Villiers High School ICT Department Job Description Position Title: Responsible To: Salary: IT Manager Head of ICT (Curriculum) TBC General Function The IT Manager is responsible for ensuring the school computer network and all its systems perform efficiently and effectively, meeting the needs of the school and its users. They are also responsible for managing the team of engineers & technicians. Principle Accountabilities 1 Systems Management 1.1 Manage all of the school s computer and network systems, delegating management to the relevant engineer(s) when appropriate and agreed beforehand with the Line manager. Watchguard Firewalls Microsoft Forefront Application Controls Web Filter Cyber Bullying Monitoring System Monitor the physical health of all the schools backend systems, including servers, networking equipment, and wiring. 1.3 Manage the remote access systems in place, which include: Microsoft ISA Server 2006 Forms-based authentication Watchguard SSL-VPN Microsoft Office 365 Single-Sign-on 1.4 Manage the email systems based on Microsoft Office 365 using single sign-on 1.5 Manage the multiple database servers running Microsoft SQL Server 2008 / R2. 1.6 Manage the school intranet site based on Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Microsoft Office 365. 1.7 Manage the virtual server infrastructure based on VMware SXi vsphere v5 nterprise. 1.8 Manage the school s wireless network based on Aruba Wireless Controller and access points. 1.9 Manage the wired network infrastructure, including switches, routers, CAT5/5 cabling, fibre backbone, network routing, DHCP, & DNS. 1.10 Manage the Storage Area Network based on Dell qualogic SAN technology. 1.11 Manage the backup and disaster recovery systems and ensure all key systems have a full backup plan. 1.12 Manage the school s Internet connection (London Grid for Learning Option 2). 1.13 nsure the school s licensing agreements are current and that the school complies with all agreements and legislation. 1.14 Oversee AntiVirus software purchase and roll out and ensure antivirus software is fully updated and working on all desktop and laptop computers. 1.15 Oversee the schools Management Information System (SIMS.Net, FMS, & SIMS Discover) 1.16 Oversee the Apple Mac environment and Xserve Server 1.17 Oversee the documentation of all the school s systems and ensure that they are kept up-to-date 2 IT Service Desk 2.1 nsure the IT Service Desk is offering a quality support service to all end users through efficient and effective practices based on ITIL methodology 2.2 Set, manage, & monitor the SLA s for the IT Service Desk. 2.3 Lead and manage the team of support engineers. 2.4 nsure the asset database is accurate & current. 2.5 nsure the KB (Knowledge Base) repository is properly managed and kept current. 2.6 Identify the need for technical training within the school staff and recommend suitable training. 2.7 Identify, diagnose, and solve technical problems while ensuring a minimal disruption to programme and systems. 2.8 Keep an accurate and up-to-date record of all current and past support issues through the support desk system/software, periodically analyse these records, and provide regular reports to the Line Manager on trends and potential problems. 2.9 Perform standard IT Support duties including, but not limited to, installing, configuring, maintaining and repairing software, printers, projectors, AV & video editing equipment, peripherals, computers, and network components. 3 Strategic System Development and Project Management Page 2 of 6

4.1 Plan and manage the strategic development of the school s computer systems over the next one, three, and five years. 4.2 Keep up to date with the latest technologies and trends, developing the school s systems as needed and ensuring effective systems management. 4.3 Research new technologies that can be used to promote effective teaching and learning. 4.4 Recommend areas of the school s systems that could benefit from updated technologies. 4.5 Manage selected projects, as agreed with the Headteacher, using industry standard project management methodologies (PRINC2/ITIL). These projects may or may not be directly related to the IT provision of the school. This may include taking the lead role in managing the project and further responsibilities including but not limited to research, evaluation, recommendation, and/or implementation. 4 Budgeting & Procurement 5.1 Manage the multiple IT related budgets of the school, which include computer hardware, software/licensing, support contracts, and services. 5.2 Meet, advise, and coordinate with department and faculty heads regarding their current and future technology needs and preparing such budgets. 5.3 Manage the strategic procurement of all technology related items for the school, ensuring compliance with internal and external processes. 5.4 Research, devise, plan, and create a strategy for IT investment for the school in accordance with the greater plans and vision of the school and in collaboration with the Headteacher or appropriate member of the Senior Leadership Team. 5 Communication & Liaison 6.1 Foster regular communication with colleagues in the wider ICT team in order to facilitate the smooth running of the computer network and services. 6.2 Foster regular communication with staff members and students in order to facilitate the smooth running of the support provision and to promote new ICT systems and projects. 6.3 Manage all links and accounts with external equipment and service providers. 6 Professional Development 7.1 Show a commitment to personal and professional development by meeting targets agreed with the Head of ICT. 7.2 Ability and willingness to adapt one s practice when & where benefits and improvements are identified. 7.3 Show consistent competence and reliability on a day-to-day basis, demonstrating a sound understanding of the issues faced and the technologies used throughout the school. nvironment Unsocial Hours There may be a requirement to work beyond normal hours should emergency work on ICT systems be needed. Additional duties may include support for ICT at special events, such as Parent s venings, conferences, and school productions and undertake any other ICT related duties as required. Risk The IT Manager will be working in a high school environment and will have contact with staff and students alike. There is a physical element to the post in relation to setting up IT equipment in multiple rooms and floors. Page 3 of 6
