The Pediatric Program at Marianjoy Celebrating Milestones, One Step at a Time All parents share the same hope for their children that they will play, grow and learn new skills. At Marianjoy, we couldn t agree more. Individualized therapy programs, combined with Marianjoy s positive and encouraging environment, help children flourish and reach their highest potential. Our pediatric therapists are a highly skilled, experienced group of clinicians who have expertise in a variety of specialty areas, as well as all levels of care inpatient, outpatient and day rehabilitation. In addition, many of our therapists are Early Intervention certified. The pediatric team is led by award-winning, board-certified pediatric physiatrist, Dr. Mary Keen. In her role as the team s coordinator, Dr. Keen oversees the treatment plans of our youngest patients. Our therapists, nurses, and clinicians have immediate access to Dr. Keen s expertise when questions or concerns arise, and attend weekly team meetings to share the progress and goals of each patient. Many top pediatric physicians and specialists refer their patients to the Marianjoy Pediatric Program and with good reason. In addition to our outstanding staff and a variety of levels of care, we also offer other highly specialized services. For example, our world-renowned voice and swallowing center boasts state-of-the-art equipment, and we have a team of pediatric therapists who specialize in performing videoflouroscopic and swallowing procedures with children. Additional services include a splinting and casting clinic, spasticity management, constraint-induced therapies, and a warm water therapeutic pool to help patients with strengthening, coordination, and motor skills. Dr. Mary Keen Board Certified Physiatrist in physical medicine and rehabilitation, pediatric medicine, pediatric rehabilitation, and neurodevelopmental pediatrics.

Care for Your Child s Changing Needs Many children begin their journey with Marianjoy at a very young age. Our therapists provide progressive rehabilitation as the needs of the child evolve. Marianjoy offers classes on a variety of topics for children with developmental concerns. These classes are taught in a group setting to promote socialization skills and reinforce concepts the child has learned during their individualized therapy sessions. Marianjoy offers different levels of care to meet the continuing needs of our pediatric patients. Inpatient Rehabilitation Program Intensive hospital-based pediatric rehabilitation program with a minimum of three hours of therapy per day 24 hour nursing care Medical oversight provided by a Marianjoy Medical Group pediatric physicians specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation Day Rehabilitation Program Outpatient program designed for children requiring a combination of physical, occupational and/or speech-language therapies Access to psychology and case management services Medical oversight provided by a Marianjoy Medical Group physician or nurse practitioner Outpatient Rehabilitation Therapy For children who require one particular therapy or several therapies to improve function and independence Therapies available include physical and occupational therapy, speechlanguage pathology, neuropsychology and specialty clinics Oversight by a Marianjoy Medical Group pediatric physician is available The Pediatric Treatment Team Upon admission into Marianjoy s pediatric program, each child is evaluated to determine the therapy services required and to set individual goals. Your child s pediatric team may include a physical therapist, occupational therapist, and speech-language pathologist. A case manager may also be assigned to the team to help with acquiring specialized equipment, identifying resources, and ensuring a smooth transition back to school. A pediatric neuropsychologist is also available on site to perform neuropsychological assessments and diagnose conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, learning disabilities, and provide guidance regarding brain injuries and other developmental conditions. Using multi- and interdisciplinary approaches, the Marianjoy pediatric team actively engages children in their therapy sessions, promoting motivation, retention of information, and positive outcomes. For example, speech-language pathologist and occupational therapists often work together during a session to reinforce verbal skills, while teaching the child new tasks related to everyday activities. At Marianjoy we recognize that family involvement is critical to a child s progress and we welcome and integrate the family s input into the treatment plan. Family education is an important part of helping a child reach his/her goals. The Marianjoy team keeps the family informed and offers home-based exercise programs to help the child continue to improve outside of therapy sessions. I have found so much more from Marianjoy and its staff than I ever expected to find... They treat us like we re family. Everyone is personable and so very patient...thank you for being such a wonderful facility and for helping so many people. Physical Therapy Increasing Function and Mobility to Improve Quality of Life Marianjoy s pediatric physical therapy is designed to help children improve and increase functionality, mobility, balance and movement. After assessing the child s physical developmental level, our pediatric therapists create a treatment plan to improve function and independence using a variety of exercise techniques and specially designed equipment. Marianjoy therapists combine their knowledge of the musculoskeletal system and child development to design a treatment program that is motivational and highly beneficial to the child and family. THERAPy TECHNIQUES: Lite Gait Training Systems With the use of a body weight supported walking device, the therapist and child work on movement and motion in an upright position. Strengthening of Muscles, Bone and Ligaments After evaluating and identifying areas of weakness in a child s limbs, purposeful movement and exercises are used to strengthen specific muscle groups. Splinting and Casting Splinting and casting can help stretch muscles over a course of several weeks. Therapists monitor the improvement in muscle flexibility and range of motion until optimal positioning is achieved. Aquatic Therapy To improve strength and gross motor skills, some children receive aquatic therapy within our warm therapeutic pool. SPECIALIZED Positioning and Postural Control Marianjoy pediatric therapists have training in a variety of clinically effective treatments to improve a child s postural control and movement. Some examples include: Kinesiotaping This technique is used to facilitate posture and improve balance and stability, while increasing muscle strength and positioning. Theratog This therapeutic garment is worn by the child during therapy sessions to help improve posture and facilitate muscle control. Prosthetic and Orthotic Clinic An orthotist, physician and therapists work together to determine the best orthotic device for your child. Electrical Stimulation This treatment uses a low voltage input at a comfortable level of intensity, to stimulate muscle strength. Wheelchair and Mobility Center In Marianjoy s Wheelchair and Mobility Center, specialized therapists evaluate a child s specific seating, positioning, mobility or home environment needs. These therapists interface with equipment manufacturers and assist families with obtaining functional equipment. I can literally say I would not be here without the care, inspiration, and faith that these incredible individuals at Marianjoy have lent to me. Amanda Fowler, Former Marianjoy Patient, Marianjoy Scholar

Occupational Therapy Improving Function and Ability in a Child s Everyday Life Speech-Language Pathology: Advancing Communication and Comprehension Skills Marianjoy pediatric occupational therapists measure each child s abilities and developmental level. Based on these findings, techniques are implemented that help the child participate in age-appropriate activities of daily living. Tasks that a child finds challenging such as feeding, dressing, and hygiene are identified, and alternative behaviors are introduced to help a child achieve greater independence. common diagnoses Infant Developmental Milestones Marianjoy occupational therapists help children acquire new skills and improve those already developed. Therapy may focus on motor and visual skills, sitting, walking, and grasping. Abnormal Muscle Tone For children who experience high muscle tone due to a brain injury or muscle disability splinting and casting procedures are used to work and stretch the affected muscles. For children who experience low muscle tone, weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercises are used to increase overall motor skills. Sensory Integration Therapists improve sensory regulation awareness by assessing the child s response to two types of sensory input vestibular (balance), and proprioceptive (nerve and muscle feedback that allows a child to spatially recognize body movement and position). This therapy has been shown to increase body awareness, attention span, and concentration. In addition, children learn to improve their ability to process and respond appropriately to sensory information by using auditory, visual, tactile, and oral input. Vision and Visual Rehab Marianjoy therapists work with a neuro-optometrist to help the child with vision, perception, and ocular motor control difficulties. This therapy improves handwriting, copying skills, and other visual activities. Pediatric speech-language pathologists work with children to evaluate and treat speech, language, comprehension, and voice and swallowing disorders. Speech-language therapy emphasizes a pragmatic approach, encouraging children to use their communication and comprehension skills at a functional level. Language skills including expressive, receptive, and social communication are also addressed. Other therapeutic techniques include assistive technology and alternative communication systems such as the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). common diagnoses Articulation Disorders Therapy focused on the articulation and clarity of speech sounds uses one-on-one therapy activities, and incorporates play to increase a child s participation. Feeding, Swallowing and Sensory Difficulties Several of Marianjoy s pediatric speech-language pathologists are certified in performing and evaluating the results of videoflouroscopic procedures for children with feeding and swallowing difficulties. Treatment plans for children with these and other difficulties may include Sequential Oral Sensory (SOS) therapy. Designed to help children who experience a fear of eating due to sensory issues, this therapy teaches children that eating food can be an enjoyable experience. Language Disorders To help a child with language use, word formation, and coherency, repetitive exercises are used with familiar, unfamiliar, or difficult words and syllables. Oral-Motor Disorder Repetitive oral exercises are used to increase the coordination, strength and range of motion in the muscles of the face, lips, and tongue. For more information on Marianjoy s pediatric therapy services, please call 630-9-8542. Autism Spectrum Disorder Using the child s preferred form of communication, pediatric therapists introduce alternative techniques to improve communication skills. These include PECS, sign language, picture systems, augmentative devices, and switches, which are programmed to help children communicate single messages.

Neuropsychology Does my child need a neuropsychological assessment? Children who are having difficulty in school with reading or math, experiencing attention problems, or are exhibiting inappropriate behavior, can often benefit from a neuropsychological assessment. Neuropsychological testing is useful for children who have experienced a traumatic brain injury or have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and require a treatment plan. Testing is also beneficial when there is evidence of developmental delay, poor social skills, or behavioral problems exhibited at home or at school. The Assessment While school psychologists perform assessments to determine whether a student qualifies for special education or therapies to enhance school performance, a pediatric neuropsychologist administers a specialized evaluation that is necessary to diagnose a learning or behavioral disorder. A pediatric neuropsychological assessment typically includes an extensive battery of tests, and consultations with teachers, school personnel, parents/caregivers and private therapists. When emotional or behavioral issues are of concern, the assessment may also include classroom observation. The results of the tests help identify a child s strengths and weaknesses as compared to the test scores of children in a similar age group. A pediatric neuropsychological evaluation can be used to assess the following: Intellectual ability Achievement skills, including reading and mathematics Organization, planning, flexibility, and inhibition Attention span Language Learning and memory skills Benefits of a Neuropsychological Assessment Neuropsychological testing can accurately diagnose a child s underlying difficulties while identifying a program of intervention to improve function in school, as well as improve family and community relationships. Using the results of the assessment, a pediatric neuropsychologist can recommend clinical treatments such as speech, occupational or physical therapies. In addition, a neuropsychologist can provide recommendations to the child s physician regarding management of a child s neurological, neurobehavioral and neurocognitive difficulties. Neuropsychological assessments provide a more accurate diagnosis and can lead to better management of learning difficulties. For more information on Marianjoy s neuropsychology services or testing, please call 630-9-8602. Prescriptions for neuropsychological testing and services may be faxed to 630-9-7151.
