Accessing ios Will Wade, ACE Centre Lisa Farrand, ACE Centre What do we mean by ios? Access to idevices Direct Indirect Managing Apps Review and categorisation of apps Purchasing Installing and Managing devices Printing and dealing with documents

idevice Choices and Hardware Peripherals

What do we mean by ios The operating system ios 1.0 ios 6 The hardware Original iphone ipad (3) and iphone 5 and now ipad mini The Apps Software that transforms the device from a bookstore, to a gaming console to a medical device The peripheral hardware

Accessing idevices

Remember The Operating System is designed for touch Not Keyboard or Mouse (or Eyegaze!) What do you want do on the device? If indirect access is required is this the best device for content production? If it s a strong motivator then can it be used differently? Alongside a different platform? As a games, educational or media platform? The basics of positioning and support

Supporting Direct Access

Direct Touch Lynn Levitt

System Wide Settings System wide settings to be aware of : Text expansion (shortcuts) Settings -> Sounds Speak while you type Keyboard sounds

AssistiveTouch AssistiveTouch support those who struggle with gestures and access to hardware buttons. Also supports input devices which could control entire OS remotely (joysticks)

App Settings Some available App settings: hold to activate activate on release NB: Turning on voiceover can provide auditory cuing to many apps

Hardware Adaptationsirst things first Keyguards are available (Logan, TherapyBox, SmartBoxAT) Check your app fully first! Stylus are available (or DIY them) remember capacitive

Avoid mis-hitting home button ios 6 - Guided Access Pre-iOS 6 - Install a Profile that enables Kiosk mode Remove Un-Necessary Apps Bury un-deletable apps in a folder several pages deep Put essential apps on the dock Enable Restrictions

Alternative Access Options

Keyboards Bluetooth keyboards supported Camera Connection Kit allows Normal USB keyboards to be used Voiceover can give access to the screen. Learn more from reading the docs!

Joystick iportal From Dynamics Compatible with a range of wheelchair controllers Hopefully more soon!

Switches Switches provide one press access for individuals who have limited physical abilities or require reduced cognitive load Require a switch box (Tecla, Tbox, Switch4Apps) NB: Some switch boxes Switch accessible App that has been designed for that switch box! Confused? Two main ways of working Full device access (VoiceOver) Specific App capability (Keyboard emulation)

Switch4Apps (Keyboard) All bluetooth which means you pair them with the device APPlicator (Pretorian), Switch4Apps (Inclusive) Either set to be a key press of a keyboard or Preconfigured for music Because all of these switch boxes pretend to be keyboards they disable the normal key board. This has a button for showing it. APPS NEED TO BE ADAPTED 129

TherapyBox, Blue2, (Keyboard) TherapyBox Switch box = RJ Cooper Box Need to pair with code. Only works with set apps e.g. Predictable Auto 2 Switch Scan 89 Blue2 Switch Box. Set your keyboard command e.g. l/r arrow, 1 or 2, space or enter, l/r click Needs set apps 119

Switch2Scan (VoiceOver) Looks very similar to Switch4Apps Uses VoiceOver Commands = Access to the entire device No timed music feature Icons or items on the home screen and within most main apps are scanned with a highlight box Automatic scanning with one, two or three switches. Step scanning with four switches Four scanning speeds Full access to ibooks requires four switches Highlight not editable 139

SimplyWorks Compatible with the SimplyWorks range: Switches (SmoothTalker) Keyboard (it-keys) Joystick (it-stick) Button to show inbuilt keyboard ibooks, Music, inbuilt Keyboard, Camera integration 149

Tecla KomodoOpenLab Can build your own for free open source 17 Scan speed options Single, dual and 3 switch scanning options Onscreen keyboard scanning o Switch Access to Siri Approx 200 from Komodo

Switching Hit and Miss! Keeping a device awake You can change lock screen time but power will decrease Look at Guided Access to stop screen dimming Switch interfaces are designed for specific apps developers just making interfaces for their apps as opposed to using common standards Few scanning options

Buying idevices and Management of Apps

Some terminology itunes = The Software that organises music, and access the.. App Store = As well as buying music, films, TV programs, you can also buy.. Apps = Applications. Computer programs itunes/app Store Account = To use any online features of itunes you need an account. This is country specific and you need an address and (usually) a credit card Sync = To get your apps from your PC to your device you need to plug in a cable and synchronise the apps/music etc Gifting = You can buy an app for another itunes account (Redeem)ing = If someone has gifted you an app you will get a code from them that you redeem in the App Store

Buying Anywhere! Apple stores, but not everything and will pay extra for peripherals You can hand your cash over to third party e.g. Therapy Box to do everything for you there is of course an added cost involved!

The Rules (in short) At home: You need to buy one license of an App per itunes account and can then use that App on all of the ios devices you own or control and sync with that itunes account (up to 10 devices) Everywhere else: You need to buy one license of an App for each ios device if that device is used by multiple users, or one license of an App per user if that user is using multiple ios devices

Apple Volume Purchase Program (VPP) http://www.apple.com/uk/education/volume-purchase-program/ One designed for Education and one for Business Educational institutions can enrol in the VPP, and distribute multiple ios app codes to students, teachers, or other employees Developers can offer apps and ebooks at reduced prices when institutions buy 20 or more of the product Using the VPP: - purchaser buys apps in bulk via a web app store - purchaser receives codes - purchaser distributes codes to individuals for them to redeem - individual either downloads app using itunes/appstore or a mobile device management system (MDM) In VPP you can use purchase order

So if you are a school You can authorize a single itunes account on up to 5 computers You can then sync devices with any of these machines. But note you can get out of sync pretty rapidly if you need to restore a backup and are not using the most recently updated computer. You can have up to 5 accounts on any one device. It is therefore possible to put another employee s/students apps on another's device

Methods of Organising Multiple Devices MDM Multiple Device Management Software and Hardware solutions (http://www.enterpriseios.com/wiki/comparison_m DM_Providers) If you want to just sync multiple devices a multidocking station will help Apple Configurator: Allows finer control over groups of devices Create a device check-in/check-out setup that ensure users always have access to their on-device data regardless of whether which device they are assigned (similar to roaming profiles in a Windows business environment where users have the same desktop regardless of which PC they use) E.g. Devices for Grid Based AAC Apps, Devices for PMLD Meraki. Free. Can be used without configurator for limited functions. Will allow Pushing of apps etc

Printing and Document Management

Forget these Its all about

Document Storage Methods Email Documents can be accessible via itunes Scroll to the bottom of the Apps pane on the device. Import/Export files from each app that supports documents icloud account for each device or one for a class etc.. Documents are synced wirelessly Only within apps that support icloud (mainly Apple Apps) Dropbox Free for 2GB Syncs a folder of files/folders from one machine to another WebDAV Available in Windows and Mac. Allows you to share a Folder needs to be on your network. Not reliable Built-in Web Browser Browse for files over a network by going to a web page

Think about a workflow Accounts for one or all? An email address to send to per-class or per-year? What about security? Where are the servers for dropbox/icloud kept?

Printing AirPrint compatible printers are growing If you don t have a compatible printer you can use software on a networked machine FingerPrint AirPrintActivator Printopia NB: FingerPrint can also print when a new document added to a dropbox account.?useful when using an app that doesn t support printing All else fails: Remember screenshot = Home+Power button
