Math 1314 Online Syllabus ( College Algebra) Instructor: Dr. Lee Topham This online College Algebra course runs 7 days a week with no holidays. I am online every day and will have my laptop with me if out of town. Don t hesitate to send me an E-mail in D2L when you have a question. If the question involves a quiz or test problem in WebAssign, all I need is the quiz and problem number. I am able to see your responses, the time you logged in and also the time you spend on each question. I will work the problem, scan it to a PDF file, and E-mail a reply in D2L. Course title: College Algebra Course : Math 1314 Course Outcomes: You will be able to solve quadratic, rational, and absolute value equations. You will be able to graph functions and their inverses. You will be able to work with applications of exponential and logarithmic equations. You will be able to solve systems of linear equations. 1

(ASSIGNMENTS ARE NOT TURNED IN) The learning management system used by the college is called Desire to Learn(D2L) Each week the software will open the assignment at 5pm on Monday and close the assignment at 5pm on the following Monday. The new assignment will be visible as the previous weeks assignment closes. You will have the ability to look at past assignments in WebAssign when studying for a Test. You can contact me at any time through D2L mail if you have a questions. I can work out a problem and E-mail it back to you. 3

Testing: 1) Each week you will be required to take a quiz on each textbook section assigned using the WebAssign software. Each quiz will be about 5 problems similar to the assigned homework. You will have 45 minutes from the time you login to the quiz to submit your answers. 2) There will be 4 tests during the semester and the last test is not comprehensive. Each test will have about 20 problems similar to the quiz questions. You will have two (2) hours from your first login to submit the test in WebAssign. 3) When you are ready to take a weekly quiz or test you can login at http://www.webassign.net/login.html. All testing is entirely online. System Requirements for WebAssign Browsers: Mozilla Firefox, version 12 or later. Microsoft Internet Explorer, version 9 or later. Browser Settings: Allow cookies from www.webassign.net Allow Pop-ups from www.webassign.net For security, do NOT allow your browser to store your WebAssign password. Browser Plug-ins Required: Adobe Acrobat Reader, version 8 or later. Adobe Flash Player, version 11 or later. Adobe Shockwave Player, version 11 or later. Java, version 6(build 1.6.0) or later. 4

Evaluation: The Webassign software only allows for fill-in-the-blank submissions of answers. Each submission will be counted as one point by the WebAssign software. If a question has three parts, it will be valued at three points. You can see your grade at anytime by clicking on GRADE at the top of the WebAssign homepage and the My Scores Summary at the bottom of the page. WebAssign will show your score on Quizzes and Tests separately. If you add these and divide by the Maximum Possible for quizzes and tests you will be able to compute your score. Your scores are updated each week at 5pm on Monday. The course is not setup for extra credit or make-ups. Course grade: The WebAssign software will sum all points earned on the weekly quizzes and chapter tests. The final course grade will follow the schedule below. I also keep a record of your scores so if there is a question don t hesitate to send me an E-mail in Angel. (A) = 90% - 100% (B) = 80% - 89% (C) = 70% - 79% (D) = 60% - 69% (F) < 60% 5

Withdrawal Policy: If for some reason you need to withdraw from the course, send me a request through Mail or my office E-mail at lee.j.topham@lonestar.edu. You may be dropped from the course if you fail to login to WebAssign for more than two weeks. If you enrolled as a first-time student during the Fall of 2007 you are limited to a maximum of six(6) dropped courses at Texas public institutions of higher education. Academic Integrity: The college has taken a zero tolerance policy on plagiarism, collusion, cheating, etc. Do your own work and contact me if you need help. Anyone found cheating can be disciplined from a zero on an assignment to an F in the course. Computer Virus Protecton: The college has aggressive anti-virus procedures in place protect its computers. It is your responsibility to protect computers under your control to ensure that each diskette has been scanned with anti-virus software. Keeping backups is extremely important.
