Today, careers in manufacturing require creativity, precision, logistics and problem-solving. North Central and its industry partners have developed the courses you need in CAD (Computer Aided Design), CNC (Computer Numerical Controls) programming and CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) software. With these skills as your foundation, you can learn to make anything and go anywhere. Your training in digital fabrication will take you beyond the classroom and into the college s state-of-the art Mobile Digital Fabrication Lab the Fab Lab. The only one of its kind in Northern Michigan, the Fab Lab provides innovative training for high school and college students and supports workforce development in our region. At North Central, you will learn by doing, and you will learn from professionals who can introduce you to today s high-tech manufacturing employers. A trained workforce is essential for manufacturing growth in Northern Michigan. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts job growth of 7 percent for computer-controlled machine tool operations. CNC operators and CNC programmers with skills and experience working on a variety of CNC machines will have an edge in a competitive job market. The 44-foot trailer contains 12 state-of-the-art computers loaded with design programs Surf Cam and AutoCad, a Haas OL-1 CNC lathe turning center and a Haas OM-1A Milling Center. Truck Driving (TRK 100) North Central Michigan College is proud to offer the Truck Driver of Development program in cooperation with International Trucking School, Inc. This 15-week driver training program begins with classroom, lab and focused independent study time and ends with a 10-week paid internship of on-the-road experience. According to recent estimates, three out of every four tons of freight in the United States are moved by truck, and demand for drivers is expected to remain consistently high. This certificate of development program introduces students to the theoretical as well as practical skills necessary to obtain a commercial driving license, grade A, and includes a strong emphasis on safe driving practices in all phases of instruction. Each module of instruction (four total) must be completed with a C or better. Upon successful completion of the first three modules, students will be placed with an approved carrier for approximately 10 weeks where students work full-time driving 40 hours per week. Admission Requirements: Regular admission to North Central; Must be at least 21 years of age; Must have a high school diploma or GED; Must hold a valid driver s license; Must have a driving record that will enable the applicant to obtain a Training Instruction Permit (TIP) from the Secretary of State; Must complete and pass the Department of Transportation physical examination and drug screening; According to Michigan Wage Information and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Michigan salary range is $36,000 to $50,000 Must meet the requirements of the Motor Carrier Federal Safety Regulations, Qualifications of Drivers. Associate of Science Applied Plant Science This is a cooperative, specialty degree between North Central Michigan College and the Institute of Agricultural Technology of Michigan State University. General education coursework is completed through North Central with technical skills coursework completed through MSU. Technical skill options are: 1) Landscape and Nursery or 2) Applied Plant Science with concentrations in Commercial Horticulture Operations or in Commercial Turfgrass Operations. Human Services/Social Sciences Health Sciences/Allied Health Criminal justice is the system of practices and institutions of governments directed at upholding social control, deterring and mitigating crime, or sanctioning those who violate laws with criminal penalties and rehabilitation efforts. Careers in the health care industry are rewarding, both personally and professionally. Unlike some other industries, improvements in technology and declines in the economy do not have much of an effect on demand for health care professionals. Many people look to these types of careers for longterm job stability. The intrinsic rewards that come from caring for and helping people in need are valued by people in all levels of health care. North Central Michigan College provides programs that prepare students for employment opportunities in law enforcement, the courts or corrections. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, health care is one of the largest industries in the country, with more than 11 million jobs. Out of the 10 fastest growing careers, health jobs account for seven. Most jobs in criminal justice, law enforcement and corrections require a four-year degree, so individuals interested in pursuing these careers should plan to eventually complete a bachelor s degree.
