent schools in Massachusetts. In addition, this report contains confidential data on four schools that are not required to file 990 tax forms because of their religious affiliation. The salary information from the 990 tax forms is reported by school and functional title for 13 positions since it is public data, while independent school information was collected confidentially on their top four to five positions and is only reported in aggregate. If you should have any questions about this report or would like any assistance with your compensation program, please contact Susan Malanowski at The Wilson Group. Phone: 978-371-0476 ext 109 Email: smalanowski@wilsongroup.com il Website: www.wilsongroup.com 3

I. Background Data Analysis: The data is reported at the 25th, 50th and 75th percentiles. Percentiles define the value below which a given percentage of data fall. For example, if a salary survey shows $60,000 as the value at the 90th percentile, then 90 percent of survey respondents pay below $60,000 and 10 percent of survey respondents pay above $60,000. The data point at the 50th percentile is the same as the median. The most notable difference in salaries is based on size of school with number of faculty being the best scope data to use. As a result, we have reported the data based on the following cuts: o All participants o Schools with 60 or less faculty o Schools with more than 60 faculty 4

I. Background Job Matching Guidelines: Jobs were matched or grouped to job categories based solely on title reported. The Headmaster and Head of School titles were examined closely to ensure the proper match. The head of the school or highest position in a school has varying titles Headmaster, Head of School, President, etc. The Principal is usually called Principal, Headmaster or Head of Upper and Lower Schools. Because of the mixed use of the headmaster title, each of the schools that used this title were examined to make sure we clearly differentiated between the head of the school and the principal. Functional roles such as development and finance were not differentiated based on the title the school assigned Director, Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, Accountant, etc. This is because each of these titles have different meanings and use at various schools. We assumed if a job was one of the top paid jobs in the school to be reported and paid highly for that t school, it was worthy to include in a functional match. 5

I. Background Process: Four independent high schools with religious affiliation provided annual salary information on their top four administrators. This data is reported in aggregate to maintain confidentiality. Public data of five highest paid positions in 49 independent secondary schools without religious affiliation (except Central Catholic was available) was collected from 990 tax forms and positions matched or combined into similar functional jobs. The effective date of the data has been aged to the 2007-2008 school year. The available 990 data consisted of tax years 2005 and 2006. The salary data was adjusted by 5.0% annually in order to have current salary information, however, benefit and expense data was not aged. 6
