Protect your critical Linux on System z data with optimized efficiency Linux on System z combines the best of both worlds the flexibility and reduced costs of Linux with the outstanding reliability, scalability and performance that the mainframe delivers. Most companies have a clear data protection and disaster recovery plan for z/os but what about Linux on System z? Many are still relying on freeware backup solutions, others on volume-level backups, but some organizations are taking a significant risk by not protecting their Linux on System z data at all. UPSTREAM for Linux on System z is a simple, easy-to-use solution designed to protect your critical Linux on System z data. It helps lower costs by using your existing z/os system and resource, making it a very efficient Linux on System z storage management tool. Whether you are running Linux guests directly on an LPAR or on a z/vm virtual machine, UPSTREAM will help to protect your critical Linux on System z application and system data. UPSTREAM is designed to protect a wide range of databases and applications that organizations are migrating to Linux on System z including Oracle, IBM DB2 Universal Server, IBM Websphere, IBM Lotus Domino. Key Features Leverage existing z/os disaster recovery infrastructure. z/os tape management, security and scheduling systems allow multiple simultaneous backup and restore operations and provide maximized efficiency and data protection for your Linux on System z backups. This solution enables you to: Automate and integrate backup operations with CA Technologies management products such as CA Workload Automation CA 7 Edition and CA OPS/MVS Event Management and Automation. Use existing z/os tape drives and tape management system such as CA 1 Tape Management to control retention and manage backup tapes. Control access to the backup and recovery operations through your enterprise security management solution such as CA ACF2 or CA Top Secret. 2
Advanced data reduction tools. UPSTREAM uses innovative de-duplication technology to minimize data transmission and reduce backup time to help you meet your backup window. FIGURE A. Full-merge synthetic technology minimizes data transmission. + + Initial backups are of the full system. Incremental backups then take place as defined by user requirements (for example daily). UPSTREAM copies only the files that have changed since the previous backup. Then at another interval defined by the user (for example weekly), the incremental backups are merged to create a new, full-system backup. + + This full-merge synthetic technology, with incremental backup processing and logical file granularity, is designed to reduce overhead and speed both backup and recovery processes. Additional data reduction features include: Five levels of data compression Duplicate file recognition Block level segmented backup support Migration or disk grooming of inactive data High speed backup and recovery. UPSTREAM for Linux on System z supports HiperSocket technology for high-speed data backup and recovery. In addition it supports backups over Ethernet, token ring and ESCON connections with minimal intrusion on the network. 3
Quick and easy installation. UPSTREAM for Linux on System z is easy to install, taking minutes rather than days. Just a few simple steps are required to get you up and running: 1. Install and configure the separate UPSTREAM components for Linux on System z and on your z/os host server. 2. Assign the DNS name or TCP/IP address and port number to communicate between the two UPSTREAM software components. 3. Configure UPSTREAM for Linux and z/os. 4. Run a communication test to validate the TCP/IP connection. 5. Run your first backup! Product components Director Management Interface UPSTREAM provides a variety of user interfaces, including TSO ISPF, character mode, command line, the End User Restore GUI and the Director. The Director is a platform independent Java application that provides a user-friendly graphical management and administrative interface that can be run from a workstation anywhere in your network, virtually anywhere in the enterprise. The Director also can be run from a web browser making it easily enabled for cross platform operations. The Director executes automatically and is operational in minutes. Using the UPSTREAM Director you can initiate backups and restores, check the status of running operations, retrieve log files, perform profile configuration, run pre- and post-processing jobs and more. The comprehensive reporting features help keep your storage administrator staff efficient, aware and advised. The Director has the ability to communicate, control, and monitor the Linux on System z applications or databases it is backing up and also the UPSTREAM mainframe backup server providing centralized single view and control. The Director interface provides administrators with the tools to easily manage multiple Linux on System z servers or instances. It provides robust industrial strength functionality that allows multiple simultaneous operations. For example, while monitoring the progress of several Linux on System z backups, you can change views to initiate a Linux on System z restore, and then switch to see the status of your z/os Unix backup. 4
FIGURE B. + + Director Management Interface + + Online non-disruptive database agents UPSTREAM database agents provide online high performance backup capabilities, giving you maximum protection for your data without having to bring the database down in order to do your backups. The UPSTREAM agents provide non-disruptive hot backup capabilities to manage large amounts of data within your scheduled backup window. UPSTREAM also can be used to backup and restore a database application. UPSTREAM Oracle Agent. UPSTREAM for Linux on System z is fully integrated into Oracle s Recovery Manager (RMAN), a full-featured backup facility that can be used to perform online and offline, full, incremental and tablespace backups. UPSTREAM achieves high-performance and enhanced scalability through: Multi-channel parallel processing, which provides maximum throughput Network-free HiperSocket support RMAN speed features such as online incremental support RMAN block level incrementals 5
UPSTREAM UDB Agent. UPSTREAM for Linux on System z fully integrates with IBM s DB2 Universal Server, another full-featured facility that includes online and offline backup of complete databases or individual tablespaces. UPSTREAM can operate as a user exit that allows on-demand or system-generated transaction log backups. These act as incrementals and result in reduced data transmission. Features include: Policy-based operations Online and offline support that provides full and incremental backup Tablespace level backups and restores Interacts with DB2 scripts for seamless operation and reduced training costs User exit for system-generated incremental backups if running in archive log mode User exit support for roll-forwards of transaction logs Support for full and incremental backups as a vendor shared library Support for DB2 for z/os load utility to create or add data to a database Automatic notification of user exit failure Archive and auto recall of transaction log UPSTREAM Lotus Notes Domino Agent. UPSTREAM for Linux on System z provides a robust, integrated solution for the protection of critical Notes and Domino information, enabling online backups of Lotus Domino for Linux on System z without disrupting user productivity. This means that UPSTREAM can perform online full backups of databases (even if in use), as well as incremental backups by backing up Notes transaction logs, which is essential if you are using transaction logging. UPSTREAM provides a comprehensive solution for file systems as well as databases. UPSTREAM file system support can be used to recover the Notes application and a Notes database in the event of a disaster, as well as a point-in-time recovery. UPSTREAM also allows the database to be restored to an alternate location. It can perform incremental backups of databases where Notes reports that a new backup is needed. If a DBIID change is detected, the database is backed up to assure recovery from transaction logs. Extensive UPSTREAM support includes databases, transaction logs, and templates. It also automatically backs up important non-database data, such as Notes ID files and notes.ini files. The UPSTREAM agent does this via the efficient easy-to-use plug-in method. 6
