1 RUGGEDCOM NMS is fully-featured enterprise grade network management software based on the OpenNMS platform. Specifically for the rugged communications industry, RNMS provides a comprehensive platform for monitoring, configuring, and maintaining mission-critical IP-based communications networks, such as those found in substation automation and Smart Grids for electric utilities, intelligent transportation systems, and advanced control and automation for industrial processes. RUGGEDCOM NMS Features Product Features: Centralized management and monitoring of network and networked devices to achieve desired level of network availability performance and operational efficiency Greater network visibility to enable proactive corrective actions and improved capacity utilization Web based UI with graphical network view Configurable auto discovery and polling subsystem Rich set of pre-packaged reports Event handling via polling and SNMP trap support Interfaces for equipment configuration via external applications such as Web Browser and TELNET Supports the use of SNMP v1, v2c and v3 (SNMP Security) Automated Network Traffic Monitoring (NetMON) allows administrators to monitor traffic at the port level. Web Based User Interface Customizable Dashboard per customer requirements Easy navigation to events and nodes with issues View and edit Asset information Multiple report selections Administration and configuration of many parts of RNMS Automated Network Discovery Discovers all the devices on a network or devices in a selected range of IP addresses through ICMP pings Once a device is discovered RNMS will start polling the discovered devices on a configurable time basis Discovers and displays links; active, down and blocked Uses LLDP information to quickly map network links. Polling The polling sub-system is used to monitor all discovered devices Through the use of device polling, SNMP MIB data will be captured, stored in a database and presented in reports If communications to a device is lost the polling sub-system will intelligently attempt to re-establish communications Scalable, Distributed Architecture Real-time monitoring and calculation of availability of services such as SNMP, SSH, Telnet and HTTP Provides clear and concise view of services right from the main screen and on each node screen Monitor and Report Interface Statistics The NMS pollers can be centrally or remotely deployed to reduce network traffic The central data retention and reporting system is able to communicate with multiple pollers The Web interface and database can be deployed on different machines Events Tiered event Notification (Critical, Major, Minor, Warning, Indeterminate, Normal, Cleared) Notifications based on any event (nodeup/nodedown, service Up/serviceDown, SNMP traps, thresholds, etc.) can be generated Display the events currently in the database via the web-based User Interface Notifications can be sent via . Reports View pre-defined graphs of the various data obtained by the RNMS Data Collection features (including Response Times) Create ad-hoc graphs on arbitrary collected data values using a simple web-gui Reports in a graphical format can be generated on the fly Historical information will be included in the reports for comparison and decision making purposes Monitor Availability Quick detection of network failures at the port and RUGGEDCOM device levels ISO 9001 REGISTERED RNMS 1

9 NMS SNMP Overview MIB AGENT MANAGER SNMP MIB AGENT Hub MIB AGENT MIB MIB AGENT AGENT Workstation The RUGGEDCOM NMS Server queries the SNMP capable devices through polling, gathers the responses to the requested information, and places the information in a usable, easy to view and utilize format. SNMP supports alarms and events, which are proactively sent by the SNMP agents on monitored SNMP devices to alert the network management server of issues or events that have occurred or are occurring. SNMP - Simple Network Management Protocol The primary standard way for management stations to access, gather and configure IP capable devices Forms part of the internet protocol suite as defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). SNMP is used in network management systems to monitor network-attached devices for conditions that warrant administrative attention. It consists of a set of standards for network management, including an Application Layer protocol, a database schema, and a set of data objects. SNMP exposes management data in the form of variables on the managed systems, which describe the system configuration. These variables can then be queried (and sometimes set) by managing applications. MIB- Management Information Base Individual points of data that are described with SNMP that hold data particular to a piece of information zfor example: number of unicast packets in/out, status of power supplies, enable/disable IGMP, initiate an RSTP status change zare classified as public (defined by the SNMP standard) or private (identify functions or features that are unique to the device or vendor) Code that is resident within the Ethernet switch or SNMP capable end device containing all the programmed MIBs and collects the MIB information and holds it for the Network Management to poll SNMP Server The central component of a Network management system. zthe Server acts as the polling agent for gathering information from SNMP capable devices zreceives traps and alarms from SNMP devices zmaintains historical and statistical information regarding network performance zprovides a graphical map of the network components and end devices Ping - Packet Inter-Network Groper Used to establish the presence of a device with an IP address Used as a hello or keep-alive packet for devices that do not support SNMP but are kept track of by a Network Management station RMON - Remote Monitoring (RFC 2819) A mechanism that uses MIBs to provide utilization and threshold information and can keep historical information regarding network performance RMON is comprised of 9 groups of functionality. Ethernet switches and most SNMP Ethernet end devices support 4 groups; 1,2,3 and 9: Statistics: Contains statistics measured by the probe for each monitored interface on this device. History: Records periodic statistical samples from a network and stores them for later retrieval. Alarm: Periodically takes statistical samples from variables in the probe and compares them with previously configured thresholds. If the monitored variable crosses a threshold, an event is generated. Event: Controls the generation and notification of events from this device. RNMS 9
