Providing Reliable Water West Basin Municipal Water District West Basin provides imported water and recycled water to 17 coastal LA cities, about 1 million people. We are a water wholesaler and State agency

We Are In a Drought! While other parts of the State are imposing water restrictions and rationing, we are not. Due to prior investments in storage, recycling, conservation by Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and West Basin MWD However, we need to conserve and be efficient at this time to protect our stored water

What We Will Talk About Today Entering a new Water World of Scarcity Southern California will be challenged West Basin will meet the challenge with great benefits We need your support!

What You May Not Know About We live in water Disneyland & most of our water is imported from hundreds of miles away! Two major imported water sources hurting! Heart State system is broken 3 studies point to drier Colorado River system Interior Secretary Salazar calls CA system a ticking time bomb Our Your Water

Big Picture: Water is Becoming A Challenge Everywhere Global water crisis Eastern U.S. in trouble Additional Problems: Population growth Climate change Eventual loss summer water supply New big customer: the environment CA, is out growing its traditional water system We are currently in a dry period, snow pack of 17% last year

What Is West Basin Doing To Solve These Problems & Protect You? Water Reliability 2020 Program taking control of our water locally & providing reliable supplies: 1. Doubling Water Recycling 2. Doubling Conservation 3. Looking at adding 10% of our future water from Ocean Water Desalination Most Socal water agencies doing something similar

Doubling Water Recycling Experts at recycling Make 5 types of water out of sewer water Three waters so pure, have add minerals back to move them 30 to 60 million gallons a day Environmentally beneficial to ocean and sustainable

Doubling Water Conservation ROI 500% due partners & grants Give out free toilets & irrigation controllers Help businesses Ocean Friendly Garden classes how to use less water & have less ocean runoff Programs for organization and everyone

Ocean Water Desalination Found a way to protect 100% of Ocean s adult and juvenile fish & most if not all mature larvae, the future of the ocean Also reducing energy needs, save 42% Cost now comparable to recycling Most citizens want desal at 70% to 80% level

Many Benefits of Water Reliability 2020 Drought-proof, reliable supplies Emergency supply Better water quality Mitigates higher prices during future water shortages Reduced energy use over importing water Water for jobs & economy Helps Met meet future demands Lessens demand on N. California environment Cost goal same as future imported water

What Will Be Your Water Legacy? If you are concerned about your water legacy There are 3 or 4 simple things you can do: 1. Help us find other folks to talk to, 2. Volunteer to testify at a future regulatory meeting in support of reliable water, 3. Get on our email list to be kept up to date, 4. Or, simply sign a support card to help us get state and federal grants.
