What is Network Monitoring and Diagnostics? Network Monitoring A system that is constantly monitoring networks and devices on the networks. Looking for network problems and creates reports and trends. Looks at response time, availability and uptime. Network administrator is notified via Email, SMS or other alarms. Network Diagnostics Protocols analyzers that monitors what is being sent and received. Software for monitoring messages from devices. Hardware relays from devices that trigger when error occurs. Network monitoring systems can display diagnostics. Page 2
Why is Network Monitoring and Diagnostics so important? Detect outages and slow or failing systems. Monitor performance and usage of a network. Benefits are increased productivity. Pease of mind, that all is well. Page 3
Where do I start? First we need to connect! Types of Industrial Switches and Benefits Unmanaged verses Managed Switches What are the advantages of a managed switch? Once we are connected we can : Introduction to Diagnostic Tools Web pages of device Network protocol analyzers SNMP Protocol and MIB browsers Network Management System Software Page 4
Types of Industrial Ethernet Switches Unmanaged Switch: Allows Ethernet devices to connect, usually the device connects automatically. Simply receives frames from one device and passes them on. LED Indicators show connections to ports of the switch. Low cost Industrial quality. Simple Ethernet Bus and Star topologies can be configured. Managed Switch: Basically a smart switch. Added advanced features. Ability to configure and manage network. More expensive then unmanaged switches. Monitor statuses of all devices connected to the switch. Redundancy via ring topology and ring manager. Page 5
Detailed Features of a Managed Switch Status LEDs indicate a connection at the switch. Qos (helps to provide determinism) Trunking (2 or more ports are group together to act as one port) VLANs ( Group Devices to isolate networks) Port mirroring Diagnostic feature Fault relaying Diagnostic feature IGMP snooping (Broadcast,Multicast control) Redundancy (Automatic switch over) SNMP Diagnostic feature Future-proofing ( Ready for new devices) WEB base management Diagnostic feature Diagnostic feature Lets discuss the diagnostic features in detail Page 6
Let s talk about the managed switches' diagnostics LEDs on the switch Fault Relaying PORT Mirroring The following errors/faults can be signaled by the signaling contact: The loss and the establishment of a link on a monitored port. The failure of one of the two redundant power supplies. The loss of the connection to the controller in PROFINET IO mode. The redundancy manager signals an error An incompatible C-PLUG was inserted. Page 7
Diagnostics using SNMP feature built into managed devices on a network What is SNMP Protocol? Simple Network Management Protocol Queries determine health and status of a device via software. Displays data that is easy to understand. Uses files called MIBs Management Information Base. Allows quick detection of network problems or health. Allows the capability to update firmware of the device. Page 8 One of many tools for monitoring MIBs
Diagnostics using SNMP what do you get? What are some facts about MIBs? If a component of a network device isn't described in the MIB, it doesn't exist. You need a SNMP network manager to read the MIBs. When an SNMP device sends a Trap or other message, it identifies each data object in the message with a number string called an object identifier, or OID. The MIB file provides a text label or pointer called for each OID The SNMP manager decodes the OID numbers into something in text we can understand and read. Page 9
Who uses MIBS and SNMP Protocol? SNMP is used by: Routers Servers Switches Printers Workstations Modems racks Video cameras IP telephones IP Sensors Profinet devices(simatic ET200S) Simatic S7 300/400 CPs Soft PLC Win AC/LC with CP SNMP Managed Network consists of: Managed device. Agent (Software that runs on managed device) Network management system (NMS) - software that runs on the manager. There are many Management Tools available to access MIB information. Just a few devices that support SNMP for diagnostics. Page 10
Where do I find MIB files? Go to managed device WEB site for MIBs Go to mibdepot.com Google/ BING the Device name, MIB file. WEB sites for downloading MIB files from venders Page 11

Summarize Major Advantages with Managed Switch Managed switch provides monitoring and diagnostics. Many tools are available to access information from a network. Less downtime due to diagnostics. More productivity due to uptime. Future proof for new devices. Let s now look at some other tools we can use to diagnose networks: Network Protocol analyzer Web base management: Page 13

Diagnostics and Monitoring using PLC Software Most PLC manufactures have diagnostics built into their software. Network views in online mode. Topology view shows connections at the port level. PLC s can also read MIB files of a device in. Page 22
Now we will use Diagnostics in PLC Editor Software Topology tool built into PLC configuration software All devices in network Table view Passive components Page 23

Network Management Software (NMS) We have covered some of the tools/ protocols for diagnostics and monitoring, now let s tie them all together with a Network Management System (NMS) One software package to manage and diagnose all networks. allows you to Monitor all devices and all networks. Easy diagnostics, find problems quickly. Allows you to organize your networks. Enable a online graphic view of everything on the network. NMS uses the SNMP Protocol to get detailed information of a device. Page 26
Network Management Software Sinema Server V12 Network Manager JPG export Troubleshooting tools Automatic device detection Simple network visualization Report and export function Gives you an up-to-date and complete documentation of your networks Automatically generated topology view CSV export Page 27
Network Management Software Devices Broken connection Troubleshooting Advantages of NMS: Simple presentation of the network Simple structuring of devices in userspecific views User specific views makes it easy to troubleshoot Automatic topology detection and visualization Select view Office or Plant floor? Network Management Software Monitoring Current status overview. Errors which occurred in the past are documented in the message list. Evaluation of device availability within reports. Easy to understand status overview Event log keeps you informed anytime 24/7/365 You re alerted to new devices and network errors during plant operation. Page 29

SNMP Alarms and events can be modified Events / Traps can be modified and created Event class can be chosen Page 34
To Summarize all that we covered today It is important to monitor and have diagnostics of your network A managed switch provides access, diagnostics, and monitoring of the network. Most managed devices support SNMP protocol to provide detailed information. There are tools like Wireshark, MIB Browser, and Sinema Server available to help troubleshoot your networks.
