Southern Peaks Regional Treatment Center is a Joint Commission accredited residential treatment center offering an array of specialized behavioral health programs for both male and female adolescents, ages 10 to 21, who are experiencing emotional, behavioral, psychological, educational, or social problems. Located in the foothills of southern Colorado, Southern Peaks provides a highly structured and intensive therapeutic environment coupled with the flexibility to address the distinct treatment needs of each youth and his or her family system through our comprehensive clinical assessments, individualized treatment planning, and diverse programs and services. SEXUAL MISCONDUCT TREATMENT PROGRAMS The Insight Program for boys and the RENEW Program for girls offer gender-responsive treatment services for adolescents with histories of sexually abusive behaviors, often accompanied by trauma-related diagnoses or additional behavioral health problems. From the outset of the treatment process, each program utilizes a psychosexual evaluation and other specialized clinical assessments to assist in determining a truly individualized treatment plan for each youth. BEHAVIORAL HEALTH TREATMENT PROGRAMS Southern Peaks specializes in gender-responsive residential treatment services for adolescents with significant behavioral health disorders. Our separate boys and girls programs are highly structured, therapeutic, and predictable, providing a safe and nurturing environment for youth who need an intensive level of care. Upon admission, our clinical, medical, and educational teams will complete a comprehensive assessment process that will lay the foundation for each child s individualized treatment plan. We use a multidisciplinary team approach to each adolescent s treatment experience. Each child s treatment plan is managed by a Masters level therapist. Assessment, treatment planning, and intervention strategies are developed, modified, and carried out through active participation of the youth, his or her family, the placing agency, and key members of each child s treatment team, including his or her therapist, a registered nurse, a treatment supervisor, and an education specialist, all under the direction of our attending board-certified psychiatrist. Key treatment interventions include, but are not limited to: individual therapy; group therapy; family therapy; social skills training; psychological/psychiatric support; and medical/psychotropic intervention. Each child will have the opportunity to further participate in gender-responsive clinical, educational, and recreational programming along with a variety of other structured activities and services designed to foster growth and positive life changes. Cognitive and dialectical behavioral therapies, as well as trauma-informed care, are used as the framework for each child s treatment plan. Key therapeutic interventions include individual, group, and family counseling, with a focus on healthy sexuality, cognitive restructuring, empathy development, values clarification, anger management, impulse control, social skills training, and relapse prevention strategies. The Insight and RENEW Programs are designed in accordance with the standards and guidelines promulgated by the Colorado Sex Offender Management Board for the treatment and supervision of juveniles with histories of sexual misconduct including, but not limited to, adjudicated sexual offenses. Our Master s level clinicians have been specifically trained with a focus on treating adolescents who have committed sexually offensive behaviors. All staff assigned to the Insight and RENEW Programs complete extensive training year-round in sex offense specific treatment principles. All residents in the Insight and RENEW Programs are housed in single rooms, and ratios of one staff to four youth during waking hours provide for intensive supervision while minimizing community risk.

THE HAVEN AT SOUTHERN PEAKS The Haven at Southern Peaks is a trauma-focused recovery program for young victims of sexual exploitation. Haven offers an exceptional blend of a safe house for victims of child sex trafficking along with the comprehensive therapeutic services of a residential treatment center for youth with behavioral health disorders. Our clinical, medical, and educational teams work collaboratively to ensure a holistic restoration experience through an array of program services to include: n Screenings and Assessments n Psychological / Psychiatric Evaluations n Medical Care, with an On-site Clinic n Case Management / Treatment Planning n Individual, Group, and Family Therapy n Substance Abuse Treatment n Survivors Groups n Skill Building n Experiential / Recreational / Therapeutic Activities n Educational Services n Transitional / Aftercare Planning Haven utilizes nationally renowned experts on the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children for consultation, collaboration, and specialized trainings for our staff. Our clinical team utilizes both Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) as the framework for each child s individualized treatment and care plan. We strive to help each child understand what trauma is while they explore functional and dysfunctional beliefs. Youth in the Haven program learn to control the effects of their trauma and to build protective factors, and in the process become aware of victim-trauma cycles including Stockholm Syndrome. With an emphasis on cognitive, experiential, and trauma-focused therapies, Haven provides a safe, nurturing environment where adolescents who have been involved in sex trafficking can experience physical, emotional, and social healing. THE MEDICINE BEAR PROGRAM The Medicine Bear Program is a service open to all Native American youth entering any one of our core treatment programs at Southern Peaks. It serves the needs of our American Indian youth, both urban and reservation based, through culturally relevant treatment services. Youth admitted in the Medicine Bear Program are integrated into our regular clinical and educational programming while they receive the specialized Medicine Bear services through teaching and learning methods that include lectures, group discussions, guest speakers, off-campus trips, experiential learning, and one-on-one dialogue. Our mission is to guide each child in his or her effort to become a strong, healthy bi-cultural Native youth who will walk in balance with all of creation. Our treatment philosophy is culturally based on the Medicine Wheel, a powerful teaching tool and a way of understanding ourselves and our place in the world. The Medicine Bear Program provides structure, close monitoring, and a supportive family like environment that is designed to assist Native youth in the development of strong cultural identity, positive attitudes, coping skills, knowledge, and behaviors necessary to recover from trauma, behavioral problems and chemical dependency.

Through our approved special education services, the Phoenix Academy is able to serve emotionally and learning disabled children and meet the mandates for each student who has an Individualized Education Plan.

TRANSGENDER YOUTH We welcome the opportunity to serve youth who self-identify as transgender. Adolescents who do not conform to prevalent gender norms may be admitted to Southern Peaks for treatment services in any one of our core programs. Each individual s living arrangements and program participation will be determined on a case by case basis and according to each youth s gender preference. Transgender youth are integrated into all aspects of daily life and therapeutic activities at Southern Peaks while benefiting from exclusive group counseling sessions and the compassionate, affirmative and holistic approach we offer to their presenting clinical needs. SANCTUARY MODEL Southern Peaks lays the framework for treatment in all of our programs and services by using the Sanctuary Model for Trauma Informed Care. Sanctuary is a blueprint for clinical and organizational change which, at its core, promotes safety and recovery from adversity through the active creation of a trauma-informed community. Sanctuary recommends changing the central question we ask about the people we serve from What s wrong with you? to What s happened to you? as the first step in recognizing the influence of the past on current behaviors and functioning. A recognition that trauma is pervasive in the experience of human beings forms the basis for the Sanctuary Model s focus not only on the people who seek services, but equally on the people and systems who provide those services. FAMILY ORIENTED TREATMENT We welcome and encourage families to be involved with their children s treatment from the day of admission at Southern Peaks. Each child s therapist will work closely with family members to seek input into the child s treatment process, facilitate regular communications on child and family issues, and to plan for continuing care or reunification upon their child s discharge from Southern Peaks. Families will have multiple opportunities to talk with their child each week, and our therapists will conduct weekly family therapy, in person and remotely, with flexible scheduling to meet the needs of the family. Family visits are encouraged and viewed as a vital part of the overall treatment process. For geographically distant families and referring agencies, Southern Peaks offers: n Admission and discharge transportation assistance n Family visitation assistance, including transportation and hotel accommodations for two family members on a quarterly basis n Video-Conferencing
