The fire safety plicy, prcedures and risk assessments at Miltn Keynes Preparatry Schl are designed t help ur cmmunity t respnd calmly and effectively in the event that fire breaks ut in ne f ur buildings. THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PROPRIETOR AND/OR GOVERNING BODY The Prprietr and/r Gverning bdy shall ensure: a fire risk (preventin) plicy is prduced and apprved, which includes the eliminatin r reductin f risks frm dangerus substances; suitable fire prcedures are cnfirmed and prvide staff training (repeated peridically where apprpriate); the safety f anyne else legally n the schl premises; fire drills are carried ut peridically and cntact emergency services when necessary; ne r mre cmpetent persns are fully trained t assist in taking preventive and prtective measures (including fire fighting and evacuatin) Fire Safety Warden. a suitable system is in place fr the maintenance f: clear emergency rutes and exits (with drs pening in the directin f escape), signs, ntices, emergency lighting where required, fire detectrs, alarms and extinguishers (the maintenance will be carried ut by a cmpetent persn, fr example: ISO9001 certified r BAFE apprved); all staff and any thers wrking n the schl site are given fire safety infrmatin. ROLE OF THE SCHOOL FIRE SAFETY WARDEN The Schl Fire Safety Warden, wh is respnsible fr ensuring that: The fire safety plicy is kept under regular review by Gvernrs and the Senir Management Team. The fire safety plicy is prmulgated t the entire schl cmmunity. Everyne in the schl (including visitrs and cntractrs) are given clear written instructins n where they shuld g in the event f fire. Recrds are kept f the fire inductin training given t new staff and pupils. Prcedures fr emergency evacuatin are regularly tested and lessns absrbed. Fire risk assessments are regularly reviewed and updated. Fire preventin measures are meticulusly fllwed. Fire prcedures and risk assessments are reviewed n each ccasin that a building is altered, extended r rebuilt, r when new buildings are acquired. certificates fr the installatin and maintenance f fire-fighting systems and equipment are btained and kept up t date. If yu discver a fire, break the glass in the nearest alarm pint t set ff the alarm. Leave the building by the nearest exit. 2. If yu are respnsible fr a class, make them leave quietly with yu. N ne shuld talk r run. Make yur way t the assembly pint designated n the ntice in the rm. 3. If yu are teaching a class, take yur register with yu. D nt take anything else, and d nt allw the pupils t take anything. Shut drs and windws behind yu. 4. The Schl Office will summn the Emergency Services if the alarm sunds. 5. If yu have a disabled pupil in yur class, yu shuld direct him r her, tgether with his r her carer, t wait fr the Fire and Emergency Service in the nearest designated safe refuge. 6. Take the register f yur class as sn as yu reach the assembly pint. 7. Reprt anyne wh is waiting t be evacuated frm a designated refuge, r wh is missing immediately t the Schl Fire Safety Manager r the Head wh will infrm the Fire Brigade. On n accunt shuld anyne return t any building until given permissin by the Fire and Emergency Services.. 8. Remain at the assembly pint with yur pupils until the all clear is given. Page 2 f 7
PART 2: FIRE SAFETY PROCEDURES BRIEFING NEW STAFF AND PUPILS All ur new staff (teaching and nn-teaching alike) and all new pupils are given a briefing n the schl s emergency evacuatin prcedures n their first day at Miltn Keynes Preparatry Schl. We shw them where the emergency exits and escape rutes are lcated, and walk with them t the utside assembly pint. Fire actin ntices are displayed n the walls f all rms and in all crridrs, and we make certain that everyne knws what they lk like, and where they shuld g n hearing the fire alarm. All new staff are shwn hw t activate the fire alarms if they see r smell a fire. The safe evacuatin f everyne - staff and pupils alike, is ur pririty. Prtecting prperty cmes secnd. N ne shuld attempt t fight a fire at the expense f their wn, r anyne else s safety. We ffer fire awareness INSET training, including the basic use f fire extinguishers. We als ffer regular refresher training. N ne shuld attempt t use a fire extinguisher befre he r she has been trained in its use. SUMMONING THE FIRE BRIGADE The Fire Alarm System is mnitred by Redare wh will alert the fire service if an alarm is activated. The Schl Office is manned between 7:30am and 6:00pm during weekdays thrughut the year apart frm the schl clsedwns. The master panel that shws the lcatin f all the alarm call pints n the netwrked alarm system in the schl buildings is physically lcated in the schl fyer. The Schl Office is always given advance warning f fire practices. If the alarm ges ff fr any ther reasn, the staff have standing instructins t summn the Fire and Emergency Service at nce. The Security Cmpany is n call 24 hurs a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year, including public hlidays. They will attend ut f hurs t an emergency call and will call Duty Management t make them aware f the situatin. VISTIORS AND CONTRACTORS All visitrs and cntractrs are required t sign in at Receptin, where they are issued with a visitr s badge, which shuld be wrn at all times that they are n schl prperty. They are made aware f the emergency evacuatin ntice (see abve) and are shwn the way t the assembly pint. When large numbers f visitrs are at the schl fr pen days, plays, cncerts, exhibitins etc a brief annuncement is made advising them f the lcatin f the emergency exits that they shuld use in the event f the alarms sunding. Fire Safety, Prcedures and Risk Assessment DISABLED STAFF, PUPILS OR VISITORS We will ensure we have a special ne t ne inductin n fire safety fr disabled pupils and their carers and fr disabled members f staff. We have designated safe refuge pints n the first flr f the building, with signs advising f their lcatin, (usually in a stair well). When the fire alarm is sunded, it is the respnsibility f the carer f a disabled persn t take him r her t the refuge pint and t wait fr rescue by the Fire and Emergency Service. The teacher will ensure that the name f the disabled persn and his r her carer, tgether with the lcatin f their safe refuge pint, are passed t the Schl Fire Safety Manager f Head as sn as he r she reaches the assembly pint. It is the respnsibility f the Schl Fire Safety Manager r Head t ensure that this infrmatin is passed as sn as pssible t the Fire and Emergency Service. RESPONSIBILITIES OF TEACHING STAFF Teaching staff are respnsible fr escrting their pupils safely ut f the building in silence and in an rderly fashin. They are respnsible fr cnducting a head cunt n arrival at the assembly pint, and fr ensuring that the name f anyne wh cannt be accunted fr (and, if pssible, their likely lcatin) is passed immediately t the Schl Fire Safety Manager r Head. It is the respnsibility f the Schl Fire Safety Manager r Head t ensure that this infrmatin is passed t the Fire and Emergency service as sn as they arrive. On n accunt shuld anyne return t a burning building. FIRE SAFETY WARDEN We have at least ne trained Fire Warden in every building. Fire Wardens are generally members f the nn-teaching staff, such as Technicians, Matrns, Maintenance, Security and Administrative staff wh d nt have specific duties in the event f fire r ther emergency fr lking after pupils, althugh members f the teaching staff may als pt t be trained as Fire Wardens. All Fire Wardens are cmpetent persns wh have been trained t prvide safety assistance in the event f a fire. Fire Wardens receive regular refresher training. FIRE PRACTICES We hld ne fire practice every half term at Miltn Keynes Preparatry Schl. This cmbined with a prgramme f inducting new staff and pupils with emergency escape prcedures and the presence f trained Fire Wardens in every building helps t ensure that the schl can be safely evacuated in the event f a fire. FIRE PREVENTION MEASURES We have the fllwing fire preventin measures in place at Miltn Keynes Preparatry Schl: Page 4 f 7
Fire Safety, Prcedures and Risk Assessment Escape Rutes and Emergency Exits There are at least tw escape rutes frm every part f all buildings Fire ntices and evacuatin signs are displayed in every rm, crridr and stairwell. Fires extinguishers (f the apprpriate type), smke/heat detectrs are lcated in every building in accrdance with the recmmendatins f ur prfessinal advisrs. They can be manually activated by breaking a glass panel, and are autmatically activated when smke/heat builds up. All stairs, passages and emergency exits are illuminated by emergency lighting Autmatic dr clsures that are activated by the fire alarms are fitted n drs in r leading nt escape rutes. The master panel fr the alarm system is lcated in the schl ffice and shws the lcatin f a fire. [It is fitted with an uninterrupted pwer supply (UPS)] Alarms sund in all parts f the building. Keeping fire rutes and exits clear at all times. The Duty Manager is respnsible fr unlcking the buildings in the mrning, checks that escape rutes are nt bstructed and that the emergency lights wrk, and reprts defects. Testing all fire alarms weekly and recrding all tests and defects. This is the respnsibility f the Maintenance Engineer, wh als arranges fr an ISO9001 certified/bafe apprved cntractr t carry ut:. Mnthly checks f fire drs, autmatic dr clsures and emergency lights, Six mnthly prfessinal check n fire detectin and warning equipment, Six mnthly service f alarms, smke detectrs, emergency lights Annual service f fire extinguishers, Recrds f all tests are kept in the Head s Office. Electrical Safety The Schl has current electrical test certificates fr all its buildings. It uses NICEIC qualified Electrical Engineers t inspect and maintain its electrical installatins [all f which are RCB prtected and meet the requirements f BS7671 IEE wiring regulatins]. Regular prtable appliance testing takes place. A qualified electrician undertakes this testing and cmplies. Recrds f all tests are kept in the Estate Manager s Office. Departmental staff check that all Scientific and DT equipment is switched ff at the end f the schl day. All cmputers, prjectrs, printers and electrnic whitebards have been set t switch ff autmatically every evening and during hlidays and weekends. Lightning Prtectin All lightning prtectin and earthing cnfrms t BS 6651-1999. It is tested by a specialist cntractr. Recrds f all tests are kept in the Estates Manager s Office. Gas Safety All gas appliances, bilers, kitchen equipment etc., are regularly maintained and serviced by Gas Safe Registered Engineers. Recrds f all tests are kept by the Maintenance Department. All kitchen equipment is switched ff at the end f service. All labratries are checked daily t ensure that the central gas supply is turned ff. Page 5 f 7

Rubbish and Cmbustible Materials Flammable rubbish is stred away frm buildings in the secured rubbish cmpund. Fire Safety, Prcedures and Risk Assessment Miltn Keynes Preparatry Schl PART 3: FIRE RISK ASSESSMENT The Schl s Fire Risk Assessment meets the requirements f the Regulatry Refrm (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (the FSO). Specifically it identifies: The Hazard The peple at risk The measures t evaluate, remve, reduce and prtect frm the risk The measures needed t recrd, plan, infrm, instruct and train peple in risk reductin r remval The arrangements fr reviewing the assessment All risk assessments fllw a standard grid prcedure fr evaluating risk. Generic risk assessments are used fr classrms; but individual nes are needed fr crridrs, stairs, kitchens, labratries, wrkshps etc. At Miltn Keynes Preparatry Schl, we use simple line diagrams t supplement the grids. The Fire Safety Warden cnducts the fire risk assessment and has cnducted risk assessments f all the rms, labratries, crridrs, stairs, sprts buildings, etc., f Miltn Keynes Preparatry Schl]. They update the dcument every 3 years, mre frequently if significant changes are made t the interir f buildings, r new buildings are bught r added. Cpies f Miltn Keynes Preparatry Schl s fire risk assessments are lcated in the Head s Office. Any cmments r suggestins fr imprvement are always welcme.
